X1 installation error - delete file failed . code 5 . access denied [did install as admin]
Hi guys. I keep running into the same problem. when i try to install X1 i get twenty minutes in and up come this error: An error has occurred while trying to replace the existing file: "Windows\system32\msvcr71.dll" "delete file failed . code 5 . access denied" Since i run the Sonar_Producer_part1_X1.exe in administrator mode, i am at a loss to what to do next? I tried the 'retry' option several times. Didn't work. The only other options offered are 'abort' or 'ignore/skip' [not recommended]. I am installing the 64bit version on Windows7 64 bit OS PC with 4gig RAM and plenty of disk space. I have Sonar 8.5 producer already installed. I have tried to install twice with same results. I need help with this. Thanks, Bob

That is a dll file that is part of Visual C++ library redistribution package. It used to be a standard part of the system32 files but is now usually included in the programs(sonars) distribution package of C++ library to ensure that the correct version is being used I believe. I assume it is looking for an already installed version to replace. If this is correct then selecting the Ignore/skip may solve the problem as it should be included with the installation. If that doesn't work then: 1. There were a number of Visual C++ updates from the latest Microsoft/WIndows updates. Perhaps it will be included there. If you haven't done so already do a Windows update using custom and select any additional updates referring to the Visual C++. You may have to do the update 2 or 3 times as there were some sequential updates that after one was done, there was another now available. Then try a reinstall to see if it solved it. 2. If 1 doesn't work then try a download of a Visual C++ redistributable package that should have it included. (you could likely just download the driver from any number of driver sources but I never have felt that comfortable in downloading from an unknown source so if there is any way to get it directly from Microsoft I usually use that option.) Then try an install again. If not solved then call Cakewalk(or call them anyway if you feel more comfortable doing that). Good luck!

Another thing is to try the install with UAC turned off if you haven't tried that.

Some other process has msvcr71.dll open. Re-boot and close every running application, including anti-virus and anti-spyware utilities.

Thanks for the answers guys. I have tried rebooting and installing clean but the results were the same. I also have the latest windows updates - not sure if they explicitly incude C++ updates though. I'll check that out. For now i selected "skip/ignore' and everything is OK so far. So far the old DLL seems to be no problem on the surface at least.

Yeah, but do you have User Account Control (UAC) Running when you try the installation? UAC has been known to prevent installers from writing to the hdd. Once something is installed, you can enable UAC again, but it's such a pain in the butt, I always keep it off. And note that if it is on, after you disable it, a reboot is needed to actually turn it off. And, of course. bitflipper's note is a good one.

You're probably perfectly safe ignoring the error message.
