X1 has gone all Picasso on my you know what!!

No foolin.  In every project I worked on today the GUI on X1 would intermittently and seemingly at random just "go all picasso" on me.  Large black bars both horizontal and vertical with toolbar icons and different color squares would just pop up.  If I clicked anywhere on them they might change to a hole or another icon or disappear a whole section of the bar or nothing at all.  Plus my CPU usage meter section of the control bar grew an inch higher and protruded to the top of the screen.  Maybe I was about to "tear the roof off the sucker".  Anyone else seeing this...or am I just "flashing back" to the sixties again??

Is it only X1? Any other programs doing it? Either 8.5.3 or Word or browser?

Have you changed anything in your system, updates etc?

    Cheers, Peter.

What kind of video card are you  using?  This doesn't sound like a software problem, necessarily, unless it's related to your video driver.  Just a shot in the dark, olpal.

I'm with Lynn. It sounds like a graphic card related issue. Is your GPU overheating, perhaps?

If you use five or six other graphics and audio programs and none of them are showing any issues, it's definitely your video card.

Same with crashes. If your alternate DAW or audio editor don't crash on your system and X1 does, your system setup is screwy.

Probably a bad driver, or memory, or anything...

I was dragging some clips around last night and they fractured into a graphic stew.

    Losing patience...

This sounds definitely like a video card problem. Fragmenting images, strange colours and slow response time all point in one direction - no 3d acceleration! That would be the explanation X1 is especially having trouble, because X1 is using (parts of) 3d acceleration to speed up the interface (as far as I understand).

There are several reasons this problem could occur.

If you have a "bigger" video card make sure you connected the extra power plugs (square white plugs with yellow/black cables - most times attached to the back end of the card). Without this extra power the card only works in non-accelerated mode.

Do NOT use the "general" drivers installed by default by Windows. In a lot of cases this are only non-accelerated drivers, slowing down X1 because some screen actions have to be "emulated". Always use the latest drivers from your card maker (or the chip maker - like Nvidia or ATI).

Make sure your video card has enough cooling. Check for too much dust in the ventilator and make sure there is a good air flow. If a card runs too hot it can switch off acceleration to protect itself, leading to slow down of the display.

Make sure you do not run the card in "economy mode" or "power save" mode. This lowers the clock rate of your GPU and card memory - leading to graphical slow down problems. Make sure the card is always running at full speed if you have graphical glitches.

Sometimes cards can be damaged by long-during overheating etc. In that case you can get graphic glitches just like you describe. Time to replace the card!

And at last - do not use older cards with bad or non acceleration. This slows down screen refresh/redraw/acceleration dramatically and can make X1 unworkable.

Do not forget - a computer is as good as it most bad parts. If you invest in a super processor, top-of-the-range audio card and use a second hand cheap video card - you NOT going to be happy....

I think not having the right graphics card may be a factor or your memory sticks are not equal..so the maths are not adding up.

When ever my computer does not have enough memory, you tend to get these faults...maybe, check the settings of your graphics card and defrag your computer atleast every other day...

I think Cakewalk need to examine their system specs for X1 users and put up the correct system recommendations.

I experienced the same behaviour with frozen tracks that were in a track folder. Only the tracks within that folder were suddenly completely screwed up as described by yorolpal. Other tracks were still OK.

I have no problems whatsoever with other programs including another DAW (that I will not mention :-).... In fact I have forgotten about the entire X1 thing and am now making music with that other DAW (making me very happy).

In my opinion it's most certainly due to buggy software. But.... we should keep an open mind. Could also be a combination of drivers and the software. Never say never....

Re:X1 has gone all Picasso on my you know what!! 2011/02/11 06:42:19 (permalink)
I had this issue as of yesterday afternoon. I have been using X1a as my main DAW since the middle of January with no issues in my studio after downloading the upgrade in December and experimenting until I felt ready to move from 8.5. Although, I have the tendency to try to make it crash after the client leaves. No problems until yesterday I experienced the "Picasso Effect".
Two things come to mind. It occured after I reset my MOTU 24i/o input from +4 to -10 to use Guitar Rig for some tracks. I did this from the Sonar preference page as opposed to exitting Sonar, set the the card, and re-open Sonar. I also used V-Vocal to tweak a slightly flat note. I used V-Vocal a few days ago and had no issues at all. So, question, Possible it could be setting the preference for the MOTU without closing Sonar first, OR a problem with Guitar Rig, OR V-Vocal related. I must say it never crashed. I just closed Sonar and re-opened and all was good.
On a happier note, This has really been the only trouble I encountered with X1 outside of the Audiosnap issue. What do you think?

Is it tending more toward the cubist or purple periods?

It may just be lamenting some emotional loss or past relationship.

Unplug the monitor from the card, unscrew the card from the MB and just put it back and reconnect everything.
