X1 / Windows issue
I recently installed the x1 demo and it automatically changed all the .cwp (open with) logos on my projects to X1, so that double-clicking the icon opened X1 and subsequently the .cwp file. The demo has now expired and as I suspected, the console view/ lack of colour customisation is still the deal breaker for me, so I'm not inclined to buy. So, to stop the cwp files from keep opening the expired demo version I tried using the right click "open with" function to set cwp back to 8.5PE as before, but it was not in the suggested programs list, so I used the Browse function to find 8.5 and clicked on that, but it didn't do anything abd will not add it to the list, so they all just remained as X1. Thinking that if X1 wasn't an option that it might go back to the way it was, I uninstalled X1. Now it wants to open everything with my old Sonar 5 prog and I have exactly the same problem as I had with x1. The cwp's all open just fine if I go into 8.5PE and open that way, but double clicking opens the old version 5 which I never want to do. I'm reluctant to uninstall all the old versions as I've heard that this can cause other issues. Any suggestions ? (OS = Win XP 32 SP3)

You need to fix this in Control Panel to change your file associations.

emwhy You need to fix this in Control Panel to change your file associations. Thanks - I've done that and the logo is now correct and it opens up 8.5PE but then says that it cannot find the .cwp. ie: "Windows cannot find G:\SONAR\3monkeys\3monkeys.cwp. Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again" Well, obviously I didn't type the name at all and all the files are in the same place they were before and all open normally if I start Sonar myself and access from there. If I right click and select Sonar5 to open the same .cwp, it gives me the same message again, but does actually open the .cwp despite this.

Serious answer Paulo. I don't know. On one computer (main DAW) X1 64bit opens a project (successfully) from a double clock. On my laptop, a double click opens the project in 32bit X1 (bot 32bit and 64bit are installed on bot machines). I'm staying subscribed to this fred in the event that someone actually comes up with the answer (and mebee it will help a dimbulb like me).

All your files got converted to X1 files. That means that the file association marker in those files was changed from 8.5 PE to X1. The fact that it goes to Sonar 5 is a glitch. You need to do some heavy registry editing on the files to change the language, which I couldn't point you to. If you get them to open in 8.5, save with a new name and remove the old files to another drive for now so windows doesn't look for them. When a file converts to X1, it takes on new population information due to the different layout of X1. So, when you try to load it back to 8.5, the markers and instructions don't match for layout and population of information into a specific area. I can't explain it any better than that. The conversion information is either missing or windows doesn't understand it. The best way to switch between versions is to save a wave file of the parts-tracks, free of plugins, into anew project-cwp. and then save it as a new file.

No you don't. Just right click on a project file i.e. cwp and set the program you want to open it. Make it is set as the default for those file types.

John, I've tried that about 5 times on my laptop. I cannot get .cwp to (default) open with X1 64bit. It continues to open with X1 32bit when I double-click on a .cwp file in a Windows Explorer browser. To my recollection on both computers when I installed 32bit X1 I specifically did not check any file associations in the CW installer. None the less, my laptop will not play nice no matter how many times I tell it the file association is SONARPDR.EXE in C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\SONAR X1 Producer.

Bapu try this, use the browse function in that dialog to goto the right version of X1. Than click on the sonarpdr.exe of the 64 bit version. If this doesn't do it than I don't know what will. Hopefully it will. Let me know. I have Sonar 8.5 installed 64 bits, I also have X1 32 bit installed my main Sonar is X1 64 bit. It will open a project file because it is the default for cwp files. The others I don't use much at all.

Paulo, A good way to do this is to set a Restore point just before installing a new program like the X1 demo. Then when you uninstall it you can run System Restore back to that point and go on living in the past like the new program never existed. If you didn't do this you can still try Restoring to a point before the program was installed. This will reset all your Registry settings to their previous state allowing you to open your files with Sonar 8. Steve

I had a similar problem. The only way I got it fixed was to reinstall the program. Mine was the opposite though, I installed 8.5 after X1 and everything wanted to open in 8.5. Reinstalling X1 solved the problem. It does seem kind of heavy handed but Win7 gave me no choice. Oh, I did try one other thing, changing the name of the 8.5 EXE file, re-associated, then it would open with X1, but I didn't know if it would cause other problems so changed it back and I did a reinstall. Definitely a Win7 problem...

