X1 Issue Disc3 of 4 Dimension Pro Installation

I currently have Sonar Producer 8.5 installed on my PC. The DAW is fully updated as is my full version of Dimension Pro 1.5. It works flawlessly in micro host mode and as a synth insert in Sonar. I have the following folders in the Cakewalk installation folder on my pc

1: Sonar 8 Producer Edition (I assume this is the installation folder Sonar 8)
2: Sonar 8.5 Producer (Sonar 8.5 folder)

I have the full box set of DVD's for Sonar X1 and am attempting to install all four Discs.

Disc 1 of 4...installs no issues. (X1)
Disc 2 of 4...installs no issues. (Beatscape)
Disc 3 0f 4...I keep getting this message and can go no further...

(The installer has detected that a previous version of Dimension Pro is currently installed. Please download the 1.5 update from www.cakewalk.com)

I follow directions and install the update. I reboot PC, start X1, make sure X1 has VST folder mapped where the update supposedly installed and try to insert Dimension Pro as a soft synth and I get the following message.

(Failed to start soft synth, the synth may not be properly installed.)

I have wasted too much time reading posts and trying to figure out what is wrong. I notice that Cakewalk is not responding to any posts in the forum on this topic. This is too bad. If I owned a business I would address the issue in some way so that my tech support team would not be inundated. But not only for that reason...what could the other reason be? Oh yeah...the customer. I have had every version of Sonar since 6 and have never had issues with an installation unless it was something I did wrong. Am I doing something wrong?

I will have to waste some more of my precious time on come Monday and speak with tech support. I am sure X1 is working flawlessly for many and it is a great upgrade. But I will go no further until all Discs are installed. Back to 8.5.

I'm having the exact same problem.  After I installed the Dim Pro update, I now have a Dim Pro 1.5 icon on my desktop.  It works fine in standalone mode, and works fine as plug-in for X1.  However, when I put the install Disc (3) for the Dim Pro update, I get the same message telling me to install the 1.5 update from the website that I've already installed.

Like you, I wasted more than two hours on this today, and like you I'll be calling tech support Monday.  This is not Cakewalk's finest moment....

I just saw your other thread.  I'm glad you replied to this one, because I think all three of are having more or less the same problem.  Maybe we can have a conference call with tech support on Monday!

    Hi guys...

An update of what I have just done.  I decided to download 1.2 update as well just in case there was any possibility of the 1.2 version being not right.  1.2 installed fine...confirmed version number etc...all good.  I then went throught he whole..."detected an earlier version...go to Cakewalk and download 1.5" message again.  Downloaded 1.5 and installed it.  The message "you must have V1.2 or later" came up in this install...but it finished fine.  Then went into the X1 dip pro download and went to install Dim Pro again...got into the same loop "detected an earlier version...go to Cakewalk and download 1.5".  No where to go now... Hate logic loops...

I live in Australia so I might have to skip the conf call...

Lets hope we get a good old baker trawling through here and might come across our thread.

    Regards
    Mick

    Guys...
Check in you Windows Control Panel what version of Dim Pro you have installed...I have installed the updater (not the X1 component) about 5 times now and myu control panel is saying I only have 1.2 installed!! Buddgered if I know why its happening but it seems that my downloaded Dim Pro1.5 Updater is not installing Dim Pro 1.5.  Then when the X1 component hits that spot it can only find 1.23 installed then kicks us off to the web page.

Have either of you definatly (according to windows control panel)... have Dim Pro 1.5 installed???

If you open Dimension Pro in microhost or as an insert in Sonar, right click on the word "Dimension Pro" and it will tell you the version installed. I have 1.5 in both instances as a microhost and in Sonar 8.5 as an insert.

    Mick,

I had serious installation issues with Dimension Pro but was told that a simple uninstall and reinstall was all that was needed. With all respect, this is not the case. Uninstall and reinstall will work if you can completely uninstall, and here is where the problem is.

Uninstallation is a program sequence also and not the highest priority for any software publisher. Priority is to get a clean install, but uninstalling software cleanly is not a profitable business drain on time and resources. There are very few programs that have engineered completely clean uninstalls.

Dimension Pro follows the generic pack of leaving garbage behind all over the place after it has been “uninstalled”.  I’m running Win XP SP3 and found scattered and conflicting registry entries for Dim Pro after an “uninstall”. New serials were conflicted with old registrations not removed.

Sorry to be vague (and negative), but if you can uninstall Dim Pro thru the control panel, do so first. If not, reinstall Dim from the 1.2 discs and uninstall from the control panel.

Then, search the registry for anything under cakewalk software, looking for anything under Dimension Pro or DP. Delete all entries. Do a registry search for any and all previous or present serial numbers or reg numbers. Delete anything you find.

Go through documents and settings application data folders and delete anything left from Dim Pro for any and all users. Delete anything in the Programs files Cakewalk directory pertaining to Dim Pro. In case you selected an alternative pathway for the Dim Pro vsti dll, go in and delete that too if the uninstall missed it.

