X1D suddenly unstable..
OK, this is not a critical post, I am merely trying to debug my system. X1 Expanded and then X1D was running flawlessly since their installs.. and all of a sudden I get endless hangs, Out Of Memory Errors and what not. Seriously bad. So bad that I have to open some songs in safe mode just to try and save the audio. I did four things before this problem started: 1) installed FXpansion Orca Free Synth 2) Installed Ohmforce Frohmage Free 3) Installed Ohmforce Sympthom Free 4) Installed the new Cakewalk PC2a Leveling Amp I have since uninstalled and removed from my registry the three free synths and plugs (points 1,2 and 3). Only Cakewalk PC2A remains.. and so does the instability. Has ANYONE else encountered more crashes since PC2A? I run Win 7 32bit, with an RME HDSP 9652 PCI card with the latest drivers. Any input would be appreciated. And yes, I have sent about 20 auto-problem reports via Sonar! :O) Sincerely, Ludwig

Have you got an earlier System Restore point you can go back to, another type of system image?

Yes, and none of the the Windows Restore Points want to restore - I tried all morning. Really strange. I have a cloned drive, but my point is trying to spot the problem, not avoid it :O)

Another thing worth doing is running a memory check overnight and perhaps a stress tester to, just to make sure it's not a hardware issue. That's a lesson I learned the hard way.

Good call FBB. In fact I'd start by making sure all your RAM & other cards are seated properly. When was the last time you vacuumed out the insides? Overheating can cause this sort of thing.

I have a few of those freebies and X1d but no crashes. System Restore, IIRC, only restores critical Windows files ( registry, OS files etc) and not, for example, any files to do with Sonar. At the risk of regurgitating other freds, its better to use image software. Ludwig, have you tried saving the project under a different name then adding the audio files to it ? Worked for me when i had a corrupt project. Cheers, Jerry

I use Heavy Load which will stress every thing including RAM but probably not as well as a dedicated RAM test. Age of system is not particularly relevant to hardware failures BTW.

After I installed PC2a Leveling Amp, the next time I opened a project and, from the console view, attempted to show the ProChannel on the Master bus, SONAR crashed. It happened a couple of times. I then tried opening it on a normal track, and it worked and didn't crash. Then I tried again on a bus, and it worked from then on. Not a clue as to WHY it would work in that circumstance. Will update if I see more issues or find a resolution.

If any stick of Ram IS going to fail, there's a 90% chance it will happen in the first 3 months of it's life, or so my Daw builder told me.

Hi Ludwig, Sorry to hear you're having problems. Quick question - is this a general problem since you installed the PC2A (and others)? Or is it only happening on projects that are actually using the PC2A? i.e. are other projects are running normally? ~Bob

I get endless hangs, Out Of Memory Errors and what not. I would test the RAM and run a general stress-test... just to be sure the core hardware is 100% stable. Since you're running a 32Bit OS... it is possible you're running out of RAM (especially if you're using virtual instruments). ie: Superior 2.0 can use 1.5GB of RAM for the full kits. You can blow thru 4GB of RAM pretty quick. Once this issue is sorted, create an up-to-date backup image file (using True Image or similar). It's cheap insurance that you'll always quickly/easily be able to get back to a properly functioning DAW. Issues crop up from time to time... In a pro environment, you don't always have time to trouble-shoot (at least not while clients are present or in the heat of a deadline). A simple way to help "bullet-proof" your DAW...

I have have problems with my system since I updated to X1D but I did install some windows updates and EZKeys by toontrack around the same time. I'm running an RME Fireface 400 so it may be releated tothe RME drivers? I have emailed the RME support and I'm waiting to hear back from them.

Hi Jim, I have done mixes much bigger than this with absolutely no problems, so I really doubt it is an actual memory issue. It's an i7-2600 with 4GB on the board, which runs at 10% or so, even on big songs with lots of sidechain, sends and busses.. . I'll do a stress test if I can find relevant software...

This caught my interest because I lost my RME driver a couple days ago after installing PC2A. I have the latest driver and firmware from RME and never had a problem until X1d and PC2A were involved. I finally recovered the driver after spending two days of system restores and image restores. I'm now very reluctant to turn my computer off because I'm afraid of losing my driver again, but I know eventually I will. As I said, my system was rock solid since the X1c upgrade, but now I don't know. I would first suspect a bad memory stick if you have ran similar mixes in the past with no problems and you are getting memory errors. Does your system see all of the installed memory?

OK, some more data on this problem: see if you guys can fathom this.. Some of the problem files are OK and play 100% fine until I try to cut any wavs up. Then it stops saving and hangs.. FYI there is a lot of automation on these songs, incl busses etc.

I also had a rash of hangs and crashes that seemed to coincide with the installation on pc2a. X1D working perfect before that. But my timing was such that I had also started updating old projects. I didn't know if it was the old projects or pc2a. Now, because of your post, I'm thinking it was pc2a. I had probably 30 crashes inside of 2 days. However these crashes seemed to have gone away even on the old projects. Everything cleared up. Very strange. I did report to cakewalk with the minidumps that were created.

Here I was thinking that 64 bit was way more stable, chek the thread http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?&m=2529404&mpage=2 In 32bit X1C build 425,my laptop has suddenly become way more stable than 64 X1D. Also I could NEVER get my Metronome to work on my laptop in 64bit X1[every version]my laptop refuses to crash in 32bit X1C Expanded build 425,and the Metronome works! Sorry, this doesn't really apply to your problem, just that my previous stance of 64bit being way more stable HAS BEEN SHOT TO PIECES! Bob.

Hey Bob, FWIW, Stability has nothing to do with an app being 64Bit vs. 32Bit. Neither is more/less prone to stability.
