X3 Producer Trial won't install due to bad paths

I downloaded the trial version of X3 Producer a few months ago, and just got around to trying to install it. It's from January, so I guess it's version X3d.

No-go - it gets as far as the Arpeggiator data and then starts trying to install to a completely invalid path. Being stubborn, I clicked Ignore, figuring I could fix it up later. I got the message for the next pattern, then the next... after about 5 minutes of clicking, it moved on from Arpeggiator patterns to CAL scripts and it became plain that almost nothing was going to end up installed properly so I cancelled.

I am installing alongside Sonar 8.5, but I don't see why that should affect this installation. I don't have a C:\Cakewalk Content directory and never have (not that this path would have worked if I did).

I don't suppose there's anything I can do about this, is there? Is there an X3e version of the trial where this might have been fixed? I don't see anything promising in the changelog.

It is recommended that downloading Sonar, whatever version, is done using a browser with a built-in download manager, such as Chrome, or a dedicated download manager.

Further, you may have corrupted download files - there are freeware hash value generators available, and Cakewalk lists the correct hash values for each of the download files for Sonar, and you can compare them to make sure the downloads were done properly.

Additionally, I found that my antivirus software created corrupted files during the download of X2, and I had to temporarily suspend my antivirus software to get a valid set of download files for Sonar.

And, for the installation 2 things: 1st, I recommend you right-click on the install program for Sonar and click on Run As Administrator, and 2nd, I also recommend you temporarily suspend your antivirus software during the Sonar installation.

I forgot to add that there is no issue whatsoever with retaining 8.5.3 or whatever prior versions of Sonar you wish to keep along with X1, X2, X3, or any other future release.

I think I saw this comment in another thread about the demo, but it did not click until I saw your screen capture... A colon (:) is not allowable in a directory path... and that is where it is hanging on you. Can you do the install and "customize" that directory path? "C:\Cakewalk ContentC:" is a "no go"... if possible, reinstall and choose "specify directory" (or similar), and check all of those path names.

I thought maybe the Sonar install program had messed it up, but I suppose the OP could have inadvertently set the path to that invalid value.  It looks like that C: at the end was/is the beginning of another specification of drive.

    What OS are you on?

Run the Installer as "administrator", that might clear it up, or as others have said, could be a corrupt download.

I think its not the colon but the second C with the colon. It should be C:\Cakewalk Content

It seems to be working running as administrator, though it's obviously installing to C:\Cakewalk Content, which is the wrong place for apps to install data these days. I didn't get any say in the paths, which makes it even more important that the installer should be getting it right in the first place. Not impressed.

Are you running a custom install? You can change paths there.

My path of c:\cakewalk content is the arps, fx chains, templates etc.... But thats where it is supposed to default.

The actual .exe will go in c:\program files for 64 bit and c:\program files (x86) for 32 bit.

Btw, I have UAC in Windows disabled, its a pain in the ass. If you arent a novice then disable UAC.

There is no option for a custom install with the installer I downloaded.

Installers for Windows programs should not be creating new directories on the root of the C: drive in 2014. Per-user data should be in the user profile, machine-wide data should be in C:\ProgramData.

Also, disabling UAC is a dumb thing to do, no offence. It's there to protect you from security risks which are quite significant these days. Any app that requires those specific privileges during installation can ask for them.

Re: X3 Producer Trial won't install due to bad paths 2014/04/10 08:48:12 (permalink)
@Kylotan - VERY happy this seems to be working for you now.

It is my recollection that there is an option early in the install to do a custom install, and I also seem to recall getting the opportunity to change location paths for content, so I am a bit confused.

Additionally, and in any case, if you go to Edit>Preferences>File>Folder Locations, you will see the different folders where you can relocate them to a path of your choosing.  To do so, I recommend that you do a copy/paste operation, and only then removing the original content, followed by altering the location in Preferences and making sure Sonar finds the relocated content.

All my Cakewalk Content for all of my retained releases lives on my D: drive, as does all data.  Only the OS, applications, appdata, and ProgramData live on my C: drive.  I have my user libraries all moved over to the data drive (D:) too.  While I could have chosen to have Cakewalk Content live in ProgramData (I suppose) - I didn't want to do that.

Anyways, since this seems to be working for you now, do you mind editing the subject line of your initial thread post and adding something like 'Solved'?  That would make it easier for future folks looking for solutions to similar issues to find an answer.  This is certainly not a forum requirement - just a helpful thing to do.  :)

    Thanks, and again congrats.

Re: X3 Producer Trial won't install due to bad paths 2014/04/10 09:05:42 (permalink)
This is the trial install, not the regular install. I have always had more options in the past when installing Sonar, but that wasn't the case for this trial download.

One thing Cakewalk does that is frustrating is put its sample content all over the place. It seems like a different location for each version. I've had to move things out of My Documents before, for example. To add insult to injury, in this install it has actually used the correct location of C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\SONAR X3 Producer Trial for a lot of data - but then pushed a bunch of stuff into C:\Cakewalk Content too. It shouldn't be doing this, as it complicates backup procedures, as well as making it awkward to find content when you need it. It's great that Sonar lets you move the directories (and I always do this), but the defaults should be in the proper places, and ideally there wouldn't be fifteen different paths to amend.

I don't consider this thread solved as such; there's been no explanation for why the installer was getting the path wrong. Ideally someone from Cakewalk will see this and realise that something needs fixing.

As an aside, I'm amused to see that the 'Migrate Sonar Preferences' box doesn't appear to have been changed since 1996. And still has misleading checkboxes you can't use. And produces a totally misleading warning about my audio data files. And failed to migrate any of my paths from 8.5 over, despite finding the .ini file. *sigh*

This error condition is certainly not widely reported, and it appears that other than understanding why it may have occurred, and perhaps seeking dialog on why they choose locations for components and/or content, the error condition itself seems to have been resolved and the installation completed.

Good luck with it then, I'm out.
