X2 Export Problem: Mixdowns Consistently Contain One Track
Thanks for reading! I've been having a problem mixing down (exporting) a project in X2 PE. The resulting file consistently only contains one track (used to be dry drum track, now dry keyboard track) I'm selecting "Entire Mix" iand de-selecting "Fast Bounce" in the export dialog box I've tried uninstalling both the ASIO drivers and Sonar X2 PE. Also bounced and froze everything. Tracks and busses meter during export. After export, the project only plays the track that mixed down, and I have to close it without saving and re-open it to get it to play normally. Playback is normal and without dropout. Any clues for the clueless? Thanks for reading!

Make sure all the tracks you want to bounce are selected. I usually do Ctrl+A before mixing or exporting.

yup, CTRL-A is your friend during mixdowns.

Need proof? The cat in Guitarmech111's avatar hit Ctrl-A prior to mixdown. I rest my case.

Craig, Guitarmech 111, Thanks for your replies. I had not been selecting all tracks prior to export, as I thought that selecting "Entire Mix" in the export dialog accomplished the same thing. I tried your suggestion and was confident I had done so correctly, as all tracks ( not busses) were highlighted in blue. My mixdown result was the same as before....containing only a stereo piano track. Do busses also have to be selected, and if so how do I do that ( I'm not new to Sonar...just want to make sure I'm doing it correctly) ? Thanks in advance for your helpful replies.

Chris, list your steps to the mixdown. Are you bouncing to tracks first? That is what I do so I can see what the mix is like before exporting. This is my process before exporting - 1. CTRL-A this selects all tracks in the project. Make sure you do not have tracks muted that you want to mixdown. 2. Bounce to track(s) - I choose a single mixdown track and not the separate buses. If the mix sounds good, then I export the audio.

I make sure to go to "Select None" then choose "Bounce to Track". I then select "Entire Mix" and make sure that all Fx, Sends, Busses, and all that is checked. I also use "Fast Bounce" on the first few times to make sure I got it the way I want.

Conley and Grem, Thanks for the quick replies...I'm using CTRL+A to select all tracks, then choosing File, Export. Then I'm choosing entire mix from the drop-down, 44.1 K, 16 bit , choosing location for file and name, de-selecting "fast bounce" (suggested by Cakewalk Tech) the Export. Wav tracks with efx have been bounced to tracks. Midi tracks going through soft synths are frozen. I have 5 or 6 busses to consolidate efx. Those busses are NOT highlighted in blue in the upper left hand corner like the individual tracks. I want to make sure I'm getting the mix through the busses as the efx in them are essential to the overall sound. Should I bounce all midi tracks to their own respective audio track instead of freezing the synth(s) they run through?

This is one of those issues where if I was looking over your shoulder I could probably solve it in 30 seconds...something isn't right. Are you still getting only a single track even when you choose Ctrl-A?

Craig, I wish you were standing over my shoulder...come on down to FL...I've got a room in the back. You're right...something is not right, and I think it's project specific. Yes, I tried it with CTRL+A and all tracks were highlighted in blue behind the track #. Got the same result as before, a stereo keys track. I'm going to try to bounce all to a stereo track within the project. I'll let you know what happens.

I had the same problem. Try what I suggest: Edit/Select None Track/Bounce to Track Under Destination choose - # New Trk Under Source choose your sound card/audio device Under Source Cat choose - Entire Mix then all other options you want. (Like I said before, I use Fast Bounce just to do it quickly and see if it comes out the way I want. After I get it the way I want I go back and uncheck "Fast Bounce") Now click OK and you mixed trk will now be there, fx's and all buses just like you hear it. Now when you get it just the way you want, export only that track! I do this all the time! Try it.

Craig, Conley, Grem, Tried to bounce the mix to a track within the project several ways: 1) CTRL+A, selected all buses and master as well, Tracks, Bounce to tracks, new track, entire mix, 44.1 @ 16 bits, Triangular Dithering, fast bounce (and slow bounce) This produced the same result as before: a stereo track of 2 keyboards through a TTS-1. 2) Grem's way: Edit, Select, None, Tracks, Bounce to tracks, new track, entire mix, Triangular Dithering, fast bounce. This produced a blank file . Thanks anyway Grem, and glad it worked for you. I also tried Exports following the above 2 methods...results were respectively the same. I've re-checked all my routing and it all seems correct. All tracks go to busses, expcept one or two. All busses go to the master. Master goes to the interface driver (UA-25). What's most puzzling at the moment is that the project plays fine, and sounds good, but I can't get it to bounce, or export successfully. I'm out of ideas at the moment, so all suggestions are welcome. Thanks for reading.

