X1c and a lost staff notation functionality
Against the advice of the little voice in my head I installed X1c today. I believed from the fixes etc. that it would be worthwhile. However, I use the staff view for notation a lot and now find it frustrating becuase it seems it's lost a useful function. Before I could change a note duration by clicking on other notes recorded or entered on the staff. Example, after entering quarter-notes I could then click on an eighth-note somewhere else on the staff in order to enter a series of eighth-notes without having to go to the tools hud to change note resolution to eighth notes. Unfortunately, it doesn't work like that anymore in X1c. Anyone else experience this?

It has always worked such that if you click on a note the value of that note becomes the new default for new notes. Not any more? Yikes, they're really going backwards with the staff view, the lack of attention to detail is overwhelming. I too use the staff view extensively and had to take X1 off my DAW for another reason, which completely ended my relationship with X1: The instrument pane in the staff view is no longer linked to the active track. So whichever track you choose in that pane, you won't hear playback when using a MIDI keyboard, and, you won't get that track selected in track view. Major error... I am back with Sonar 7 64 bit on a new Windows 7 machine, it works fine. Plus, it does everything I need it to do. It's discouraging to find that the staff view, so important to composers, orchestrators and arrangers, has suffered much under X1. It gets little thought, while new bells and whistles, most of which I don't use, keep multiplying. Very strange ideas about what good music composition software should be. Perhaps Cakewalk will one day take a more serious direction with their flagship product. Cubase is looking more and more like a future possibility with me--the Europeans have a much deeper appreciation of music notation, perhaps because it was invented there some 12 centuries ago and the power of it as a graphic representation of music is well understood. But I have since rolled back to a prior restore point and back to X1b so that part of the staff view notation works now. I'll stick with X1b for now. Yea, I share the wish that Cakewalk would pay more attention to the staff view. Still, I like X1. It just could be so much more awesome with a major upgrade of the staff view.

It works fine here. Make sure in the staff view you have the following options set: View -> Display Resolution -> 1/32 Checked Edit -> Fill Durations Unchecked In the drop down list of the Control Bar for the draw note durations, check "Last Selected". Then you should be good to go. If you don't uncheck "Fill Durations" from the Staff pane's Edit list, it will extend the note duration to fill the bar. Good luck. Cheers - Cliff

cliffr In the drop down list of the Control Bar for the draw note durations, check "Last Selected". Yeah, that was actually one of the things listed under new features in the release notes: Last Note Selected for Draw Tool The duration of the last clicked note is now remembered when the ‘Last Selected’ item is checked in either the Control Bar or HUD. When the draw duration is set to ‘Last Selected’ the draw duration will be whatever the last note clicked on in the Staff, Piano Roll or Inline Piano Roll views.

Cheers - Cliff That's good to know that the OP's complaint is because of overlooking that new choice. What about the instrument pane in the staff view? Has anyone noticed it no longer selects the active track? Jerry www.jerrygerber.com