Thanks for the responses all...... Old55 - yeah everything works fine if I open Sonar first and go through menu, so fortunately nothing is lost to me, just not quite working as it should. Bapu - finally a problem that isn't just me ! Hopefully someone will save us Crg - that sounds like a whole bunch of work that is probably beyond me TBH. I think I understand what you are saying, but if this is correct and it's looking for an X1 file, I don't understand why version 5 will find and open it - would the same not apply to that as it does with 8.5 ? John - to be clear, I have done that and it double-click does now open 8.5, but it says the .cwps are missing, which clearly isn't the case as I can open them all fine via 8.5 menu. Soens - good point - problem is that between installing x1 demo and removing it, I had to have a techie reinstall the OS because of a system boot problem, so unfortunately I lost my restore points in the process. Trevia - yeah I did think of trying that, but was hoping that there would be an easier way. I'll give it a little longer in the hope that one of the good folks here will come up with a quicker solution.

trevia Oh, I did try one other thing, changing the name of the 8.5 EXE file, re-associated, then it would open with X1, but I didn't know if it would cause other problems so changed it back and I did a reinstall. I tried that (exchanging the names X1=X1 64bit and 8.5 EXE=X1 32bit EXE in my case). IIRC after associating to X1 64bit, when I double clicked on the .cwp file name in a Windows Explorer window I was told SONRPDR.exe could not be found. As crg hints, it may be a Win 7 registry issue.

I think it's also project GUI code. Which could be a real bugger to straighten out. It's just a hunch on my part. Have you ever opened a .cwp project in notepad to read the code? If you compared an X1 project to a 8.5 PE project, you'd see differences. While I don't speak the language or really know what to change, it's obvious that there's a glitch in the conversion process when trying to open project data between the two hosts. If you can't figure it out, another thing to do is build a new project and populate the tracks with the audio and midi data. It's a long work around and the conversion between 64 bit projects and 32 bit projects is something I don't know about. We all want a quickie for this one and John had good answer that works, sometimes.

Not sure if it's still the same in Win7 but I've always had luck by... Open explorer browser>Tools>Folder options>File types tab. Find the .Cwp extension in the "registered file types" category> click the change button. Hope that helps.

Nope, that option (File Types) is no longer available from there in Win 7 (at least not on my Home and Pro installations).

Steve No. It did not. It simply made my X1 64bit program the "default" when I double click on a .cwp file in a Windows Explorer browser. I just opened 32bit X1 and opened a project that was opened (by double clicking on the file name in a Windows Explorer browser and saved using 64bit) and it opened. Re-read that I changed Data Values in the Registry. Those data values are what decided what program to open when I click on all Cakewalk file types such as .cwb, .cwp, .mid and templates etc. (including OMF, since X1 is my only OMF compatible host).

You should be able to do this without a registry hack by using file associations in Windows 7. control panel>programs>default programs>set associations (click start button then click "file associations") The option to "associate a file type or protocol with a specific program" gives you the most control. Scroll down to the .cwp extension and double click on the extension. Click browse and you will see where the program the extension is paired with is located, and you can then find the program that you want it associated with. If you are using a 64 bit Windows, then 64 bit programs are listed under your-program partition (usually C:\) "program files" but you 32 bit programs will be under C:\ "program files (x86)". Locate the appropriate program click the name and it appears in the box then click open and you should be set. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/change-which-programs-windows-uses-by-default

Anyway - for paulo, these tricks should work for you, but if they don't - you can always reinstall SONAR 8.5 (and patches) to set up the file associations. Personally, I wouldn't bother and would just open the files from within SONAR ;-)

I was just hoping there would be a click this, click that solution so that everything would be working as it should, especially as I only just had the OS freshly installed, so had a nice clean OS. It does really gets on my nerves when companies encourage you to try their products and then they screw up your pc .(shakes fist in general direction of CW ) Grrr to the bakers! ;)

Well the things the other guys are posting *should* work - but if it says it can't find files, that means besides associating .cwp files with the SONAR executable, you also need a couple of other parameters - it used to be something like %c or %p - I used to just find one file association and copy the settings for another file type. Windows 7 makes it "easier" (so there's less you can configure yourself) - so I don't know where these settings are now. To be honest - I would never open a SONAR file by clicking on it myself. I just stick a SONAR shortcut on my desktop - go straight in to it - and open up a file. If you *really* want to click on a file and have the association set up - just reinstall 8.5, and don't forget the patches. It's probably quicker than farting around with the other stuff anyway.