This is just too weird. If you had X3 we could share via Gobbler, but since it's X2, can you use Dropbox or something? I've used export and track bounce since the dawn of time and the only time I had issues was if I didn't select everything, or something was soloed.

Since all tracks/buses go to the master bus I always just export the master bus, never had a problem doing it this way.

Craig and Shambler, Phil Slopak @ Cakewalk Tech Support and I have been going back and forth on this for a while, and he suggested I upload it to Cakewalk, so I just did that and emailed Phil to let him know it's there. Shambler, I will try it your way and report back...thanks for reading and for your suggestion.

chrisbates After export, the project only plays the track that mixed down, and I have to close it without saving and re-open it to get it to play normally. This is the key indication that something else besides your selections and mixdown options is going on. But I can't imagine what that might be. Sounds like some sort of project corruption, given that soft synths are frozen. Did the Cakewalk tech suggest non-fast bounce after you had already reported this problem? Because I would not recommend that in general. Try disabling 64-bit double precision engine, as there are some known problems with it in X3c. Other than that, possibly some errant plugin is causing trouble. Try saving a copy of the project with half the tracks removed, and keep alternating and removing another half of the tracks until the project bounces correctly. That might identify the culprit. Alternatively, you can load the project in Safe mode, and only load half the plugins each time (focusing on 3rd-party, non-bundled stuff), then half of the problematic half, etc.

Vostro, I think you're right...I smell either corruption or a bad plugin that doesn't like to work in the project. I am using some 32 bit plugins and my version of X2 is 64 bit, but they work during playback, so why wouldn't they work during mixdown or export. I did try to export just from the master, but that option was not available and I tried the main outs, but same result. My busses are show meter action on export, but my master is not. Is this normal? I think you're suggested method of eliminating to identify the problem is probably the only viable method remaining, will try that next ...thanks for reading the post and the suggestion.

Try to get rid of the 32-bit plugins. I had a X3c project, where the audio channels of BFD2 were completely f'ed up (producing spontaneous pops etc.), whenever a random synth on another track had been "frozen" to audio. Very stange behaviour, and it is difficult to imagine how this could even interfere, but nevertheless - it happened, and it was caused by 32-bit effect plugins, that normally work perfectly in 64-bit Sonar. It was so weird that I did not even bother to contact support; I simply decided to sort out my last 32-bit effects. I'd say that "bridging" while working well most of the time, means actually asking for unpredictable problems which are also very hard to track down (as there is no obvious connection). Georg

I'm thinking something like Craig. Something has got to be Solo'd or something is not right. Both way you tried should work unless you have a track solo'd, maybe a SS solo'd?

It's not uncommon for plugins to have trouble with offline bounce which is probably why Cakewalk Tech recommend trying real-time bounce. If you're running a very small buffer, like 2ms or less, try going back to fast bounce and using a larger buffer size; If that works, you can increase bouncebuffsizemsec=0 in AUD.INI to something higher. Zero means SONAR defaults to using your real-time buffer size for offline bouncing. Some plugs have trouble doing a fast bounce with a small buffer. I found this when Rapture had a problem bouncing at anything less than 4ms. I've had bouncebuffsizemsec set to 20 through several versions now.

PROBLEM SOLVED
Craig, Jack, George, Brundlefly, George, Shambler, and all.
Am deliriously happy to report the problem has been SOLVED!
I started breaking down the project, and simplifying whenever possible. I deleted redundant tracks, unused takes, muted tracks, whatever.
Bounced the synth tracks to audio, and then deleted the synth tracks . Eliminated 32 bit plugs if I had a 64 bit one that served the purpose.
I noticed one audio guitar track that must've been corrupted, 'cause when I muted it, it muted everything, even though the mute button only changed color in that track! Releasing the mute button on that trick caused a big CLICK like the audio was being plugged in. So I bounced that to another track, and deleted the original. Problem solved.
Also I ran all tracks to a sub bus for reverb, and I discovered a way louder and cleaner mix by bypassing the sub buss and routing everything directly to the master. Digitally, I don't know why that's so.
I have no trouble exporting now, and get a consistent quality every time, (as long as hit CTRL+A prior to export) so I'm just tweaking away, having a great time.
To all those who read and responded, THANK YOU! I couldn't have been lead to the answer without the help and encouragement of those who are on this forum.
