X3 bug: normal template always loads despite the setting
This setting can be adjust in Preferences | File | Advanced Unclicking this box seems to make no difference however; the Normal template still loads on start-up even when it is not checked. Cakewalk - please fix.

Cannot confirm - one of the first things I changed. I always get a blank workspace at startup. But I did it in X3a already - and run X3 basic.

Hmm . . . that's odd. It's not working here - and what's weorder is that the box won't stay checked. It's unchecked but still loads the normal template on every start.

That probably means you are not running as administrator. Launch SONAR by right-clicking and select "run as administrator" or select "run as administrator" in the Compatibility tab in Properties.

I found the registry entry. Set HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\X3 key AlwaysLaunchTemplate to 0 (zero). At least that is my best guess, it is the entry in X2 that controls the display (I do not have X3 installed yet).

Did you try to toggle the value in the registry? You could also try re-personalizing SONAR by CTRL-SHIFT when starting SONAR. This will reset some registry keys and copy files from the master set in "C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\SONAR X3 Producer" to "your user directory\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk\SONAR X3 Producer". Keep in mind, if you have made customizations to data in "your user directory\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk\SONAR X3 Producer" such as AUD.INI, Cakewalk.ini Master.ins, you might want to make a backup copy of the directory before re-personalizing. Alternately, phone support will be open in about an hour.

Since you were not aware of Run As Administrator being different than having Admin privileges, did you by chance NOT use Run As Administrator when you did your installation? I do not know if that has bearing or not - but some people have reported various issues when their install did not specifically Run As Administrator. Bob Bone

I just double-clicked on the install files, and they installed from there. I am the administrator on this machine, so I don't think that is the issue.

But since Vista all application are run as User - unless forced to admin. I would try the suggestion to rightclick and install. Some parts of registry are not accessible unless elevated to admin.

Are you logged in as the administrator or did you just grant a user ID administrator privileges. There is a difference. Normally the administrator ID is hidden and it has a higher level of access than a user ID with administrator rights.

The Cakewalk Read Me file that gets created when you open the Read Me First application has only the following text: " To install SONAR in Windows 7 or Windows 8, you must be logged in as a user with administrative privileges. You may install from any account, but you will be prompted to elevate your privileges when the installer is launched. Once the product has been installed, it may be run from any account without the need for administrative privileges." I do not know why they do not ask for the installation to be specifically Run As Administrator, but lots and lots of us here in the forum actually DO right-click on the installer and specifically click on Run As Administrator, in order to get the right privileges for the install. To the Cakewalk folks - If indeed it is recommended to Run As Administrator, I would ask that you update the Read Me document to reflect that, so that folks do not continue to run into this issue - which seems to be often enough to warrant some sort of change to the doc. I think you are mis-understanding the term "Administrator" as already mentioned several times. I can assure you that the option does work. You should try a re-install using the "Run as administrator" option found by right clicking on the install icon. If that doesn't work then start looking further, but as I understand it there is a difference between "administrator privileges"and an "Admin" account.

Logging on with an account that has administrator privileges is NOT the same thing as Run As Administrator. You MUST explicitly tell the Sonar installer program to Run As Administrator, to get the correct privileges to do what it needs to do. To do so, right-click on the installer program, then click Run As Administrator. We are trying to help you, and this advice works and has been verified over and over and over and over again for a LONG time. I just gave the same advice THIS AFTERNOON to another poster, and he installed again using Run As Administrator, and he just thanked me and marked my post helpful, because it fixed his problems. So please, give it a shot. Bob Bone

I appreciate your efforts here. I re-installed X3 and the X3b patch - using the "Run as Administrator" approach for both EXE's There is no difference; the box won't stay checked, but still loads the normal template on start. Cakewalk - this is a bug issue - please comment.

Thanks for hanging in there. I am wondering if your removal of X3 was complete or not, as there are a few things to be done in addition to going into Control Panel>Uninstall a Program. So, if you don't mind one more crack at removing X3 and installing it again, please do the following: 1. Go into Control Panel>Uninstall a Program, and run the uninstaller for Sonar X3 (both 32-bit and 64-bit, if installed). If it asks you if you want to delete any unused items, tell it 'No To All'. 2. Now, open a Windows Explorer window and paste the following into the address bar, without any quotes, and hit Enter: 'C:\Users\your-user-name-goes-here\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk' 3. OK, for the above, if you see a sub-folder called SONAR X3 Producer, delete it. 4. Now paste the following path into the address bar of the Windows Explorer window, again without the quotes, and then hit Enter: 'C:\Program Files\Cakewalk' 5. For the above, which is for a 64-bit X3 install, look for a sub-folder called 'SONAR X3 Producer', and if there delete it. 6. Now paste the following path into the address bar of the Windows Explorer window, again without the quotes, and then hit Enter: 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk' 7. For the above, which is for a 32-bit X3 install, look for a sub-folder called 'SONAR X3 Producer', and if there delete it. 8. Now it's time to delete 2 registry keys, if present. Run Regedit (the Windows Registry Editor). There are 2 keys to look for, one for 32-bit X3 and the other for 64-bit X3: \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\ The above is for 32-bit X3. Once this key is opened, look for a SUB-key called X3, and if that sub-key is there, then delete it. (meaning delete the X3 sub-key, if present). \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\ The above is for a 64-bit X3 install. Again, after opening the above key, look for a SUB-key of X3, and delete the X3 sub-key, if present. The above steps should get completely rid of a 32-bit and a 64-bit X3 install, and once these steps are completed, you should be able to do a clean install of X3, making SURE this time around to right-click on the installer and then click on 'Run As Administrator'. Sorry to put you through that again, but if there were any remnants of X3 they could have theoretically jazzed things up. Please perform the above steps and post back after completing the install and seeing if that took care of it. Bob Bone

After all, it's not like it's a showstopper bug. Registry stuff is often copied to many places - local machine, users and current user. I often find you have to tweak more than one place in general. To correct such things one might try to activate loading last project at startup - and later restarting, remove that again - and see it things are turned around. When upgrading to S8.5 from 4, I did the mistake of migrating old setting and folders from S4 and it was a mess with many things. Project templates not compatible and such. From then on I let new install keep it's defaults.
