XP Pro x64 & Sonar 8.5

From the specs page for Sonar 8.5:

*SONAR does not officially support Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP x64 or pre-release (RTM) versions of Windows7

But..... does it work on XP x64?

Cheers!

I while back I bought a computer that had xp x64 preinstalled on it.  From what I remember at the time it did in fact work although I switched to XP Pro not long after.  I personally would not recommend it as Sonar has clearly stated it is not a supported OS.  But that's just me.

    Cheers

    Thanks WeStudioS :)

It's not the ideal solution I agree, but I need a 64 bit OS for at least my orchestral tracking (using Kontakt 4 x64), and sadly, it appears that my audio interface (Tascam FW1804) is now "legacy" and W7 drivers are not being written for it.

I could use Vista x64, but Vista is horrible......

Vista 64 SP 2 in classic view with UAC turned off? I find it rock solid and no more of less horrible than mey steam drive XP laptop, just a lot faster.

    Really Glyn?

I have to say that I am speaking from a position of complete ignorance... I have only heard bad things about Vista, and never used it for music making (although it was on my graphics workstation for a while).

I suppose I could always vLite it to make my own stripped down version (which is what I did with my XP install using nLite).

I am using XP Pro 64 and using Sonar 8.5.2 in both 32 and 64bit.   Works just fine here.

I think it's a case of give a dog a bad name and it sticks. Most of the issues were addressed in SP1 and some further improvments made in SP2, but by that time the damage was done and the buzz that Vista sucks was unstoppable.

User Account control is a good idea poorly implemented, it drives people up the wall, but it can be turned off. I still find it strange however that software manufactures have not made software work with UAC after all this time.

I don't like the Vista interface, so I changed back to classic view.

Vista's bad reputation was also exacerbated by the slow release of compatable drivers and software causing problems for people who tried to use stuff that was not 100% compatable.

I used XPPro64Sonar64(8.3x) for a while. Finally gave up when I got sick of hunting for drivers for my hardware and bit bridge. Other than that, Sonar worked fine.

If you're absolutely in need of a 64bit OS, I think most people are having the best results Windows 7

If you're tied to older 32bit hardware, run XP32 and don't buy into the hype on newer 32bit versions of windows.

    (my opinion)

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to go for a hybrid system. Have a Vista SP2 x64 install essentially running Sonar x64 with Kontakt 4, a few plugins, and nothing else - just for my orchestral sequencing and tracking. Within this I will mix down to 5.1 stems of every instrument / group I need, which I can then bring into the x86 version of Sonar on XP Pro SP3 for mixing and adding of synths / drums / everything else.

I tend to leave the orchestra parts alone once I've "tracked" (ie sequenced) them, so that should work for the next 12 months or so :D

    Cheers,

I very briefly ran XP x64. Didn't have issues with Sonar as such but drivers for all my gear was a completely different matter. It was a nightmare that soon moved me back to XP x32, now onto Windows 7 x64.

In my experience XP x64 must be the least supported OS in existence (for drivers anyway)

    Just be aware of that.......
