X2 - Piano Roll - Cannot select notes
For some reason, I cannot select notes in piano roll. The right-click "lasso" in smart tool does not work, and neither does left click in select mode.
Track View selection works, and when I select a range of notes via Track View, I can see them hilighted in the piano roll. But when I try to select them in the piano roll, nothing gets highlighted.
If I click on a piano key on the left, notes on that key gets selected, and if I highlight a range in the piano roll's timeline, the appropriate notes gets select. I just can do any direct selection of notes themselves.
Restarting Sonar does not help.
Is anyone else having this problem? Is there a fix?

Have you accidently disabled editing for the track in the prv track list? Although you should get a warning if that is the case.

Interesting... I can add notes, but I cannot select note properties, and I cannot draw velocities...
And when I add notes, it adds them to a new clip, not the existing clip.
And if I double-click on a different clip, I can select and change notes just fine...
So it seems like the clip I've been trying to edit is "locked", or there is an invisible clip sitting on top of it.
...and guess what, if I then click on the "locked" clip, it's no longer locked, and I can edit it.
I then exit Sonar, and can repeat it. At first, the clip is uneditable. If I then select a different clip, and then come back to the first clip, it's editable again.
Very odd!

Something similar happened to me when I first got X2. The only way to get the clip functioning again was to right click on it and tell it to bounce to clip.

Sounds like you may have come across a bug there, can you replicate it at all?

Yes, if I open my project, it starts with the piano roll up, but I cannot select (or edit) any notes in that piano roll. I then have to double-click on a different clip, and then select the original clip, and then it works. It's a very short test project. Do you want me to email it to you so that you can see if it's broken for you? Or should I just send it to Cakewalk? (Though I suppose they are super-busy fixing other bugs right now)

I'd report it as a bug if I were you especially if you can repeat it consistently. I'm more than happy to look at it as well if you want though. Unfortunately fixing it will be beyond me though.

I was able to simplify my project (strip out all synths and buses and extraneous tracks). Here's a link: http://tripalot.com/issue...no-roll-simplified.cwp When the project opens, you should see 1 track and (hopefully) the piano roll open showing two sets of notes: "A" and "B". You can then try to select some of these notes via either of the following 2 methods: 1) smart tool - right click drag around them 2) select tool - left click drag around them For me, both methods work on the "A" notes, but not the "B" notes, despite them being in the same track. Do you get the same behavior?

I do. I can't edit or select them either. I notice that they (B) are on a different channel to A but that shouldn't make them unselectable AFAIK. Stranger still I can't change the channel in the event list either. I'll have a deeper look and see what I can come up with but it looks like a bug to me.

Thanks swamptooth, that fixes the problem but it must be a bug or at the very least unexpected behaviour. If notes are visible in the PRV they should be editable regardless of what the default clip editor is set to, shouldn't they?

Nope, because step sequencer is a separate interface. You would have to bounce the clip down and then convert it to a step sequencer clip. SS has parameters like flam amount and swing time that are included in clips that aren't a part of standard midi clips.

Interesting...
This project was for testing drum-related features in X2. I first recorded both test clips via MIDI, and then started experimenting with drum maps and the step sequencer. I guess I forgot to set the default (double-click) editor for the second clip back to piano roll.
I'm relieved that there is a workaround. However, it seems really strange that the choice of default editor has the odd side effect of preventing edits in the other editors (at least the piano roll).
I think this is a bug rather than a desired feature, because there doesn't seem to be any advantage in preventing edits in editor A if editor B is the default editor. That would be like preventing edits in the Event List if the Piano Roll is the default editor, and Sonar has never worked that way.

the thing with the step sequencer though is that it IS its own default editor because it saves so much unique metadata about the midi tracks. this is how step sequencer data has worked forever afaik. you've never been able to edit notes in a step sequencer clip via the piano roll. try this... open x1 or 8.5.3 and make a new step sequencer clip. loop it 5 or 6 times. then open the track in piano roll. all you will see in prv is the first series of notes but none of the loops and none of them are able to be edited.

I understand that and I'm now beginning to doubt my sanity because when I first opened the project, I could have sworn it was all one MIDI clip. Since re opening I can now see two clips one MIDI and one SS which explains it completely but I'm sure there was only one MIDI clip before hence my confusion. Either that or I was so zoomed in on it I could only see one. @tripecac - was there only one clip or did I dream that part?

i'm kinda bummed that they took the step sequencer icon off the top left of step sequencer clips. now i have no idea if they are or not. :/

I think what happened to me is I clicked on the 'B' notes in the PRV shifting the now time to the B clip and drawing a note at the same time. As my TV is fairly zoomed in the now time had shifted to that clip so I assumed* they were all in one clip. That's why I never picked up on the step sequencer clip. It is a little harder to tell now as although the clip edges are rounded there is no other indication that it is a SS clip and you are correct it has always been that you can't edit SS data in the PRV. Just previously it was a little easier to tell it was SS data. Oh well, live and learn... *bad idea - never assume always check

Okay I lied..... The indicator in the top right hand corner of a SS clip is slightly different to a regular MIDI clip, just not as obvious as the older indicator.
