X2 upgrade, Windows 7 upgrade

Hi all,

I'm planning to upgrade to X2 (smart tool and snap improvements plus pro channel fx chains look great), but it also means upgrading Windows (I'm on 32bit Vista now). I'd been putting it off because it only made sense to go to 64bit OS, and somehow I was convinced that my system couldn't run 64bit OS, and I haven't had the money to put into a major hardware upgrade. But, last night I realized my system can run 64bit Windows, so no hardware upgrade necessary. Awesome! So I'm figuring  to pick up an OEM copy of Windows 7 Professional and some more RAM. But a couple of questions:

First: I want to be absolutely sure I'm not missing anything being 64bit compatible. Core 2 Duo E8500 is 64bit processor, Line 6 Toneport UX2 and M-Audio Axiom 49 both have 64bit Windows 7 drivers available. Windows 7 upgrade advisor didn't note any problems. So, good to go?

Second: An OEM version of Windows 7 can be authorized on an old PC that has a previous Windows version (also OEM) installed and authorized, right? I ask because I've never actually done that before. I've always upgraded OS's when also building a new PC or doing a major upgrade.

Thanks, looking forward to getting X2 going soon

If I wasn't doing this I'd just be doing something else...

Hi, I did a quick check for you on the OS. THing is an OEM license "lives and dies" on the PC it shipped with. So, the best thing is to get the UPGRADE..hope this helps
Note: If your computer is running Windows XP, you’re eligible to buy the upgrade version of Windows 7. However, when you upgrade, you’ll need to first back up all of your files to an external drive, and then re-install your applications from the original discs or setup files. For detailed instructions, see Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 (custom installation).

Always a good idea to install onto a new HD.  You can alway plop the old one back in if you need to.  Also, Win 8 is very close.  Why not wait?

Hey thanks for the replies. As far as I can tell, I can get an OEM full version of Windows 7 Pro for a lot less than the upgrade version, so I'd rather do that. My only concern is that I can actually authorize it on the very same machine for which my Windows Vista OEM license exists. In other words, one Windows OEM license can only authorized on one machine, but can one machine authorize more than one OEM license?

As far as Windows 8 on this machine, I thought about it, but the upshot is that AFAIK when I build a new machine in the future (probably at least six months or so from now), I'll have to purchase a new OEM version of Windows 8 then anyway, whether I upgrade to 7 or 8 on my current machine now. So it looks like I could save a few bucks on the upgrade deal to 8 (rather than OEM 7 full version) when it's released, but I'm not sure it's worth it since, a)I'll have to wait a few weeks, b)there will quite possibly be unpleasant headaches with a brand new OS until they get some initial patches out, and c)I'll have to purchase a a full OEM version of 8 in the future for my next build anyway.

And yeah, I agree I would prefer installing onto a new HD altogether. I'll have to see how my budget looks and possibly wait a couple of more weeks if necessary.

If I wasn't doing this I'd just be doing something else...

Well, unfortunately after further research I've concluded that any upgrading of my current system short of new MB/CPU will be a waste of money and time in the long run. To make a long story short, my MB can only use DDR2 memory, which is about double the cost per gb of DDR3 memory, and my specific MB (Asus P5Q SE) has a confirmed issue with utilizing all four DIMM slots. I currently have 4gb (2 x 2gb) and going up to at least 8gb - and preferably 16 with the option to expand later (the main reason for wanting to go to 64bit OS) is not a practical possibility.

So I guess I'll be waiting until I can build a new system altogether.

If I wasn't doing this I'd just be doing something else...

That must be disappointing.  I imagine X2 will run just fine on Vista in the mean time.
