X1 Producer, EWQL Symphony Silver?

Returning to home recording after long hiatus and I'm a bit lost.  Last worked with Sonar 6.  Just installed X1 Producer Extended and EWQL Symphonic Silver.

After fighting with this much less familiar software for several hours I finally have my hardware responding correctly (I think)(Delta 44, Midiman 4x4 connected to 3 synths).  Haven't tried recording anything yet.

Anyway, I tried loading soft synths and couldn't get any sound.  Then I loaded a track with an instance of EWQL and again no sound.  Not sure at all what I may have missed since I've never used soft synths before.  What gives?

Did you insert a MIDI track and set the output of the MIDI track to the softsynth?

Whew!  I'm a dummy.  Got sound from synths (drums and True Pianos, etc. - with a lot of latency), but still nothing from EWQL.  Can't figure it out.  many thanks for getting me this far.

Could be MIDI cc7 (volume) and cc11 (expression).

With these types of libraries, you should typically always set these two (really, you should WORK them) in every track / patch that uses them.

I've seen various points of view about this, but once you know and understand, I think it's really quite simple.

There is a preverences option - something like "Zero all controllers on Stop".
A lot of people seem to "uncheck" (turn off) this option ... which is NOT the best at all.
There is another option ... something like "Search back controlller on Start".

Both those options should be turned ON.
That way, when you use MIDI CC to control Vol/Expression (or anything else), when you press Start / Play the last value used in the MIDI track will be fetched, so the following note will be played under the influence of the intended CC values.

You must however, then always remember, to actually set a MIDI CC for Vol/Expression at the start of every track ... which you should do anyway.

    Good luck :-)

    Cheers - Cliff

The first thing to do with EWQL is to load a patch - have you done this?

What Cliff says! Check your velocity...I remember loading a Cinematic Strings Lib and not getting any sound and this was the reason. Maybe you have it loaded but velocity, dynamics or something is zero so when you hit the keys you get silence.

Thanks I'll try altering velocity.  I have the education version so came with no documentation.  Funny thing is that whether in Sonar or as standalone the VU meters show a note is being played, the Midiman indicates it is seeing the note being played, but no sound.  Fingers crossed...

    Hey Todd,

I'd almost bet it's the MIDI cc7 (Volume) and cc11(Expression) you need to set - assuming you have a patch loaded.

    1)  Load instrument patch.
        Play some notes ... if no sound then;

    2)  Set/Send MIDI cc7 to 100 or above.
        Play some notes ... if no sound then;

    3)  Set/Send MIDI cc7 to 100 or above.
        Play some notes ...

Then come back and let us know the results.

    Cheers - Cliff

Also check the output routing of your audio tracks - make sure they are pointing either to your master bus or main outs.

OK, I'm stumped.  Other instruments play and record fine (with a lot of latency).  Session drummer works.  When I go to the track I have set up with EWQL all of the meters move when I play the note, the patch seems to be loaded.  I have checked the two boxes Cliff mentioned in midi preferences.  But still EWQL makes no sound.  I've tried it as a stand alone - using the EWQL interface without Sonar, loaded a patch, set the output to my sound card outs, the meter moves, but no sound.  What gives?

Cliff how do I change cc7?

I'm not convinced it's anything to do with CC numbers.

How are you inserting EW into Sonar?

The best way (IMO) is to go Insert > Soft Synth > EWQLSO and tick the 2 boxes which give you a separate Audio & Midi track - no point in messing with Simple Instrument Tracks as they are know to be a bit buggy at times.

Once you've done that, loaded a patch, and made sure your routing is correct, it should sound.

PS - you still haven't confirmed that you are a) loading a patch into EWQLSO and b) routed it's output correctly.

Me neither - seems the OP has a new setup, and never had this running, so it could be many things. Right back to basics.

Agree 100% - I only ever tinkered with simple instrument tracks when I first bought Sonar, I don't see any advantages to them, and I believe you're right about the buggy bit :-)

Todd did say in his last post that he's tried the "Standalone" program, loaded a patch, set the output to his soundcard and still no sound.

Makes my immediate thought that it's got to be something simple ... just can't thing what right now.
I'm nowhere near my DAW for several hours now, busy on other things.

Todd, what version of EW Play are you using ?., have you downoaded the latest ?.

What are your other system specs ?.
    System/processor ?.
    OS (XP / Vista / Win 7) ?.
    32 or 64 bit ?.
And, what sound card drivers are you using ? ASIO ? WDM ?

If you have a lot of latency, it could be a clue and could be related.

If he's running the original Silver edition it won't be iLok or Play, it'll be the Kompakt version, authorisation of which can be a royal PITA if you're not online.
