XLR v. TRS inputs

Hi everyone!  I've been a sonor user for probably the last 5 years, and I'm toying with upgrading to the V-700 system.
 
Currently I use a mixer for mic-pres and send each channel out through TRS into a delta 1010.  I also have a patchbay in there so I can overide the mic and plug in something else if I prefer.
 
My question is this - I know the v-700 has 16 inputs - 8 XLR and 8 TRS, but you can only use one or the other at a time.  If I were to plug in all 8 XLR's AND 8 TRS, is there a way to choose which input I want to assign to a track?  Or does one defeat the other (If I have both a TRS plugged in and an XLR cable, does it automatically just listen off, say, the XLR)?
 
I ask because I want to use the sonar mic-pres, but I also want to access the TRS inputs for other devices, and I don't want to have to constantly plug and unplug devices or microphones.
