X3: No more MIDI background color?

Apparently, adjusting the background color of MIDI clips is no longer an option as of X3?

You can do it for existing clips*.
You can't do it for track defaults, or explicit tracks.
Phooey is right.

* select track so that all clips highlighted; inspector: clips; deleselect [ ] use track color; select back and fore color.

Hmm, I hadn't investigated this yet. If it is true then it is a step backwards!

Yes - I double-checked my Sonar X2 - which has MIDI background colors as choices.
X3 does not.
This is indeed a step backwards not just because it represents less choice, but because it makes MIDI data harder to see, and doesn't afford us a good way to differentiate the look of MIDI tracks just by glancing at them. I hope Cakewalk fixes this soon - afterall, not all of us are into the "Goth" everything-must-be dark gray/black look. Assigning colors to clips is WAY too cumbersome; we need the old systemic solution that the earlier version had.

Color me confused...

<.<

>.>

... ahem. Anyway, maybe I'm misunderstanding. Can't you select the MIDI clips in question and then go to the Clip Inspector and alter the background color setting under Clip Properties?

Try this:
  • Select a bunch of clips that you want to change the color of (right click lasso select or CTRL + click)
  • Press SHIFT + I on your keyboard to open the Clip Inspector
  • Under Clip Properties change the "Background" color
  • Clear your selection and the clip background color should have changed

(Aside: I don't the MIDI background color settings in the Preferences menu in X2 actually worked. They were broken color options)

I don't have X3 yet but was told in another thread that the Inspector options for Background colors and "Use Track Colors" is no longer there.
Only Foreground colors remains.

They're there in Clip Properties. The confusion in the other thread is people probably looking at Track Properties and confusing the two.

No. This is a change from X2 to X3.
Open Preferences | Colors - look at "MIDI Tracks"
In X2, you can specify the MIDI Track Background colors; in X3, you can't.
Yes, you can go through 14 steps to assign colors to clips, or . . . we could just have it like before where you set it up once and then it is automatic all the time after that. Even if you do change clip colors manually, they will still change back if you ever "Bounce to Clips."

I understand what you're saying, but that was a broken menu option. This is what I was referring to with:

I think it has actually been broken since SONAR X1. I'm not rejecting your feedback by the way. I understand what you're getting at in regards to ease of use.

Actually - the MIDI tracks background color options works just fine in X2, and the default can be set via the Preferences | Color.
As I said, this is a change from X2 to X3 [which now does not offer this option].

I know the settings in the Clip Inspector work, but you're saying setting the Default settings in the Preferences menu is working for you? I see multiple bug reports internally about this setting setting not working for customers and it doesn't work for me either. It was ultimately removed from the Preferences color option as being obsolete (i.e. having no affect) along with some other color preferences that were confusing customers.

Have you tried my suggestion by the way? It's hardly 14 steps.

Any chance you used the migration wizard to migrate from an older version of SONAR (pre X series)?

I think there's confusion about the X2 Preferences - Colors menu.

"MIDI Track Background" colors did NOT work, but...

You could change the colors using "Track Background" colors which was global for all MIDI & Audio tracks.

Hope that confuses you more helps.

Hmm . . . no, we're still not on the same page.
-Preferences | Colors did work in X2 for MIDI track background colors [see screen shot below]
-No, I did not migrate from a pre-X version of Sonar
-Yes - changing a series of clips is less than 14 steps - for one track, one time; but multiply that process by many MIDI tracks and many projects . . . well, you see what I mean. I'd rather set the options and not waste hundreds of clicks getting what I already have with X2.
[I don't mean to belabor the point, but this will mean A LOT of adjusting of MIDI tracks in X3]

pdarg is absolutely correct.

MIDI Track Background colors worked fine, just like Audio Track Background colors,  in X1 and X2.
X3 took away the ability to set default-per-track clip background colors (both audio and midi).

However, in X3, you can select existing clips of any type, and override the default background colors hard-coded in X3.

Yes, you can indeed take this approach - but as I stated above, it takes A LOT of work to get something we had by default in X1 and X2.

I put in an official feature request to Cakewalk. Maybe we'll see it in X3c?

Hi Guys, This is the first thing I noticed in X3, very annoying.
Would be great if we could get this working again as it was in X2.
In the Track view - If you choose the option not to show clip content then you will get some colours, not sure where those colours are defined though as I haven't looked into it that deep. But at the moment my clips have a dark background and the contents of the clips have the track colour.
The video about the new GUI says that track headers are now blue, mine are not , they are Black.
I also have white dotted lines around some of the clips, they weren't there in X2 either.

My clips headers are also black - just as they were in X2. But when I expand take lanes, the "pseudo-clip" in the main track DO have a blue header.
I kind of like it this way (normal clip black header, "fake" clip blue header)

I'm sure us folks who migrated settings from previous X2 installations are seeing lots of strange things color-wise. But the loss of clip background color control is particularly irksome.

I really haven't messed with MIDI clip colors, but, do they change per-track if you modify the track color itself?

Yes - but the MIDI track background is still dark gray/black.
If the X3 Track inspector offered an option to change both track foreground/backgrouhnd colors, we'd be all set.
X2 allowed; X3 does not.

Obsolete because nobody at home used these wonderful options?

MS removed the defrag graphics because it confused users.

Who are these mystery confused customers/users?

And why do they get preferential veto power resulting in the sadness of the many who did not exclaim their happiness with the way it was?

The old squeaky wheel syndrome.   Don't figger why the other 3 wheels are not squeaking.

Just oil all of them to stop the whining. Even if the oil damages all of the wheels.
