Likey:  most things...kinda...comparatively...sort of...maybe...probably
No Likey:  touch screen thingy

In depth review:  Unfortunately, no.

Reads more like puff piece review in Electronic Musician circa 2000:  Unfortunately, yes.

With regards to the touchscreen no-likey, is it the general theory of touch or the specific implementation or what?

Using a tablet, touch is cool.  On a laptop, I think it is harder to reach up and mess with the screen than just to continue using the mouse and keyboard.

While I have not tried Sonar on a laptop, I would think it would be very hard to get your touch where you wanted it with such a dense layout on a small laptop screen.

I thought the review was good.  I disagree with the cluttered layout and suggestion for multiple monitors.  I've found X1 and X2 make it a breeze to work with one monitor instead of multiples.  I've ditched my second monitor and haven't missed it at all.

Interesting. CW said they had single monitors in mind when they came up with Skylight and at the same time made X1/X2 better at using dual monitors.

Just trying to cover the bases...

PS... I'm not giving up my second monitor any time soon though!  But I'll also take a free touchscreen if anyone is offering.

In one of our labs we have 2x32" monitors. One is on a traditional stand and the other is where a control surface would go. Then we have the keyboard below that. It's pretty snazzy.

Hey Seth, I have the Planar 27" used in the X2 promo for touch and also have other large monitors I could add to the system, but my issue is which windows to have where (or which screenset to have).  In other words, do you have the console mode permanently on the touchscreen monitor and trackview on the non-touch (assuming you use those two view the most)?

If not, how do you set it up?  I'm very curious.  I love the touch!  Can you say if CW will be expanding touch capabilities at all?

    Thanks

    Stuff.

I have Dual 27" monitors on three of my computers, Home Office, Electronics Lab, and Music Room (PlayPen). To me, once you work with dual monitors, there is no going back! Personal preferences allowed...

Yup, dual 24" here.   I don't use second monitor for everything, but the ability to stretch out or spread out (depending on the situation) is too good to pass up IMHO.

Although I think that the X series (particularly screensets) has vastly improved using sonar on a single monitor, I have two 23 inch monitors here, and would not like to go back.

I tend to have the Sonar screen spread over both of them, side by side,  like one big monitor, and just love the added "room".

Thank you for citing a year when I wasn't involved with the magazine

I've thought a lot about reviews over the years. I finally came to the conclusion that no one should care whether I like something or not, because people have such vastly different needs. So my goal was to describe something with sufficient accuracy that the readers could decide whether it was something that would interest them or not. If some people read a review and thought it was positive while others thought it was negative, I figured that meant I did my job properly.

My favorite example was when I reviewed Native Instruments' Kore. One reader wrote to say that he went out and bought Kore based on the positive review, and it was the best investment he'd made in years. Another reader wanted to know if Native Instruments canceled their advertising after reading such a negative review. As to Native Instruments, they just said "Finally someone actually explained what it does."

Frankly, I just don't think it's possible to review a piece of software as deep as Sonar in a way that covers how well it works for the 4,597 ways it can be used. More and more, I think all a software review can really do is help the reader decide whether it would be worth their time to download a trial version and check it out.

I'm just throwing something out here but IIRC a number of years ago some car magazines did what they termed a real road test that involved them driving a specific model car for a number of weeks/months...one even did one lasting a couple of seasons.

I'm wondering if one could throw something like that here? Almost like a blog if it were...

I like your indepth over time reviews very much CraigA. The octacapture one is a good example of what I mean and is part of what motivated me to get a studio capture.

Funny thing is that on the Cakewalk forum if someone writes a moderately favorable review of Sonar they will maybe be slammed as a fanboy :)
