X3e and IDT High Def Codec
Hi all, When I'm not using my MOTU Ultralyte Hybrid on the laptop I use the internal IDT High Def Codec using ASIO4ALL. I've set X3 to share audio drivers but Firefox seems to be stealing it as soon as it is opened. Any ideas on how to fix? I've just reinstalled Windows 7 HP and all my music software. Things used to be fine and dandy. Cheers M

"set X3 NOT to share audio drivers" Hmmm I wonder if this is at play woith the soundcard, maybe the hardware doesn;t support multi-audio sound sharing... http://mtippach.proboards.com/thread/786 Most inexpensive audio devices support a single client only at any one time.
- Windows works around this by using the kmixer, a software mixing device in order to emulate multi-client support.
- kmixer is bad for latency.
- Bypassing kmixer is one of the main points of ASIO4ALL to begin with.
- Therefore: No multi-client with ASIO4ALL - unless your audio device supports this in hardware.
- Deal with it!

I just tried RealTek on my PC. If I set the Driver Mode to "MME" in Sonar, my RealTek works with Sonar. Uninstall the ASIO4ALL and try this. ASIO4ALL works for some and can cause problems or not work for others. 50/50 chance. If whatever you want to use will work without ASIO4ALL you are better off.

I don't know if ASIO4ALL allows multiple applications to access it. I did run across this other driver, which seems to be somewhat similar to ASIO4ALL. http://midithru.net/Home/AsioLink This one seems to allow multiple applications to access it, and it is free. Please note that I know NOTHING whatsoever about this driver - other than I ran across it searching for ASIO sharing among multiple applications. Bob Bone

Thanks for the ideas guys. Sharing or not sharing in Sonar has the same effect. Firefox will use the Speakers which will not be available to Sonar but Sonar will happily use the headphones. ASIO4ALL outperformed MME when I had it working and I haven't tried the MidiThru yet... M

Mus, You might want to read through that thread I mentioned in my previous post - there is some interesting pointers in it... In the sound control panel under the system you have some further options, you may need to tune yours by deselecting/selecting options for your soundcard.. I'm not interested in sharing sound with other apps, here are my settings...

I use my audio interface for music apps, like Sonar and any stand-alone synths (Dim Pro, Rapture, Kontakt). I use the on-board sound chip for the default Windows audio device. I route the output from the speaker jack on the back panel to a couple of inputs on my audio interface, which allows me to have Sonar and perhaps a YouTube clip playing at the same time. If I need those 2 inputs from the audio interface, then I change the default Windows audio device to be the HDMI connection to the TV I use as a display for the computer, and it routes sound to the TV speakers. In either case, I do not have conflict running in the above manner. Bob Bone

Why are you using ASIO4ALL at all ? It's a wrapper to fool a program expecting ASIO to interface with something else. Since Sonar has no problems with MME, why bother ?

Hi Paul, For me personally and not speaking for Mus, MME is troublesome especially when attaching Samson USB Mic, Samson keyboard controller and USB BOSE Companion speaker system, and iRig Pro... ASIO4all seems to be able to handle my setup well - albeit there is an occasional glitch and when that occurs then just before I get to the stage of pulling all my hair out I first try re-installing ASIO4all and that usually fixes what ever had gone wrong, (has happened about 2 times now in the last few months, so I can live with that).. I personally haven't had the incline to share audio between other apps when I am using sonar - I can understand at certain times would be handy but for me not worth the trouble.. Jim

It occurred to me since writing the above that I actually use the WASAPI driver on my Dell i5 laptop. For some reason this driver works best, though I don't find a laptop all the great in general.

If your computer has a Wi-Fi adapter, this very often causes MASSIVE latency spikes, which then mess up sound quality and introduce dropouts and crackles and all of that sort of stuff. What lots of folks do with their Wi-Fi adapters is to temporarily disable them or if there is a hardware on/off switch they turn the adapter OFF, just prior to launching Sonar. When finished using Sonar, they then 'enable' the Wi-Fi adapters again, or turn 'on' if they were turned off. This is an easy fix to the Wi-Fi-adapter induced latency problems. This is a really simple and harmless thing to do, by the way. Just go to Device Manager, find the Wi-Fi adapter in the list of devices, right-click on it, then click 'Disable'. Please note that this does NOT remove the drivers from your system, it just literally disables it so the drivers are not loaded while it is disabled. When you enable it again, it simply loads the already installed drivers for it, and everything is hunky dory again. (if one were to UNINSTALL the Wi-Fi adapter drivers, then you would have to scan for hardware changes again to get it to work again, so don't do that - just disable/enable) Sooooooo, please give the above a shot, and post back. I used to do this probably 5-10 times a day, when I was working on projects and also working on other things with the computer in between Sonar recording/editing/mixing/mastering sessions. I hope the above helps you get a better sound quality with reduced or even eliminated dropouts and such, Bob Bone

I'm probably don't understand your issue. I did find out, however, as I tried using my IDT HD Audio CODEC on my old Gateway laptop running Win XP that there was absolutely no driver I could find that would support something called "Stereo Mix" as I tried to record whatever it is that I hear through my Computer's Speaker system. I found that IDT doesn't suppot the feature for whatever reason. Moreover I found it impossible to replace the IDT Drivers with RealTek's for example. For whatever it might be worth, I ended up buying an external USB sound card (that I have yet to use) and finding a very reasonably priced alternative called Total Recorder http://www.totalrecorder.com/
