X2 and Kirnu Cream - anyone?
I'm just starting to use the software sequencer Kirnu Cream inside of Sonar X2. I'm getting really tangled with the Input echoes on/off/through. If I have one track running a sequence, then I add another soft synth track and play something, its also changing the notes of the original soft synth track (as all the Input echoes are on) - if I take the input echo of the orignial soft synth track OFF, I can't hear it play back ... Hum - anyone using this or similar? What might I be doing wrong?

I've got the Kirnu Cream demo but not tried using it yet. I think I understand the problem though...what about as well as using Input Echo, use MIDI channels as well to filter which track your playing goes to? You probably have both tracks currently set to OMNI. Try setting your keyboard and the MIDI track you want to hear your playing on to the same MIDI channel and change the track that's running the sequence to a different channel.

aha - good point, I am using OMNI on both ... I'll check that when I'm back at my studio and see ... thanks for the tip.

Hmmm, I did get it to work. But it seems inconsistent. Sometimes I get no sound at all for no conceivable reason. Then adding a second instance of Cream causes Sonar to crash (tested 3 times). Frustrating - anyone with any similar experience?

I believe that is to be expected, at this time SONAR can only handle one plug-in instance producing MIDI output.

I apologize for the slight derail of this thread, but I'm really impressed with what Kirnu Cream can do (just watched a video). I've used Kirnu Arp in the past and have forgotten about it, but this seems like a very useful & creative tool. What are your impressions of Kirnu C.?

it's the most sophisticated arp out there :) there's a bit of a learning curve but it's super flexible, responsive developer, cheap as chips, and so on :) try the demo of course ;)

My impressions of Kirnu Cream are not helped by the fact that a) you can only use one instance at a time in Sonar (why ?????) and b) its not apparently very stable within Sonar even with one instance Its a pity since it really seemed to be a tool I could use ... hmmm, is there a way around this?

Fixed in X3b - although I haven't actually tested that out yet. Cheers - Cliff

I can load multiple instances of the Cream plugin (demo version) into audio tracks' FX bins and route their outputs to the inputs of MIDI tracks. I've not got it 'up and running' yet 'cos I'm still learning how to drive the plugin.

Not stable (for me anyway), I was getting 2x instances of Kirnu Cream working and Sonar X3b crashed. Fault report sent to Cakewalk. Plugins-wise, the project had two instances of True Piano, two instances of Kirnu Cream, nothing else. [edit]
As an aside, the routing is a real PITA. I don't understand why Cream isn't classified as a MIDI FX plugin, rather than a soft synth. It doesn't make sounds (does it?), it just receives and sends MIDI as far as I understand it so the MIDI FX bin would seem to be the logical place for it to live. That'd make the routing and input echoing set-up more straightforward to arrange.

I've just tried it again with a new project and this time it's running and seems stable with 2x instances of Cream. Apologies; I'd forgotten that in the previous test, there was a track from the project I used as a starting point which has some EQ plugins which occasionally do crash Sonar, so it might have been them that was causing the problem. [edit] OK, this project just crashed as well when using > 1 instance of Cream in Sonar X3b. This time, definitely no other plugins other than a couple of true piano instances used for the output.

Out of curiosity and to check out X3b with Cream. The following worked for me: first instance Cream-1: sending on 3 Cream-1 -tracks midi 1 to 3 to 3 different instruments receiving midi 1 to 3 from Cream-1 respectively. second instance Cream-2: sending on Cream-2-track 1 midi 1 to one instrument receiving midi 1 from Cream-2 The Cream instances have been generated as "simple instruments tracks" with "midi output" enabled. But I send the audio output not to the master but to "none". After seconds running those tracks I had a crash of Sonar. But after restart and reload of the project, everything went fine.

Thanks guys for checking this out. Seems the results are inconsistant. Glad to know that it wasn't just me ... @ston : did you get those issue with inpout echo that got -- ie, when running the track with a Cream arp, and then adding another track (withoutarp) on top (eg, a chord) - playing that new track also affects the original Cream track (because its input echo was on)? I tried your suggestions re the MIDI channels but never got it to work - maybe I didn't do it right ...

@soundraider --- so 1 instance of Cream can run several different soft synths on different tracks, when the Midi routing is correct? If that is so, then I think my issue of Sonar crashing with 2 instances of Cream could be solved?

Yes - we have 4 Cream-Tracks. To get the tracks to different midi channels you can set the midi-out of each track separately in the top header area. We have also the option to set different midi-input channels per track, but I never checked this out. Make sure, that the receiving instrument is listening to the correct Cream-output channel. It might be necessary to set not only the Sonar Track to this channel but the instrument also. I had an issue with Kontakt until each Kontakt-Instrument was set listening to the corresponding Cream-output channel. Have Fun ;)

but when you record on multiple midi tracks, all the cream outputs overlap. simple test: insert cream instance one, with an arp pattern and notes to drive it insert cream instance two, with a different arp pattern and notes to drive it insert dimension pro and set its midi track to receive from cream instance 1 on channel 1 insert rapture and set its midi track to receive from cream instance 2 on channel 1 arm both the dp and rapture midi tracks to record and start recording both recorded midi tracks are the same, as all the notes overlap from both instances of cream now, set dp to record on cream instance 1 channel 12 set rapture to record on cream instance 2 channel 10 hit record you should get nothing, but again midi data is recorded on both channels.

I was thinking this was a Sonar issue, not a Cream issue. But if there is something Arto can do from his side that would be great.

@ swamptooth I had this issue also - for a time - all the instruments playing some mix of all Cream-outputs. Only to recap ... software here is Sonar X3b and Cream 1.0.8. First time I tested Cream with multi-tracks, I was assuming that setting the Sonar-Track correctly is all what is required, but this was not true. Each instrument needs to listen to it's dedicated midi-channel too. I tested this with some Kontakt instances. Each instrument in Kontakt had to listen to the correct midi-channel too, otherwise I had a dead line or a kind of mix. This might indeed point to a Sonar issue. But may be, it's also how Cream is used, what makes a difference. I had noted some chords in the midi-track of the Cream instance to use them as the baseline for the Cream-arpreggions. Cream generated three different arpreggios from this baseline chords on three Cream-Tracks and those were sent to three Kontakt instances. There was no overlapping or mixing. If it's an Sonar X2 issue, have you checked out the workaround to record Cream-track/Sonar-track wise and mute all the others?

I didn't quite get that far with it tbh, I was allowing the input (i.e. from my MIDI k/b) to go to both instances of Cream which were playing different patterns. Then the crash occurred.
