X3 comping midi

The promotional video for the new comping features doesn't mention MIDI.  Sorry if I missed this, but could someone confirm that the new features - eg. picking and choosing from the take lanes - can be used for midi comping.  Can "SOS" be disabled so only the current midi take is heard while still hearing any preexisting tracks?

Thanks, Ron

    Hi Ron,
Maybe I'm just unaware  -  but I think MIDI is generally edited - not comped.  I would think that most people don't do multiple MIDI takes, they just edit the data to get the desired result.

Comping multiple MIDI clips is usually just a matter of selecting the desired clips then using Bounce to Clip to create one contiguous MIDI clip. Just watch out for doubled up notes or other weirdness if any of the clips overlap. Then as Stone House said edit the notes as desired in the PRV. I'm currently in the middle of this exact process with a drum track I made a complete mess of. lol

One way of working with comping midi is to hit Ctrl-L after comping the selected midi data area. This will prevent the midi clip from looping. A pop up window will show this; just click ok.

Comping of midi tracks will also allow splitting of the track so that you move it, edit it duplicate it etc...

As Beepster mentioned, after all is done simple bounce to clip to get a single continuous clip.

The only weirdness i am experiencing is related to refresh and display problems. Sometimes after any edits, including comping or other edits, the midi notes disappear from the screen. They are still there but not seen after the edits are done. Opening the PRV will still show the notes and sometimes, shifting to different areas of the track view and coming back, the notes either show up or not...

You can indeed use the new comping features on MIDI tracks.

Same old graphical glitches. Makes inputting/editing data rather annoying.

The short answer is yes, mostly.

In comp mode, you can (say) loop record midi and each take will go into its own lane, and prior takes are muted upon playback...so you only hear the clip you are recording (no blend/sos).

You can then, go into the takes and select (entire or pieces of) them takes in the similar way as with audio.

note: with auto punch in, prior takes are not muted if the loop points are outside the punch points (I suspect this is a bug), but with normal loop mode recording its fine.

Thank you all! I have X1P (and X2P uninstalled), and am aware of the loop recording/take lane (and, of course, midi edit) features, but was wondering if the improved comping in X3 adds the same UI features shown in the demo for audio.  Sounds like the answer is "yes," which is great for a hobbiest like me who goes back to when audio wasn't even a gleam in the eye of midi sequencer publishers.

    Thx again, Ron
