X1b and X1 Power Book Evaluation

I have been a Sonar 8.5 user for a little over one year and just wanted to give my 2 cent opinion. First and foremost.....JESUS what a challenge, 80% of it my learning curve. But, the 20% bugs really threw in the confusion factor. The best thing I did was to buy a new computer from the start with 8 GB of Ram, so I minimized a lot of interface and running issues.

I am a EE by trade and deal with hardware/software for the last 30+ yrs and this whole audio engineering thing has STILL kicked my @**. I understand now why it takes recording artists a couple of years to produce an album. I cant imagine how tuff it must be on a new non technical person getting going, and thank goodness for this forum as it has helped a lot. I have not had to call cakewalk, not one single time yet.

The Software: Its pretty un-believable to me what it can do. If you combine the software with a good studio room with Aurelex or similar acoustic foam, which I have and have good mics, I believe you can make close to studio quality recordings as possible for minimum money. Ten years ago, I would of never imagined we could do this. I know Sonar has had a TON of bugs and many have been VERY frustrating. My advice to anyone new is to do plenty of "SAVE AS"'s, and you can minimize the pain. I think they have done a pretty damn good job with X1b!!! I can now use V-Vocal and audio snap and much more and I think congratulations is in order. I also think, in general Roland has done an excellent job of giving us a tool worth thousand of dollars for hundreds, so, a little development pain, I dont mind too much.

X1 POWER BOOK: Un-Flippin Believable!!!!! My congratulations and heartfelt thanks go out to this Scott Garrigus fellow! Damn thats an awesome book! I just got it Friday and have highlighted and bookmarked SO MANY areas I was weak in and it is finally the reference information I needed. I have watched a Gazillion hours of tutorials and such. Yes, they all help, but in my opinion, Cakewalk is not methodical in their teachings and there are a lot of assumptions made and a TON of important stuff left out. This book really ties it all together for me, I only wish I would of bought it, (8.5 version) a year ago.

There wasn't an an 8.5 version - so holding off was a great decision , the X1 version includes all the 8.5 updates as well which is what makes it that much better.

Well, there goes the value when you try to sell it on eBay (or eBay replacement) in 2061. It won't be mint condition anymore

It is a good book isn't it? Great work Scott!

I am you multiplied geometrically. There is so much I still don't understand. I have tied with previous versions, gotten so frustrated I would stop... come back in a few months after forgetting everything I learned before and try again with the same results. It always seemed that by the time I got anything to work I would be so frustrated that the inspiration would be long gone. I was also sidetracked by life... I have more time now and I am taking my time. I have been reading, watching the groove3 vids, got X1 POWER... and waited for X1b.  I have tried to get several interfaces to work, to get that behind me. The Line6 UX-2 seems to work best for me, the XOOM R-16 is a pain in the arse but i'll keep trying with it.

I have three tunes ready to go and am going to start next week trying to do some recording. I am not going to stop this time but am going to push through it until I understand how to use X1 and make it do what I want.

You are right about presumptions. I and I am sure, other newbies, don't know the meanings of some terms that are freely used by those who teach... like, I don't understand the concept of automation but i'm sure once I get around to using it, then I will understand what it does.

Well, back to the reading and the videos.

PS... it would all be easier if someone hadn't put pictures o' wimmen on the internets... sometimes I gets distracted. laff...

Ya Scott writes some great tutorials.  I had a Digitech GNX4 pedal that was a monster to learn until I got his book, then once again when I started with Sonar 8 he helped me along.

I was waiting for the Kindle version of the X1 book, but gottahaveititis struck and I ordered from Amazon last week.  Should be here tuesday or Wednesday! ! ! !

And welcome to the fun, I empathise with those trying to make a living and dealing with X1.  But for the home hobbiest, it is an amazing tool.

Man that's the very story with me and Sonar. Never, never could get my head wrapped around any concept till life overtook me and I, as you, forgot more than I ever learned. I too have vowed to get this thing figured out and am just now able to follow an idea through to some semblance of a tune. My biggest disadvantage is that I am also not a musician so the learning curve is very steep indeed. X1 has made it easier for me though and I'm not why. My brain just relates to it better than past versions.

    Hey Steve,

Thanks so much for the wonderful comments about my book! I really appreciate it and am happy to hear you're getting so much out of it. I am definitely methodical about my work. It comes from my perfectionist personality, which works well in tech writing.

    Thanks!

Hey Scott, just a curiosity question, how long did it take to write the book? It's very thorough, and I like the full-size format. One thing that I absolutely love is that there aren't too many screenshots, which I find pad books out. I have the software here in front of me, so I don't need to see massive amounts of screenshots in a book. You seem to really get this, and I appreciate the focus on describing the steps of technique.

Im being serious here, what is profane in using JESUS, I dont believe it was out of disrespect nor in vain.  just my opinion.  I may be wrong and I certainly dont want to start a religious debate.  Honestly, what was wrong with that? I dont understand.

Just ordered the book, so I am looking forward to it. I've never had one of Scott's books before, but I've never heard anything but praise for them.

Just heard from Amazon that my copy has been shipped!!!!

    Should be here tomorrow.

I guess I'll have no excuse then to actually start using X1 properly.

Tried fooling around with it last night, and I'm still finding entering Midi notes into the prv a complete pita.

Those free Groove 3 videos are quite helpful while you wait for the book.

Thanks, David! Oh... I think it took at least 6 months (maybe a little longer) because the software changed so much and the workflow in all the views changed as well. There's still a good number of figures in there, but you're right, I like to only include them when necessary and for specific things that need to be highlighted. In past editions, some of the figures were just there to show what parts of the interface looked like, which I found was wasting to much space. I was able to pack more info into this edition and I'm glad it shows!
