X1 doesn't see my USB Mic when using ASIO drivers for my soundcard
I just got a Samson Meteor USB mic. (Best Buy has 'em now) However, X1b does not show it in the devices list when my soundcard (M-Audio ProKeys Sono 61) is set up to use ASIO drivers in Win 7. If I change the M-Audio drivers to WDM, the mic shows up as a USB device, and works this way. (FWIW, there are no special drivers for the Meteor mic.) However, I wanted to use ASIO for my M-Audio because I was experiencing audio dropouts, and I want the lowest possible latency. Why is this happening? Any advice? Thanks, Pat

You may only use one ASIO driver on a system at a time. With WDM you may use more than one driver. I imagine you may have to remove the M-audio ASIO driver if you want to see the Samson ASIO driver. Good Luck. best regards, mike

Mike, The Samson mic doesn't have an ASIO driver (or any special driver). It's a "class compliant" device. Thanks, Pat

Well, then that is why SONAR doesn't see it as an option when you are using SONAR in ASIO mode. Simple. I guess you already knew that... so I apologize for stating the obvious. Your only practical option is to use the WDM mode at it's best low latency setting. Good luck. best regards, mike

Mike, Actually, I did not know that, but that's apparently what it's doing. So, if you're using ASIO for a sound device, that's the only device that will show up in SONAR? It's not a bug, it's a severely crippling feature! Cheers, Pat

I don't know if it's Windows only or universal to ASIO on all OS. In either case it is not just the Cakewalk products that have this limitation. You can use multiple pieces of hardware in ASIO if they use the same driver. For example; you can use different MOTU boxes with the shared driver that MOTU sends out. You may be able to fool the system with a ASIO4all wrapper but that will not help you in a practical sense because you will not get the low latency that you are hoping for. best regards, mike

Only Windows uses ASIO. Because only Windows NEEDS ASIO. Apparently ASIO was invented as a solution to the latency caused by the multiple layers of abstraction between an audio app and the device. ASIO provides a more direct route to the device. Not sure why multiple devices can't have their own ASIO drivers. Probly cuz ASIO does its thing by being simple (and dumb). Cheers, Pat

Thanks for teaching me something.... I never thought about it but I assumed that ASIO was available for Linux and Apple stuff (although I do know about core audio) as well. Thanks again. best regards, mike

ASIO was invented by Steinberg so it could have a low latency driver for both Macs and Windows platforms. Emagic had its own audio driver model too (EASI). VST was also created for the same need to have a cross platform plugin model. WDM is far better for low level kernel audio streaming (its built into the OS like core audio is for Macs now ASIO is not and has a layer that is not as low level as WDM audio) but because its (WDM) a huge model for just about any driver type for Windows there are lots of ways to screw it up in creating an audio driver.

I stand corrected. My research on the web led me to believe that OS X and Linux don't have the latency problems that Windows has, and don't need ASIO for that. But maybe there are other reasons for using ASIO? That said, a more general question: Are USB mics a bad choice for X1 or DAWs in general? I'm seeing lots of stuff about timing issues and monitoring latency. Cheers, Pat

You can always try ASIO4All (.com). Also, WDM may actually work just fine. What is bothering my about WDM in Sonar is this stupid message about some devices not supporting all sampling rates and bit widths etc. I don't want to limit the sampling rate because the mirophone in the webcam can't support it. I agree with Brando. I think anyone is gonna run into trouble, eventually, using a USB mic, especially when using any of the popular DAW software for projects having medium to more heavy work loads. In such a scenario, using ASIO driver mode is usually preferred because of a typical more robust performance over other driver types. I recommend a mic having a good ole fashion XLR or TRS interface connectivity.

The problem with USB mic is that your computer treats it as a separate soundcard, but still it hasn't got the adjusting possibilities of a soundcard, and it's not able to take care of the whole audio-traffic of a DAW. So problems are about inevitable.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

MME is the best bet for a USB mic....Also, I think there is something in CW's documentation regarding this.....
