X2 file: Session drummer no sound
Hi all, This is a new-to-me problem that I've never had to troubleshoot before. I've imported a file from X1 into X2 - and I had a full Session Drummer track that worked in X1 but now has no sound. So I assume its a signal flow issue, but I don't know where to start looking. -ryan

Are you sure it is an audio issue? Could it be an issue with midi? Could there be a difference in midi channels, between the track's events and the drum module? Also, are you seeing any meters move on playback? Can you detail the routing assignments and the track setups? If you select the midi track and trigger some events (keyboard controller or drum pad or whatever), do you get sound and/or midi activity out of SD? Bob Bone

Bob, Yeah I was wrong I misspoke, it's probably a midi issue. I've checked Session Drummer in the new file that I imported. No sound when I load any kit, or tap on the pads with my mouse. I'll close the file and open a different X2 project - and SD will be fine in that one. So I don't know what to look for.

also, no meters move on the SD track (of the file in question) - checked muting and soloing. still nothing.

So click on the Midi track (the one with the meters moving) and check to see if it is outputting to an instance of Session Drummer. Open the Session Drummer soft synth and make sure you have a drum kit loaded. When it is working properly, you should be able to click on the images of the drums and hear the sound for that drum.

thanks I'll check that out. One thing I did notice is that when I loaded different kits (in this particular file that was imported from X1) - the drums were kinda "grayed out" and did not play when I clicked them.

Perhaps it isn't finding the kit you had loaded in X1? Not sure... maybe relative paths are causing a glitch. If you map to a valid drum program, perhaps it will suddenly snap into place.

After you have opened Sonar do not hit play. Open SD3 and click on the kit pieces and see if they make sound. If they do hit play. If they do not play anymore, it's probably an RPN or NRPN causing the issue. If this is the case, open the Event View and make it so only the RPNs and NRPNs are showing. Then delete them. Though it should not be this since it worked in X1. I'm just offering another possible.

I think I might have an overall MIDI problem. I imported some MIDI files of strings from Finale into this project - and they didn't play either. So somehow I don't have any MIDI playback capability at all...

Let's go back to the top. Have you stepped through the sonar midi demo to make sure you've got the basics?

Yeah I have the basics. In fact I just created a new project from scratch and Session drummer and the strings MIDI files work just fine in the new project. It's just the pre-existing projects that MIDI sounds don't work in.

hmm..... I notice that if I look under Prefs -> MIDI -> Devices -> I have no MIDI input or output devices listed. Could that be a problem? How do I rescan for or add MIDI devices? I never had to do this in the past with X1.

Ah ... Very frustrating! I didn't have that problem. It makes me wonder if installation is correct. Have you launched as administrator and registered the software?

I have a problem mentioned here before in which Sonar resets the Ins and Outs for various tracks. For example, something that should be going to Session Drummer might be going to Fantom, or MIDI that should be going to port C on my MIDISPORT are routed to Console. This is probably not your situation, but it only takes a second to check. This is a very elusive and bizarre problem but luckily easy (though annoying) to correct.

thanks I'll try that then contact support. A few days ago, I had to do a full re-install b/c I had a few issues that I couldn't seem to resolve. Maybe that killed my MIDI stuff. :)

If you go to Windows Device Manager (lots of ways to get there, one is to hit the Windows button, then right-click on Computer, then click on Manage, and when Computer Management opens up you will see Device Manager on the left side - click on it to open Device Manager) Once in Device Manager, check to see if your midi devices drivers are loaded and functional by expanding "Sound, video, and game Controllers". I wonder if your Power Options may be set to allow selective turning off of idle USB devices. Just a couple of thoughts there, Bob Bone

I think I'm getting closer but still have not found the answer. On this particular project where I'm having the SD problems - the Output is NOT set to Master. On all my other projects that DO work, the SDrummer output is routed through to the Master bus. Problem with this one -- the Master isn't even listed as an output option! Why is that?

You can't choose a bus if it causes a bus loop. For example, if you route Bus A to Bus B, you can't output bus B to bus A. Bus A will not show up in the list. You cannot output a midi track directly to a bus. It MUST go to a midi synth. All audio tracks should be routable to any bus or Interface Output.

But all of my other projects - SD is routed this way IN: Midi OMNI - Out: Master. and they all work fine.
