X1c and Midi Interface Issues

Running Windows 7, Sweetwater Creation Station, X1c, and M Audio 4X4 USB Midi Interface, in support of this issue.

Brand new system, less than a month old. M Audio interface is several years old, with zero issues on previous computer, used within a week of getting the new system and software.

I downloaded the current Win 64 drivers from M Audio, and installed per instructions. Connected the interface, which promptly displayed in Device Manager.

Depending on Sonar's mood, the device periodically shows up in midi device preferences, and sometimes actually works for a short period of time. I've noticed that midi program changes suddenly become non responsive, followed by eventual drop out of the entire device from settings.

I tested against previous projects created in older versions of Sonar and also get inconsistent results. Projects that worked one day, suddenly lose all midi instrument, channel, and port mapping. Everything defaults to none, or channel 2.

To say I'm frustrated is to put it lightly. I've seen similar postings on the forums, but am not clear on whether this is a potential M Audio issue, Sonar issue, or???? I don't think this is a Windows 7, or Creation Station issue.

Any comments are appreciated. I'm in contact with Sweetwater, and plan to contact M Audio and Cakewalk Support as well. I cannot afford to be down for the count much longer on this one.

    Hey "JonnyBoy", How goes it?

I had the same problem with Sonar forgetting midi devices. You can check, but I think midi preferences are remembered by project. In other words, once I'm working on a project there are no issues until I open another project. Sonar always saw my devices but at times it seemed it seem to deselect them in preferences.

I recently bought a Quad Capture interface and since then no issues. My A-Pro controller gets lost occasionally and I have to reselect it. All my drivers are current but there's no question that sometimes a new driver isn't the best driver. That sounds like a pretty robust system to me and I'll bet Jim R. can point you at the best driver.

    Good luck.

    Regards, John

I use a MIDIman 4x4 under windows 7x64 and to cut to the chase the drivers are rubbish.

Mine do seem to have settled down a little now but until recently I had to un-install them before every shut down and then dis-connect the unit, reconnect it on reboot to get it to work. If you search the web it is also a very common issue.

I also have several other MIDI interfaces and this is the only one I ever have problems with. Co-incidentally it is the only one from M-audio, that tells me something about who's gear I won't be buying ever again.

Make sure Windows is completely up-to-date and try a complete un-install with a re-install. As I said mine are much better now but still occasionally go missing. The 'fix' above has become so routine for me I barely notice doing it now.

    Reporting back with an update!

I contacted Cakewalk support who worked with me to test out a few scenarios. Long story short, it looks like a potential driver issue. One item of note from tech support is a theory around the usb port configuration and their associated chip sets. For example, my workstation has six usb ports in the rear (2x2x2), and two in the front (1 over 1). The thought is potential conflicts when using the rear ones, due to the existing items that are also connected in that area (next to mouse, etc.). Apologies if this explanation sounds crazy, a picture might do better justice. Better yet have a hardware engineer explain!

Using the front usb port, did not resolve the periodic midi connection dropout, so the suggestion was to contact M Audio to discuss the driver issue.

I took a different route and purchased the Roland-Cakewalk 3X3 interface as I needed to get things operational in short order. Long term, I'd like a bigger interface, but wanted to at least try something in the interim.

After downloading the latest drivers, and hooking things up, I 've had zero issues to date. New projects work as expected, old projects work as expected.

One final note, as there was one self inflicted error that I will own up to. During my initial setup with the M Audio, X1 and my external sound module I incorrectly used the wrong instrument definition. I had picked the correct manufacture, but was one model off in the selection. The majority of the patch definitions were the same, but NOT identical. This was the root cause of me thinking that M Audio and/or Cakewalk was not picking up the correct patch values, when I selected them. I'm a doofus, as I didn't figure this one out until I had double clicked a patch name, looked at the corresponding patch number, and compared it against my sound module patch definitions.

Thanks again for the poster comments!
