I'll fill out the bug report. This feature is very important to me, as the music I compose frequently uses more than 4/4 time, and 1/4 notes.

Can you elaborate?  I will attempt to repro and confirm.

Re: X3 - In PRV: Grid Resolution - Follow Snap Settings 2013/09/30 14:26:38 (permalink)
This is tricky, because it involves both the snap setting in the track view, and the snap setting in the PRV.
To reproduce
1) Open project with simple instrument tracks, and view the tracks in the PRV.
2) In PRV -> View, select Grid Resolution -> Follow Snap Settings
3) The problem: Changing the snap setting in the PRV (top right) has no affect on the grid resolution.

Now, to reproduce some quirky behavior:

1) Change snap setting in PRV, e.g. to 1/32. Note that it has no effect on grid resolution. Zoom in to confirm.
2) Change snap setting in track view, to anything, e.g. Whole. Note that the grid resolution in the PRV changes to the correct setting for the PRV, e.g. 1/32.

This means: Changes to PRV snap settings don't affect grid resolution until you change the snap setting (to any value) in the track view.

It looks like the refresh to the PRV is missing after you change the PRV snap setting, but the refresh finally gets triggered when you change the snap setting in the track view.

Thanks!

Mine seems to snap to what ever it is set to.  If I tell it to snap to 1/8 note in the control bar...the PRV will snap to 1/8 note.  But if I tell it to snap to 1/16 note in the upper right hand corner of the PRV it will snap to 1/16 regardless of what it is set to in the control bar.

Unless I am misunderstanding what you are referring to....mine seems to be working as it did in X2.

  1. Snap works fine in PRV -- to whatever I set it to in the PRV snap.
  2. That's not the issue.
  3. The issue is that the grid lines won't show according to the snap settings.
Thanks.

Re: X3 - In PRV: Grid Resolution - Follow Snap Settings 2013/09/30 14:35:56 (permalink)
I just clicked the "follow snap settings".  Now when I change the snap setting in the control bar....the PRV follows that snap setting regardless of what the snap setting is at in the PRV.  I would think that is how it is supposed to work.....hence the name "follow snap settings".  I maybe wrong but that is how I would interpret it.

No, Teds_Studio, I believe that the "Grid Resolution" setting refers to how the grid displays.

This is a carryover issue from earlier versions. You have to toggle global snap off and on (hotkey N) with every change in PRV resolution to get the grid to follow.

Within the PRV go to View and select "Show Vertical Gridlines"

Below that, select "Grid Resolution" and set it to whichever resolution you need.

The Grid Lines and the Snap Settings do not affect one another, they are separate entities.

Thanks so much brundlefly! Toggling global snap off and on with 'N' does the trick, and is an acceptable work around for me. Oddly enough, I didn't have to do this in X2 Studio. Maybe this was an issue in X2 Producer? I've noticed that the upgrade to X3 Studio has some "hand-me-downs" from Producer, e.g. the ProChannel. Perhaps this bug is a "hand-me-down" as well.

Still, I would prefer not to have to hit 'N' twice each time I change the snap setting in the PRV. I hope Cakewalk fixes it.

I beg to differ! With "Follow Snap Settings" selected for Grid Resolution, changing the snap setting in PRV is supposed to change the Grid Resolution. That's how it works in X2 Studio, and it's a feature that I rely heavily on. Read the previous two posts: toggling global snap off and on with 'N' is a work around. It's a short-cut method for performing the same steps I've outlined in "Now, to reproduce some quirky behavior".

Thanks.

You're welcome. Interesting that it was not a problem in previous versions of Studio. It's been an issue in Producer all along.

I suggest you file a quick Problem Report:

http://www.cakewalk.com/support/contact/problemreport.aspx

The Bakers prioritize issues partly on the basis or of report frequency, and they don't generally follow the forums closely enough to know how many user are bothered by a particular issue otherwise.