If everything is successfully wiped out, you should be able to go forward with the X1 Dim Pro installation with the newest serial and reg, as well as the additional content installer. Do the packs 1-3 installation anyway in case anything else is missing after you get a successful install.

Basically, you have to get rid of previous installations, which is not efficiently accomplished by the defective uninstall routine. Hoping that Cake will get a fix on this.

    Good luck,

    John

    Re:X1 Issue Disc3 of 4 Dimension Pro Installation 2010/12/19 11:13:46 (permalink)
A quick confirmation of Meno's post.  Right click of Dim Pro as both a plug and in standalone mode confirms that it's 1.5.

John's post is an eloquent description of what I'd guessed was happening.  Despite the fact that Sonar can find the 1.5 update, like John, I'm also guessing that cakewalk left some garbage in the registry that's confusing the update process on the DVD.

As near as I can guess there are possibly two ways they can address this:  either provide a scrub utility that cleans the offending garbage from the registry so the existing DVD install process can continue, or rewrite the install process on the DVD so it ignores the offending info.

If Cake can't fix this, it looks like we'll all have to do without Dim Pro.  This is particularly galling for me because I've paid for Dim Pro several times over, including buying it as a standalone app before it was bundled with Sonar Producer.  To be denied access to the intonation fixes and new sounds after all this money spent is quite offensive, actually.

I'll post after talking to tech support on Monday.  Anyone else who does, please post also.  Thanks!

I ran into the same problem when I tried to install the DimPro additional content and got the error message that said I needed to download and  install the DimPro 1.5 update. I did so and then got the error message again. In another thread on this topic, it was suggested to enter the registry " HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Cakewalk music software/Dimension pro"
    as well as "HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Cakewalk music software/Dp"
and change the serial number to the new number we received with our X1 version. I did so and went back to through the install without a hitch. Then Dimension Pro worked flawlessly in X1 and as a stand alone.. but now, when I went back to version 8.5, I could not use DimPro
without entering a registration code. The registration code that shipped with X1 was "not a valid" reg. code. Not that I'm not satisfied with having a complete install in X1, but I want to hang onto and continue to use 8.5 until we get some of the bugs out of it (X1). I was prepared to follow John's advice by completely uninstalling DimPro but thought I'd try one idea before doing so. I simply re-entered the registry and changed the serial number back to the original.. IT WORKED!! Now X1 and 8.5 both are happy campers..
I'm running Win7 32 bit.. if you're running 64 bit there'll be more instances of serial number locations in your registry. end of story.

I just noticed that my stats show my machine as 64 bit.. well, that's my other machine, dedicated to daw only.. and I won't screw with it by installing anything I'm not too sure of. I may try soon, but for now, the 32 bit is my crash test dummy. Good luck!

Hello, are you aware of the DXi/VST issue with this? Without realising it I was using the DXi version in my 8.5 projects (I had loaded both the DXi and VST versions of DimPro 1.1/1.2). As 1.5 only supports VST my 8.5 projects wouldn't work with DimPro1.5. I've gone back and re-loaded 8.53 and DimPro 1.2 and it's fine.

Sorry to say my X1 disks are on the shelf and will stay there until this is all sorted out. I realise I could use DimPro 1.2 with X1 but there were other compatability issues for me with SessionDrummer3 patches so I'll hang back for a while.

    Best wishes,

As promised, my update after talking to tech support today.  The news is very good with an important caveat.

Tech guy Dave was my guide.  The caveat:  I don't have any mission-critical songs with Dim Pro, so we chose to obliterate Dim Pro from my PC.  If you need the earlier versions, you'll need to use a different strategy.

This method involved deleting a lot of folders (maybe a half dozen or more) from my registry.  After that, I was able to install Dim Pro 1.5 from the DVDs as Cakewalk intended.  For registration, he had me go into Sonar as an adminitrator, and do the registration from there, rather than using Dim Pro as a standalone.  Don't kinow if it makes a difference, just thought I'd mention it.

So far, all seems well.  Thanks Dave for a great job getting me up and running!

Thanks for the update Twang...I have many songs where I used Dimension Pro in Sonar 8.5. This will not work for me. I called Cakewalk during my lunch break yesterday (2pm) and wouldn't you know it there is no phone support between the hours of 2-3.

I am really wishing I held off on this purchase. This is not the time of year to have to deal with this kind of crap. "NOTE TO SELF...NEVER PURCHASE SONAR UPGRADES FOR AT LEAST 6 MONTHS"

    Hey Meno:

You probably know this, but there are other approaches.  In fact, he didn't start me with the idea of obliterating it.  I volunteered that I'd be happy to do a clean install, using the DVDs as intended for a new user, and then he took me from there.

It's a pain, but if you can get through, Dave knows his stuff and it's worth it!

Wow...what a simple solution to a problem that many seem to have. Here are the results of my tech call. Remember I already had Dimension Pro installed alongside Sonar 8.5 no issues.

