X1 on 6 core

Heya Forum,

Anyone contemplating running X1 on the AMD 6 core processor?  What chipset?  Thx!

i wouldn't  get an Amd 6 core if i was you Peter. Any decent intel Quad core will kill it day and night

I'm running an Intel hex core i7 980 w/12GB of ram.  Scott @ ADK put it together for me and it SCREAMS!!  Running Win7 64 bit.
It's stable, and when I record BFD2 drums using Roland pads and RME audio interface at 32 bits, my latency is so low, it's about the same as the speed of sound moving through the air, from the drum to the drummers ears.  Really!

And I can now load the entire kit into ram.  And with hyperthreading, I'm actually running 12 virtual cores ... and Sonar handles it easily.

The chip had only been out for a month when I bought it this past spring, but it was time for me to upgrade, and I won't need to do a computer upgrade for several years.  But the chip was so expensive at that time, I had to ponder it for a couple weeks.

But my system, right now, and especially with Sonar utilizing all those cores, etc., NEVER even breathes hard.  No matter what I throw at it.

What interface is this with?  I get nothing but clicks & pops on my current laptop and M-Audio Fast Tracks Ultra USB, but hoping they will go away when my new i7 quad core arrives.

Clicks and pops could be how you've set your latency.  If you're recording audio, you could probably set your audio at 256 samples and not notice latency.  The higher you set your sample rate, up to a point, the easier it is on your system and it helps you get rid of clicks and pops.  When you're done tracking, and you move to the mix part of your project, raise your sample rate.  Your transport may move a bit more sluggish, but you'll be able to add more plug-ins before reaching the limit your cpu can handle.

Another problem can be your MAudio drivers.  Go to the Maudio web site and be sure you have the latest version of drivers downloaded.

If your audio driver mode is set at WDM, try changing it to ASIO, or vice versa.

Also, some laptops can make noise with ground loops.  Try using a three-prong to two-prong electrical ground lift with your power cord.

    Cheers,

A lot of the benchmarks for the AMD hex are very promising for applications such as sonar....even against an i7 950.

I don't think the i7 hex core is a fair comparison as in canada, cheapest is $999.99, for that dough I could build a server amd platform with 16 cores and boat loads of ram that would literally smoke the i7 hex's.

But that being said, the mobo's for the amd 6's don't seem to have the "candy" that the i7's do....usb 3.0, triple channel ram....and an exact build comparison yeilds only a $50 difference, so if I were to build today......i7 950 would be my choice.

    Hey dmmi,

I just found this mobo: Asus M4A89TD PRO/USB3.
    http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=fLIjRELzxMxkH2UQ&templete=2
It has USB 3 and 6 GB SATA, street about $175.  Street of top dawg Phenom II x6 about $225.  Um, that seems to be adding up to a *whole* lot less than the 1K Intel hex!  40% of the Intel proc. price for CPU & mobo?

Have any of you guys used G-skills Ripsaw memory?  Decent specs, 1/3 less than Crucial.  Add 8 GB RAM to above for a mere $100.

PS: It *is* dual channel memory, don't think we can fix that.

no...we cant fix that, but try pricing out a build with i7 950...i think, the 3.02 GHz, 1366 (not the hex....that thing is rediculous)....if you can shave some dough with an amd hex compared to this one, i think you'll be quite happy...and make sure you get a mobo with sata 3...i think thats what u meant anyway. hard drives are bottlenecks in most systems.

I have an AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition with an MSI 790FX-GD70 AM3 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard. Coming from a 4 core, i was able to reduce latency and UAD induced CPU load consederably. About half i think. Its really a solid setup.

At this point you're better off waiting for Sandy Bridge if you can.

    1) the Phenom 6 core is only as fast as the Intel 750 (bottom of the budget line)
    2) cost is the same or less for the Intel
    3) you can NOT build a 16 core for the price os the 980x system not even close...
    4) if you did the 980x would still outperform...
    5) with the right AMD mobo it has all the same "Candy"

yes the 950 is a great option and for tighter budget so is the 760.

Do you mean because prices will drop further like on the 950?  Or will the Sandy Bridge be "that much" better without costing too much more?
