X2 Training Videos: SWA, Groove3
Has anybody viewed the X2 training videos from both SWA ("Complete Sonar X2") and Groove3 ("Sonar X2 Explained")? Care to offer an opinion on which one you preferred? Right now, the biggest difference I am seeing is a $15 price difference, which is not an issue to me if the content/quality justifies it. Thanks.

Hey Ken... I have both videos. I just got done watching Karl's set from SWA. Think of his not as a tutorial based, rather his style is more reference. There is a LOT of material to cover and he moves right along. It's really good, but it moves fast and covers a lot of territory. From what I recall on the one from Groove 3, it was not AS in depth but moved at a slower pace and felt a bit more tutorial oriented.

I consider all this "long not so much saying videos" useless. It is better to spend time working in software than watching about its function in some video. 90% of those videos doesnt saying anything important, if you dont know how some functions work, try google it or use help file it is much faster and we all know time is money.

BluerecordingStudios I disagree. Those videos have helped me get up and running. I knew absolutely nothing about recording and mixing, Having the ability to watch these videos have cut countless hours of hunting and pecking for odds and ends on the internet and or countless hours of trial and error. While they may seem useless to you, they are a goldmine for others.

The advantage of the videos like Karl's is that they give a very good overview of what is available even if you won't be using most of it in the near future. There'd be no way of figuring that out by googling, and you'd lose quite a bit of hair just poking around in X2. I'm positive that someone who's watched such a video will end up using more of X2 than someone who hasn't. Unless of course you're a long time Sonar user, which isn't my case.

I agree that videos can greatly reduce the learning curve. Scott's Sonar Power books do the same. If your a visual person the videos are great way to go. If you like reading and having a reference to pick up when you need it, Scott's Sonar Power books are the way to go. I like checking out the videos but find it a p.i.t.a. when I need a quick reference or refresher on something. There's nothing wrong with having both. Your mileage may vary. P.S. Scott, out with X2 Power already!!! Rocky

+1 to Scott's Sonar Power books. X1 Power lives next to my DAW along with Roey Izhaki and Mike Senior's books on mixing. X2 Power will join them one day, no doubt. +1 for all of Karls Videos. +1 also for Eli's Groove 3 videos - excellent.

I could not disagree more. As a matter of fact, I am glad I purchased both Grove 3 and SWA videos! First and foremost you will learn things that you will not discover by trial and error. Both videos have a different teaching style. and they come with very experienced teachers. The videos are more than this thing does this or this thing does that. They taught me tips and tricks that save time and money. The knowledge in the videos is worth the investment. I purchased older versions of Scott's books and the power series that he puts out is a great asset as well. I need to pick up his current Sonar Power book for X2. Trust me, These resources will teach you things you will not learn on your own through trial and error.

I watch the videos, read the books and play with the software. Sometimes it doesn't help. :-) Sometimes it does. FBB's SWA tutorial is good. I like to watch the videos at high speed and skip to the chapters I care about. I use the VLC Media player to watch. Then I can select chapters by name and watch at whatever speed I like. I think I've bought all the videos and they all have something to offer. I really like X2 Advanced and another earlier X2 one by Craig Anderton. Lots of the stuff in there is also here... http://www.soundonsound.com/search?page=1&Keyword=sonar%20notes but I loved his videos just because of the ideas he batted around. A lot was above my head but still so cool. FBB's SWA (carl) was at a slower pace but still cool as it focused on the fx. The books are awesome... Sonar Power. I have 3... and another Sonar for Guitarists book. All cool. And mastering by ?? Katz. That's a good one too.
StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen. I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

I can only echo what has already been said. I have seen both videos and as is often said "a picture is worth a thousand words" For me, as a newbie to recording and Sonar in particular, I found both videos very helpful in their own ways. I am very much a 'show me how to do that' sort of person, so the videos have have been both informative and instructional. The SWA is very much informative as well as showing how things are done, and it comes with a complete time sheet of all the various chapters on the video (which I believe is about 9 hours long?) The Groove 3 Video is more of an instructional video and is presented in small 'bite sized' pieces which you can view and then go off and try it for yourself. Both videos cover all the basics and the more in depth issues. Neither Video is a 'quick reference' tool though. For that I will turn to Scott's X2 Power book (when I get it!!) Gary

I have the SWA videos and love them. He does move fast, but we all know what Pause is for. His are like a movie that is very in-depth and you might need to watch it a few times to get all the nuances. I have X1's Groove 3, and like those as well. I don't believe you can go wrong with either set. If it means anything the SWA videos are very well done, considering it was from a forum user here. I think that he put a lot of really hard work (for weeks or even months) into these videos and deserves a great response from all that tedius work. Plus, I love his accent as well. It's very optimistic, even with challenges of the software. Puts you in a better mood. I have not seen the Groove 3 X2 videos, but the guy who did X1 has a very ice-cream ish kind of voice I thought was easy to listen to as well.

I'm in accord with the folks that say these resources are extremely useful and pay you back many times over for the time and money you put in to them. They are all great in their own ways, and they reinforce each other with enabling you to actually use Sonar which is an incredibly powerful tool. So my vote is you get them all. That said, if I had to pick just one I'd go with Groove3. But I wouldn't go with just one, I recommend them all since each of them have rewarded me so much in gaining the skills to become good at the Sonar universe of stuff.
Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Good replies, all. For starters I decided to go with the Groove3. I have their Sonar 8.5 video and liked the chapter presentations. I'll look into Scott's book also when it is available. I have one of Scott's previous Sonar books. I do like video presentations for the initial attack at a sophisticated software package line X2. Watch on one monitor and follow along with X2 on the second monitor.

LordElpus : "The SWA is very much informative as well as showing how things are done, and it comes with a complete time sheet of all the various chapters on the video (which I believe is about 9 hours long?) " Just a reminder that the SWA video has been reformatted into chapters. You can get the new one free from the store if you bought it. The advantage of the single, long video is that you watch things you might not if you pick and choose.

Here I am, late to the party as always. Thanks for all the recommendations. I think many things can be said about about my SWA video, accent, delivery, etc. etc. but "long not so much saying videos" is certainly not one of them. The "Complete" part of the title really is that and besides covering the more obvious and usual parts of the program covers some of the more obscure topics I've not seen covered in videos before such as how to write drum maps and instrument files. For anyone who wants to see my "style" (or lack of ) and how a topic is covered can view a chapter on the matrix on my youtube page.
