XP64 or Vista64 on Q6600
Greetings. Due to all the fantastic summer sales on VSTis, I don't have enough $ left to purchase a dream computer. So, what I plan to do is to buy a Q6600 machine, 4 GB, at Costco now, and later when I do get a beastie, use this one as a slave or a dedicated Reason machine. One of the systems comes with XP64, the other with Vista64, nearly identical as to specs otherwise, both about $600 . Since some of the softsynths/softsamplers I've recently purchased, are not optimized for a 64 bit OS, I figured I might need to purchase a copy of XP32 and have a dual-boot OS system. As I've decided on Sonar PE as my DAW, for a number of reasons, I think I might as well wait for 8, coming soon. So, my question to all the gearheads is; which would you recommend, purely on the basis of which Win. 64 operating system comes pre-installed? Thanks, MC33 PS; I welcome any other suggestions, recommendations, decrees:)

Go with Vista 64, which is working well as a 64 bit platform, and definitely get XP 32 bit and do duel boot, and plan on running XP as your main DAW boot until more plugs and synths are 64 bit ready.

Thanks Lanceindastudio for the prompt reply. Would you use separate partitions, or separate drives for the two OSs?

Separate partitions same drive, -use other drive for dedicated sonar projects drive and a third drive for samples, loops, sound libraries(actual audio libraries which are always pretty big files, not presets-for example, the library for dimension pro that it asks you where to install the library to)

Im using XP Home. I see no reason to go to 64bit. 32bit is good enough. 4 gigs is more than enough and that is what i have. Anything else is overkill for me. Also, you can have a 64bit OS and install Sonar32bit on it. This is the way to go Cj Your PM box is full and its easier to talk in here, so here is my reply

Dell was on sale for $599 IIRC, (similar speced at Dell site was $819.) Two ZT machines I think they were, between $600 and $700. MC33

ORIGINAL: mungocherry33 ... but I decided against it after speaking with StudioCat Jim. Jim is a great guy to work with. Personally I'm using Vista 64, mostly because, XP 64 is on it's way out (even though it was never fully here). While I wouldn't call the transition painless, the pain is not more than I can bare, and I sure do like seeing 6GB of RAM. Note, with a 32 bit OS, you generally only get a little above 3 GB (other things beside RAM use part of the total address space). You're OS and various services might use 1GB leaving 2 GB for your app. Even if you use the 32 bit Sonar app on Vista 64 (which is a little more compatible), you can have up to 4 GB available (if you have enough RAM). This is still a lot more than what you could get with a 32 bit OS.

Hey, before you decide, make sure that your audio device drivers are compatible with whatever you're interested in loading. They don't all do 64-bit comfortably, yet, and 64-bit Vista is still rare.
