X3 How To: Select only a single clip *without* material from overlapping clips?
I record ~150 concerts per year. Mastering and editing the concerts often involves sliding clips together, removing silence, shortening applause, dropping in portions of rehearsal. Basically -- lots of fine tuning of how clips fit together. I have just upgraded to X3 (previously X1, Producer 7, and Home Studio before that) and am having difficulty selecting individual clips. Here is an example. - I have the end of one song (Clip A) and beginning of another (Clip B). I need to slide them together.
- I take Clip B and overlap it with the end of Clip A. They auto-crossfade. GREAT.
- Next (or later, or at any time...) I want to adjust the timing, starting Clip B a little later to fit the music. When I select just Clip B (by clicking the top portion of the clip) and move it, it also moves the portion of Clip A that was underneath Clip B. OH NO! I need Clip A to stay still.
How do I select just one clip without any overlapping/crossfaded material from other clips being included? Thank you.

I recently had all of the problems you describe and posted here. There was no response but I did manage to get the job done. I found that I needed to lock individual clips in a track if I wanted move other clips in the same track. I used the lock location command. It was the only way I could be sure the clips would stay put.

Thank you for the response, John. This does not bode well. I need to move clips a lot. Anyone else? I'm hoping I don't need to go back to an earlier version (or switch to Sadie or Pyramix).

I can't reproduce this no matter what I do. I assume you're talking standard tracks, right? Not Take Lanes? If I have two clips in a track and crossfade them, I can move the "top" or "bottom" clip independently. If the clips still overlap after one of them is moved, the crossfade time adjusts to accommodate the new amount that overlaps. E.g., if one of the clips is moved further away, a smaller portion of the clips overlap, so now the crossfade is shorter. I would like to know how to reproduce this, because there are times when moving multiple clips by only moving one would be convenient! Are you sure they're not grouped? Does select all, right-clicking on a clip, and choosing "Remove Selected Clips from Groups" help?

Ah, can't you just click on the clip with the clip filter on?

Checking. Maybe I can upload some screenshots. To clarify: yes, these are two clips on one track. I can move Clip B fine and the crossfade adjusts accordingly UNTIL I click away. Then, next time I click on Clip B, it also manipulates the portion of Clip A that is overlapped. Regarding the "Clip Filter", I assume you mean the Edit Filter: Yes, the channel is set to Clips.

OK. This is weird. Now it is behaving like I wanted. Five minutes ago it wasn't. Thinking/looking hard to see if there is anything I'm doing differently...

Did you ever figure out how to make it act "incorrectly"? As mentioned, I would find that a time-saver if it meant I didn't have to group, lasso, or control-click clips to move together.

IT'S BACK. If I select and move a SINGLE CLIP it will also move material from other clips that overlap with it. This is not OK and chances are good I will need to switch DAWs real soon.

I've just updated the program with the latest patch, and it is back to "normal".

Not saying this is the case, but an update doesn't necessarily mean that it fixes a bug. It could restore a default that was changed accidentally. Unfortunately I haven't experienced a situation like you describe so I can't say how to get out of it. I think the key is to find out what in Sonar can link clips in some way so they react as you describe...maybe there's some option or check box somewhere...then if it happens again, you'll know what to do. Anyone?
