X1 learning curve

I finally bit the bullet and bought the upgrade to X1 (Studio).  I'm in the middle of a project and don't have much time to work on this right now, so, before I load the upgrade, I'm wondering what sort of learning curve to expect to get up to speed with X1.  (That is, maybe I should finish my project first then load the upgrade.)

Yes, I would finish your project first and then start learning X1. The interface and workflow in X1 are very different from past versions of SONAR.

Agreed, especially if you're on a deadline.  You're going to want to kick back and take some time learning X1.  Fortunately, it's a joy to work with, not something to be dreaded.  It just takes a little getting used to.

it depends on how complex your project is/what features you use, etc. IMO.  I still run 7 on my main DAW, but I have X1c up on it as well and really seem to be using X1 more because it is just very intuitive and natural by comparison to do the same things.  I don't think I've looked up anything yet, the interface is so much simpler and more straightforward there's only so many places to look for anything.   But maybe I'm overly optimistic, as I don't have a time crunch on anything right now.  Maybe the right thing for me to say is that I think it is easier to use than the old versions, which I've had since v1.0.

I switched to X1 for a mix. I didn't want to learn how to use it in front of a client while recording. In mixing, I could test a lot more and make sure it was somewhat stable without worrying about the system dying in front of an audience. I did choose the mix that was not on a tight timeline.

Thanks Scott, Heather, Michael and Fooman.  I'll restrain my curiosity until the next project, which will be fun one... so I can learn and play at the same time.  I confess, I hadn't considered having both versions loaded at the same time... that's a comfort so it's not an all-or-nothing proposition.

Scott - Great seeing your response!  After I started the download I noticed the Sonar 8 Power on the table next to me and my old copy of Sonar 4 Power on the bookshelf and wondered if I needed to look for X1 Power.  Thanks for the years of help.  ;-)

You do know that the old Studio DAW stays where it is....and the new X1 becomes a second DAW...right?

In other words..... X1 will not over-write or remove Studio. You will have 2 completely discrete DAW's to choose from. They will not interfere with each other in any way.

I have MC4,5,6 and X1 on my machine....I got X1 in the "crossgrade" deal.....So.... I now have the ability to choose any of the 4 DAWs to run on a given project.... and, I can use any of the 4 to work on the same project at different times if I so choose.

So, you can safely load and start to learn and use X1 and still use the older Studio to work on this ongoing project with no worries about having to relearn a new platform in the middle of a project to finish it.

Thanks, Sean! I hope you're enjoying the book.

There is only one edition of the SONAR X1 Power book, which came out shortly after X1 was released. So it doesn't include new features that were added after X1 was released. But anyone wanting to learn X1 will still find the book very useful. The new features added in Expanded, etc. comprise only a small portion of the many features that X1 provides.