Tech asked me to do the following.
Assuming C is your install drive and NOTE... I am using 32bit X1 and Sonar 8.5. So if you are using 64bit go to appropriate 64bit folders

    1st
    1.    Go to  C:\Cakewalk\Vstplugins\Dimension Pro
    2.    In folder should be DP folder, Dimension Pro.dll, Dimension Pro.exe
    3.    Right click on Dimension Pro.dll go to properties and check the version under "Details" tab should be 1.5.0
This is verifying that you do in fact have v1.5 DP installed.

    2nd
    1.    Open Sonar X1 go to "Preferences", "VST Settings" "VST Scan Folder" and make sure you have the path, C:\ program files (x86)\cakewalk\vstplugins.
    2.    Next make sure all three options are checked in the VST Scan Options section.
    3.       Next click on the Reset All VST plugins
    4.       Next click on the Scan VST Folders
    5.       Once done go to menu, Utilities, Cakewalk Plug-in Manager click on VST Instruments and check that Dimension Pro is there.
    6.       Open a project and insert Dimension Pro via menu Insert, Soft Synth. This should open Dimension Pro and ask you for a Serial Number.

For some reason Sonar X1 does not find Dimension Pro for some on install? If you follow this method you should be good to go.  I have no idea why I could not insert Dimension Pro prior to following these steps. When I purchased X1 (comes with Dimension Pro) I was told that I did not have to install Dimension Pro again because it was already there. But when I went to insert it as a soft synth it said it was not installed. This is why I used the install CD I received with X1.

    Good Luck
Forgot...one note...The tech told me not to install the 4th DVD (additional content) but to download them from the link he provided in an e-mail after our call. The only reason to do this is if someone wants the new content that comes with the X1 version of Dimension Pro. He said there were a few new Bass sounds and what not. He made it sound like it was not much but I will be checking it out. It will just overwrite what is already there and add the new content.

Logical.  Then there is a DPro in 8.5.3 and the new version in X1.  Am I correct?

Yes...when I purchased the DVD Upgrade to 8.5 it comes with a Dimension Pro install DVD. Same thing with X1.

Thanks for the update.  Each situation with Dim Pro is slightly different.  I had multiple versions of it on my drive, both dxi and VST.  Also, apparently something got botched in my patched upgrade to 1.5 prior to the X1 install, because my serial number wasn't showing on the Dim Pro splash screen.  That was when I volunteered to Dave that I'd be perfectly happy to wipe the slate clean and start from scratch.  It sounds like your previous installs were a lot cleaner.  In any event, we're up and running--ALL RIGHT!

I feel your pain.  I wasted probably about 6 hours getting this thing to work.  Luckily I switched all my DXI versions of Dim Pro over to VST earlier this year.  I did report this to Cakewalk, and to be fair they do acknowledge this in on their support page.

    Hi Guitartek:

My situation was the opposite of the error message you're quoting.  In my case, it told me that it found my valid Dim Pro 1.2 and that I needed to run the 1.5 update patch before I could continue installing X1.  The only problem was that I had *already run* the 1.5 patch.  This put me in a vicious cycle:  I couldn't run the patch, because it was already there.  However, the X1 installer told me it wouldn't install until I ran the patch.  That's when I called tech support!

I had an issue with serial number also.

After getting the plugin to show up in X1 I ran Dimension Pro and a window popped up that showed the current serial number (not the one I received with X1 purchase) and wanted the registration code. I had no idea what this was.

I went to My Account on Cakewalk web site and this serial number did not show up. It showed a purchase for Dimension Pro but the fields for serial number and registration code were blank. I then went to Cakewalk.com and on the top right there is a Product Registration link. At this link I provided the serial number that was showing in the popup and filled in the other info. Cakewalk then generated an e-mail to me with the registration code. I entered this into the registration field in the pop-up and it said I was fully registered.

Way too much time to get DP up and running. I wonder what else does not work. Now that I have this figured out I better read up on others threads.

I know - I went through the same thing.  during the course of all the different things I did I reached your exact same error message.  I was also redediting serial numbers and registration codes.  All of a sudden it worked and I can't tell you how it worked because it doesn't make sense.  In my registry I now have the Serial number for DimPro from X1, and the registration code for DimPro of my previous install.  I doesn't make sense but it worked.  I can't really help people because I don't know how I even fixed it.  but I did have to install the X1 dimpro download (disc) which I was trying to avoid because it was a 2.5hour download.

Meno - for me DP was the absolute worst part of the install.  Everything else was smooth (for me)

I agree with Guitartek about Dim Pro being the worst part of the installation (so far, anyway).  That's why I decided I'd try to wipe the slate clean and start from scratch.  It was the only solution I had any confidence in.

These instructions were the ticket for me. I've been struggling with getting Dim Pro x64 to show up in my X1 system for the past 2-3 weeks. Didn't even have problems with the Expansion Pack loading like they were suppose to once the Dim Pro showed up. Thanks for sharing, Meno!

I had this problem when X1 came out. I don't recall my exact steps but I more or less nuked 1.2 and got 1.5 working. The problem: SONAR doesn't see the upgrade as the same soft synth, so all my old projects that use DimPro show up with errors and I have to swap out the synth with the newer version. More of a drag: the patch settings get lost so it's more or less a safari to find out what sounds I was using. Good times.
