Reporting back with an update!
I contacted Cakewalk support who worked with me to test out a few scenarios. Long story short, it looks like a potential driver issue. One item of note from tech support is a theory around the usb port configuration and their associated chip sets. For example, my workstation has six usb ports in the rear (2x2x2), and two in the front (1 over 1). The thought is potential conflicts when using the rear ones, due to the existing items that are also connected in that area (next to mouse, etc.). Apologies if this explanation sounds crazy, a picture might do better justice. Better yet have a hardware engineer explain!
Using the front usb port, did not resolve the periodic midi connection dropout, so the suggestion was to contact M Audio to discuss the driver issue.
I took a different route and purchased the Roland-Cakewalk 3X3 interface as I needed to get things operational in short order. Long term, I'd like a bigger interface, but wanted to at least try something in the interim.
After downloading the latest drivers, and hooking things up, I 've had zero issues to date. New projects work as expected, old projects work as expected.
One final note, as there was one self inflicted error that I will own up to. During my initial setup with the M Audio, X1 and my external sound module I incorrectly used the wrong instrument definition. I had picked the correct manufacture, but was one model off in the selection. The majority of the patch definitions were the same, but NOT identical. This was the root cause of me thinking that M Audio and/or Cakewalk was not picking up the correct patch values, when I selected them. I'm a doofus, as I didn't figure this one out until I had double clicked a patch name, looked at the corresponding patch number, and compared it against my sound module patch definitions.
Thanks again for the poster comments!
