X2 and Windows Vista
I know Cakewalk does not officially support the Vista OS for X2. Just wondering if anyone here has been successfully using X2 with Vista? I know there had been a few posts regarding the topic in the X2 pre-release days - however I have not seen any further discussions since the release. The sense I got from the pre-release discussions was that the program would be stable with a decent enough computer running at least Vista Home Premium with SP2. Any experiences to report? Thanks!

I have with Vista 64 bit. For me its been very solid. It is not yet as solid as X1Ex D. But very close. I figure when a full patch comes out the last bits will be cleared up. Its very usable.

Quite a few people have been having success running X2 on Vista but support won't be able to help you (or at least not as much). I also read that the big problem with Vista is gonna come when they patch X2 to deal with Win8 and it's touchscreen capabilities and I don't think even the Bakers know what's gonna happen at that point because Win 8 is still a completely new animal. I love Win 7 BTW. It's worth the upgrade to 7. I think 8 is gonna flop. Cheers.

I didn't want to mention John by name but he is one of the main smart dudes who has been running X2 successfully with Vista... and he's all smart and stuff.

It's been stated by Cakewalk that X2 will not run on anything prior to Windows 7 after you install the first official patch. So it's time to upgrade to at least Windows 7 gfeel. Or, wait and see if that's true. Sometimes they say one thing, but another ends up happening. I was always under the impression that Vista and Windows 7 were identical after you installed a ton of patches in Vista ... but I must be wrong.

I did try Win 8 and although it is not ready yet it did show a great deal of promise with much better core load distribution.

When I was building the system I was gonna snag Win 7 Ultimate (because Ultimate is better... right?) but then realized it would only be supported by MS until 2015 whereas Home and Pro were supported up until 2018. I went with Pro (it's got the XP mode which I wanted) and I feel pretty secure with my OS. I don't think we even know how long MS will support 8 yet and to me that's just not a gamble I want to take. I've blathered on about this frequently here but it's true. I'm not a betting man. ;-)

That is a very strong statement about what it will run on. If you could refer me to where CW has stated that I would be very interested. I think what Bub is referring to only applies to XP. In some thread, somewhere, Noel specifically stated that the DLLs in Win8 are not backwards compatible with XP, so chances are that the X2 patch won't even install on XP. But with Vista I think the main drawback is the lack of touchscreen features because of those same Win8 DLL changes. But I don't recall Noel ever saying that the X2 patch(es) won't install on Vista.

Noel said once they implement Multi-touch support, there is a "possibility Vista will load X2". That means they don't expect it to ... he also said there has been no testing on Vista and there will be no support for Vista. LINK TO NOEL'S POST A simple search leads you right to the post ... but no, he'd rather be an ass about it, which is why he remains blocked.

Noel Brothwick, "there is a possibility that Vista will still load X2 (no official testing or support though)" Guys ... it's time to let go of Vista ... just like I had to let go of DOS 6.22 and then Windows XP SP3. Good luck with that Keni.

do not buy x2 thinking you will run it on windows vista for much longer. they say that for a reason. if you understand a little behind the engine of windows xp,vista and 7 and 8 you would realize this,xp and vista are almost the same os besides a new skin and improvmenets to graphics. windows 7 is a whole new os-as windows 8 is as well but is somewhat like 7.once a patch is released for x2,im guessing its going to be for windows 8 support. once that is done, its all over except the crying.

Bub Noel Brothwick, "there is a possibility that Vista will still load X2 (no official testing or support though)" Guys ... it's time to let go of Vista ... just like I had to let go of DOS 6.22 and then Windows XP SP3. Good luck with that Keni. Below is the full text from Noel's post. "As of today X2 loads and works fine in Vista which is similar to Win7 in many ways. However once we do Win8 support the multitouch features will only work on Win8 and Win7. Microsoft actually blocks that stuff out on Vista. I'm not certain how this will pan out myself until we finish the work but there is a possibility that Vista will still load X2 (no official testing or support though)." I am not sure how you can get Vista will not run X2 from the above quote. As for the upcoming Windows 8 patch I read it as Noel is not sure that Vista wont run it. Hence the word "possibility". None the less I do advise in my case to upgrade the OS to Win 8. The OP asked simply is anybody running Vista and X2. I answered that I was. Others have done the same. I'm not sure why you have such a hostile attitude towards me but it does not serve you well. Nor does your opinion of me take away from the facts that are being clearly stated here. Its odd to offer an opinion about postings your are not reading. From Charlie; if you understand a little behind the engine of windows xp,vista and 7 and 8 you would realize this,xp and vista are almost the same os besides a new skin and improvmenets to graphics. To Charlie actually Vista and Windows 7 have a lot in common. It is a fact that it is XP that is not compatible with Vista. Vista and XP have very little in common. But in the end the merits of any OS is not important in this thread. What is important is whether a Vista user can run Sonar X2.

Just guessing that he replied to me because I have him blocked ... and quite frankly could care less what he says ... I'm just replying for the humor value to see if I nailed it ... I'd be willing to bet my DAW that he twisted what Noel said in to something like 'Vista will work', even though Noel made it crystal clear Vista is not supported and after the Windows 8 multitouch patch there is only a "possibility" it will run, which means, there is a greater likely hood it will not ... that's why Noel said, "no official testing or support" ..... Just guessing, but I'd be willing to bet my DAW that's how he twisted it ... Go ahead and run X2 on Vista even though Cakewalks CTO said it is not supported or tested and more than likely won't run after the first official patch. I could care less how he struggles with his system ... it could only run 3 tracks and crash every 30 seconds and he'd still say Sonar is the best DAW ever made ... so it's impossible to be reasonable and talk fact with someone like that ... hence the blocking ... I'm just guessing here at his reply ... did I nail it? Done here ...

Why so much drama? Bottom line is Vista works for now - and users should change in the future. I'm using/pushing X2 on Vista 64 everyday. Purrs like a kitten. Dreading the upgrade - but the clock is ticking. So I'm bracing for the change. Does anyone know if it's okay to upgrade over top of Vista or is that definitely the wrong thing to do?

john, what fact are we talking about here? the fact that most drivers and software worked for widows xp and vista but not win 7? if what your saying was true then id guess sonar X2 would still be supporting vista(if it was more like win 7 and not xp,then why the end of support?) you and i could throw stones back and forth all day long here but id rather wait for a professional to answer this question. a quick question to you though...why havent you upgraded to win 7? your answer may in fact provide proof of what im saying...lol.

Thanks to all for the responses. I just downloaded X2 and will install on both laptop running Win7 and desktop running Vista 64. My approach is simply this - if there comes a time when X2 updates/patches require an upgrade of my desktop OS to Win 7/Win 8 - I will. Thanks again!

I can't recall anyone posting that they installed a new OS over an older one without issue in recent years. I do recall posts from the past reporting problems when they did overwrite the old with the new. This may have been in the era of Win 2000 or ME to XP though. I think Scott offers some excellent advice. I have a setup that is meant to be upgraded easily. I use removable drives in driver drawers for replacing the system drive. I also have all of my data on other drives. Very little is on the system drive. Its not hard to copy important data to another HD even if it is only temporary. Use a USB drive if you need to to do this. I will still recommend whenever its feasible to install your new OS on a clean, formatted HD. I hope this is helpful.
