X1 Expanded functionality questions

I know there’s already a thread about this release, but it’s kind of general, touching on things like pricing and what is / isn’t in there and so on.

I thought it might be useful to have a less “opinion-based” thread for asking the cakewalk staff specific questions about how the announced features actually operate, gathered in one place.

If this is a lame idea, feel free to ignore. Anyway, I’ll start:

1/ Soundcloud integration
This is potentially very useful for me, as a way of sharing work-in-progress mixes with clients and collaborators easily. So I’m curious about the actual workflow of it. Do you still have to export the track and then publish with another tool, or is it something you can do directly from the track view? Basically, how quick and simple is it?
2/ Modular Pro Channel & V700c channel strip control section
Wondering how this will work, and if it will be fully functional from day one, or need an update to the console or anything.
The current implementation is that pressing the console EQ button cycles through the modules in order. Will this provide implementations for new modules? Understand what’s in the custom strip and what’s not?
Cheers

Seth has stated that there are bug fixes in Expanded.  May we please have a list of these?
I don't need the ProChannel, etc. enhancements included with Expanded but if there are bug fixes for X1 then I suppose I have to shell out to buy them, although frankly I feel it's outrageous that I should have to be forced to do that.  The bug fixes should be made available for free as an X1d without the ProChannel and other 'specials'.

If the Soundcloud implementation is like Studio One's that would be just peachy.  Just pull up your mix, open the dialog and send it to your SoundCloud page...tres easy.

Hi. I know I can't tell anyone what to do or anything, but my intention here was to have this thread just for finding out about the functionality and leaving the "frankly it's outrageous" stuff in the other threads. It's the Sonar forum after all, so there will be plenty of space for people to be outraged, any time anyone feels like it.

More specifically, this question has already been answered in one of those other threads, and a free update of all the bug fixes in this release is coming later for people who don't buy X1 Expanded.

I'm surprised no one has said anything about Music XML. I seem to remember a bunch of people complaining about SONAR lacking this feature.

Yes I was thinking the same thing. And as far as a list of the bug fixes, I'm sure they are still working on bug fixes even now and prolly won't have a full list until its ready to be released.

I'm going to attempt to resurrect this, as I've not seen either of my questions answered anywhere, and the other thread now appears to be about everything imaginable under the sun other than X1 Expanded.

Anyone else got any unanswered questions*, we can maybe get a cakewalk staffer to answer?

    * not the same sarky rhetorical crap as in the other thread thanks.

In a similar vein to John T's question about the V-700 are there any plans to improve/rewrite the Mackie CS dll so that the PC can be controlled via an MCU? ATM the only controls that seem to be exposed to the MCU are the EQ controls.

It would be really nice if the compressor section was exposed to the "dynamics" mode of the MCU, failing that as a regular vst so it could be done via plugin mode.

    Cakewalk? Anyone?

Soundcloud is free to a point, more space cost more dosh.

Google it and join up, that part is free.

It's free for the basic storage. It's not a size limit as such, you get "120 minutes" for free. You get more time on the paid accounts and the ability to have higher quality versions for downland and whatnot.

I think it would be useful for easy sharing of work in progress with clients. You can have private pages and stuff like that.

What I'm wondering about with Soundcloud is, do we finally get an embedded MP3 codec in Sonar? I mean, they don't expect us to upload a 4 minute long 96kHz/24 file do they?

I dunno. Maybe it's part of their marketing strategy to make you buy the MP3 encoder.

From my own experience(s) there, I've uploaded a few mp3's for starts, but I'm finding many of my associates use it so that they 'can' upload full wav files... As a matter of fact, I just downloaded one such file from Soudcloud that I was asked to clean up for a friend/client... It was handy as it's far too large for a file attach...

Can someone explain the advantage between using SkyDrive for large audio file sharing, SoundClick for song showcasing, and Sound Cloud?  I am using all of them but for song showcasing only (no social updates to FaceBook, etc.), do you think Sound Cloud will be more useful than SoundClick without X1's soon to come upload feature?  I think I am a bit behind the times with these free apps.

The way it works is that you can upload whatever quality you like, in a variety of formats, but the on-the-page playblack is always 128 mp3. However, if you switch on the download option, then anyone downloading gets your original file.

So for high quality files, the on the page player acts as a preview option.

I sure hope they've made this without iLok... That would be very disturbing as I've avoided any such protected software for so long. I think they'd have mention "iLok required" with the ads.........?

What advantage is there in having Sonar upload my files to Soundcloud over the Soundcloud's proprietary uploader? What is the advantage of Sonar linking to Soundcloud account over normal soundcloud usage?

Dont know about how Sonar plans to implement.  But in StudioOne you can go from creating a project to mixing to mastering to burning and posting to the net all inside the program without having to ever export and all in an elegant intuitive design.

What I'm wondering about with Soundcloud is, do we finally get an embedded MP3 codec in Sonar? I mean, they don't expect us to upload a 4 minute long 96kHz/24 file do they?

Hey bub for soundcloud you should upload a 16bit 44k file because they (soundcloud) encode the track for their players, uploading an already compressed-encoded track will only result in a degraded file being avalible.

What advantage is there in having Sonar upload my files to Soundcloud over the Soundcloud's proprietary uploader? What is the advantage of Sonar linking to Soundcloud account over normal soundcloud usage?

That's what I want to know, yeah.

I can imagine a facility added onto the export function that gets your mix up there in a matter of a couple of clicks. If it's like that, I'll be very tempted to get the expansion. If it's like Cakewalk Publisher, much less so.

See my above post JT, ol pal.  That's what it's like in Studio One.  Hopefully Cake has studied this model and will repeat...or better.
