Xfer/Back Up old SR16 Drum Machine MIDI Patterns to SONAR

I plugged the MIDI OUT on the SR16 to the MIDI IN on my MOTU Traveler, chose MIDI Channel and hit record..
 
I think I'm missing a step??

    Care to share the problem and how it was overcome?  I plan something similar for my (even older) HR-16 patterns.

    simply grab a midi cable.. arm a midi Track in SONAR... hit record on SONAR track, hit play on your drum machine and you'll see the Midi Data come in.  Probably save each Track as a MIDI 0 file (save as function) and use for future loops.
     
    problem I've run into now
    1) should I sync drum machine tempo with Sonar tempo at capture??  it seems I get different timing if I don't sync.. I could see the drum machine affecting this, not sure why Sonar would
     
    2) if that's the case, you I record each pattern 3 diff times at 3 diff tempos synced.. or should one pattern synced do the job
     
    I will recapture some patterns tonight and test.
