XP 32 or XP 64

Hello Cakewalkers.

Can anyone help with this?
Ive just purchased a Dell Vostro 1510 with the below spec.

Vostro 1510 Intel Core 2 Duo T5870 (2.0GHz)
Memory 4096MB (2x2048) 800MHz DDR2
256 Mb NVIDIA GeForce 8400M

Would it be best having XP 32 or XP 64 when running SONAR 6?
Im staying away from VISTA as i personally think its evil!

And if anyone could answer this question, what do you think the maximum amount of tracks that could be used with this spec?

Thanks very very much in advance.

I know it'll run on 32 and I think it will run on 64 as well. A number of people here are starting to use the 64 bit OS...so you should be fine with either.

To the best of my knowledge, XP64 has never been supported by Cakewalk. I have seen reports of people using it succesfully, but if you have any problems, you are pretty much on your own.
Also, many VST's will not run in the 64 bit environment. I'm not sure if S6 has bitbridge or not.
Personally, I would err on the side of caution, and use a 32 bit version of XP.
Definitely do some more checking before you commit.

    XP32, for sure.

As for maximum number of tracks, that depends mostly on the number and types of soft synths, samplers and DSP in the project. If it's straight audio with minimal processing, it's unlikely you'll ever see the maximum. 200+ tracks should be no problem. OTOH, if you put a convolution reverb on every track, you might max out at 6.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

XP-x64 isn't officially supported by Cakewalk... and you won't be using more than 4GB of RAM... so I'd just use WinXP x86 (32Bit).

As for maximum audio track count, one of the most critical factors is the speed of your Audio HD.
With a laptop, the best situation is to use a fast eSATA HD (external) for recording. With the right HD, this will yield well over 100MB/Sec sustained.
That's far faster than using an internal 2.5" HD, external USB HD, or external Firewire HD.
If the laptop doesn't have an eSATA controller, you can get an express-card eSATA controller.

    Best Regards,

The strongest reason (IMO) for going with 64 is the RAM headroom. To skip over a long technical dissertation, Win32 may potentially register your 4GB of RAM as possibly as little as 3.1GB.
