X2 demo song won't play.

My interface is set to 48 and the demo song is 44.1. Could this be the problem?  I would really like to hear this.

    Well change the Sample Rate!!

You should also be able to do File > Import > Audio and Sonar will automatically convert it for you, but this would only apply for a single track, not a whole project

    Sorry to Hijack this thread...

Jonesey.... is that really a screen cap from your system? Your Focusrite USB card latency is set to 1.0 msecs??? 45 samples??  I have a new Focusrite 2i2 and can't get under 10 msecs... what am I doing wrong? I mean, 10's ok, but...

My sound card is the Focusrite 2i2.  The M-Audio Keystation is my keyboard/controller. I went on to my machine and found that, actually, my latency is set to 4.0 msec not 10.0... sorry.

    Under Mixing Latency

Asio reported latency... at a sample rate of 44.1

Buffer Size: 4.0 msec (177 samples)
    Input: 11.2 msec (492 samples)
    Output: 15.2 msec (669 samples)
Total Round trip as 26.3 msec or 1161 samples

This is ok for me, but when I tried to go lower, I got rice krispies...

Barczar... again, sorry for hijacking your thread. Did Bristol Jonseys' suggestion help you?

    Hi Rob.

That's just my buffer latency - the true RTL is in the ASIO panel below and reports 7.9msec

    Re:X2 demo song won't play. 2012/10/13 06:41:15 (permalink)
I did some digging in Google for your interface and found some things to check.

    1.  Please go to device manager and look at the properties for your Focusrite interface.  I want to know PRECISELY what it is using for drivers.  Please respond with that info.  Apparently, Windows may install ITS drivers for this, which are useless.  Just something to rule out quickly.  If the right drivers aren't installed, just manually install the correct ones for your interface.  The Focusrite doc online says there is a Windows driver update that was released on 02/02/2012.

    2.  For my Presonus Audiobox 1818VSL interface, it most DEFINITELY has to have matching sample rates between the interface and Sonar, or no sound comes out.  I would imagine this may be the issue for you.

    3.  Your interface may be built for USB 1.1 ports (the doc online says it is for USB 1.1, but their driver text indicates it is for USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 devices, so I don't really know).  Be careful what you are plugging it in to on your computer.  My Presonus interface FREAKED when I plugged it into a USB 3.0 port.  There are also additional factors when using Intel i3, i5, or i7 chips.  Here is some documentation from the Focusrite systems requirements page on the web:

Connectivity of USB 1.1 devices on non-root hubs
We have found some problems with USB 1.1 devices attached to non-root USB hubs on Windows 7. The cause appears to be a problem in the way Windows handles non-root USB hubs.

Some of the symptoms of this problem are listed below:
    - Interface fails to stream audio at low buffer sizes (below 3ms).
    - Device fails to connect when other USB 1.1 devices are in use and connected to the same non-root hub.
    - It's not possible to use other USB 1.1 devices when the 6 USB is connected
    - Device shows in device manager (under 'Sound, Video and Game Controllers') but doesn't appear in Windows' sound preferences.
    - Streaming of Windows sounds is possible but the Focusrite USB ASIO driver gives an error message when selected.

Whether a device is connected directly to a USB root hub or Generic USB hub can be found in the Device Manager, found in the Control Panel. You should then choose the option 'Devices by connection' in the 'View' menu.

If it is correctly connected to a USB root hub it will appear like this:

If it is incorrectly connected to a generic USB hub it will appear like this:

The problem is particularly prevalent on the new Intel i-series chipsets (Core i3, i5 and i7), both in desktop and notebook format, as these chipsets do not provide a way to connect directly to the root hub.

The workaround is to attach a new USB root hub and connect the device to that instead.

Desktop users can add a PCI or PCIe USB card, which will work as long as the card does not have an internal, non-root hub.

    4.  I also found online postings of folks having generic Windows trouble where the 'unable to open recording device' message appears.  You might want to just cruise through some Google results searching for that message text, and see if any of that may apply.

I don't for the moment know what else to suggest.

Please respond after reviewing the above and seeing if anything there rings a bell (even if you can't hear the bell ringing because no sound comes out of the interface - sorry, couldn't resist that).

Hey Robert. Tried to get back to you sooner, but I was at work for twelve hours and for some reason I can't post to the forum from work anymore.  I followed your instructions and it is off the correct usb hub.

The error message reads:     Unable to open audio record device. The device may not support the current projects audio format or may be in use.

Thanks for the suggestions and the help.

Hey - just for grins, go to Preferences>Audio>Playback and Recording, and tell me if the box is checked that says: Share Drivers With Other Programs.

If it is not checked, try checking it, then give it a try and see if that has any bearing on your problem.

Oh - Also, make SURE your sampling rates are both set to the same value - try 44.1 for now.

Please go check exactly what the sampling rate is for your interface, AND tell me exactly what Sonar has the sampling rate set to.

Everything I read seems to point to a rate mismatch

Bob, I did everything you said.  I checked the box "Share drivers with other programs".  I matched the sample rate also. But it's a no go. Same error message. Really strange. I even tried to import it thinking it would convert the sample rate. That didn't work either.

Yeah, I was just grasping at straws there.

Do you have multiple interfaces or sound cards?

When I was helping someone else with their interface yesterday, we cut Sonar out of the loop, and it helped us isolate his problem to something with the drivers on his device.

That in mind - let's do that here.  What happens when you play a song through the Windows Media Player?  I am thinking if it also crackles on you that the issue is happening regardless of Sonar, and we could then focus on the interface itself.  Can you play something in WMP and post back?

I continued looking - got to be something.

Do you have your computer set to optimize for background services?  This is a setting you can review/change in Control Panel>System>Advanced System Settings>Performance (hit Settings button under Performance)>Advanced.  The default is to set for programs, change that to Background Services.

What about interference from antivirus programs?  I had problems in the past with various antivirus programs being poorly written (Norton and Macafee come to mind).  I use Avast, and it allows me to temporarily disable it (I have to uncheck the self-defense option in trouble shooting or it won't let me).  Avast gives me the option for it to start back up on reboot, and I just avoid the Internet anytime I have it disabled.

Have you looked through the Black Viper WIndows 7 optimizations for Windows Services?  I know on my system there are a whole bunch of them that I ended up turning off.  Everything the CPU is doing contributes to latency.  These optimizations can be reviewed at: http://www.blackviper.com/service-configurations/black-vipers-windows-7-service-pack-1-service-configurations/

Good point - what happens when you play other things?

A simple audio track with an imported MP3?

Just playing something in Windows Media Player outside of Sonar?

A simple instrument track playing some piano sound on the TTS-1?

    Love to know,

Hey Guys!  Well I don't have multiple sound cards. Everything goes through the Focusrite. And I did all of the optimizations including background services. I have no problem playing anything. Just this demo. I opened windows media player and was even able to play the single files. I'm out of things to try.

Good call, Rajah - I think that would be telling on any project corruption.

Thanks - it seems like a pretty weird thing to be only happening in that one project.

Well, no luck. Got the same error message as X2.  Redownloaded the file and tried that. No again.  It seems it doesn't like my interface.

Got it - ok I will see what gets possessed on my system when I try to open and play this project.

It sound like you should rename it to "I'll Tell You Where to Go".

I'll post back after trying it.
