YAY!!! I bought a MIDI keyboard!

A Key Rig 49 to be exact. Now, the big question is, what do I do now!?! There is no info with the thing, it comes with a disc for another recording program, I can't figure out how to get MC5 to recognize it. Yadda, yadda, yadda. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I will be messing with it tomorrow, and going to bed now. It looks neat, I can't wait to try it and see how much easier this is all going to be.

    First.... cool!

Now.... what sort of midi output does it have? is it USB or the traditional midi 5 pin plug?

If it's USB, you need a usb cable to connect it to the computer. It may need drivers for it to work properly. They might be on the disc or you can generally DL them from the mfg's website.

So I googled it: you need to go HERE and get the driver you need. It does look to be a USB connection.

Once you get the correct drivers installed, MC5 should recognize the KR49 and it will show up in the midi devices list.

Have fun... or if you have more questions....

Yeah, I downloaded the driver last night, and each time I tried to execute the file it kept hitting a runtime error. After all of these years, I still have no idea what one of those are. :) I finally extracted it in an older environment, or whatever, as the computer was telling me it wanted to do. Now, it told me it was successful, but for some reason I am not finding the KR in my MIDI list. It seems I was doing this all right, I am just getting tripped up somewhere. I'm off to the movies for a few, but I will be attacking this when I get home.

So you got the Ableton Live software disk, but no disk for the Keyrig software?
The 49 is advertised as plug and play (with older operating systems), but you will probably need updated drivers for your newer system.
What devices show up in the Options>MIDI Devices list?

Sounds like a driver problem to me as well, Are you sure you are downloading the correct driver for your OS?

Got it working! Now to figure out how to go about working the thing.
I do NOT seem to have the Key Rig FX studio thingy shown on the front of the box. But it is controlling sounds.

Yup! That's for sure. I do see all of these lovely instruments that came with the program and keyboard, I am just baffled now on how to get to use them. Again, it is all a learning process. Luckily I have more time for the next month than I have had previously, so I should be able to fiddle with this more.

Figured out how to record. Gotta be honest, I am not liking it too much. Am I right in thinking that the way to do the drums is to actually play them on this thing? If I hit the key off time, then the beat is off time? If so, I have to say I prefer just clicking the piano roll display.

I'm also finding that the kepboard isn't as loud as the actual program. Plus, the volume on the keys change depending on how hard I am hitting the keys. I can see how this is a benefit in many cases, but I really have to clobber these keys to get full volume.

you have touch sensitive keys.... very nice. wish my dx27 had that.

for drums, you need something like Band in a Box OR Jamstix ...either will create the tracks for you.

    The choices you have are:

    1. create your own tracks in PRV or Staff
    2. play it on the keyboard or get a midi kit
    3. use an AI program like BB or JS
    4. hire or beg a drummer

Right. The velocity-sensitive keys will transmit how hard you hit the key whereas entering notes in the PRV or staff will always have the same velocity. There may be a way to turn off the sensitivity so all the notes will be the same loundess. My keyboard has that option, but I prefer the dynamics of my playing. In fact, I'll often go into the PRV or staff and change the velocities of some notes for more variation in the loudness. You can also draw in velocity envelopes to do the same thing.
You can use MIDI Quantize so whatever parameter you select will place to notes more 'on beat' regardless of how off your playing is. The downside is (if you care about others's opinions) it can sound too mechanical, like it was played by a machine.
Whenever I record drums from the keyboard (something I recently started doing. Previously, I wrote the drum tracks in the PRV) I don't use Quantize so it will sound like a real person is playing; but, I do go in and manually change any notes that are way off. There are sometimes many of those.

Figured out how to record. Gotta be honest, I am not liking it too much. Am I right in thinking that the way to do the drums is to actually play them on this thing? If I hit the key off time, then the beat is off time? If so, I have to say I prefer just clicking the piano roll display.
One way to do drums is to actually play them on your controller, yes. Understand that your controller allows you to play your softsynths real time. So if you play the notes off time, they will be recorded off time. I like to pound out drums on my controller, particularly hand drums, but I also keep the metronome running. If you prefer to lay out your drums using the PRV, that's fine.
Use whichever method is most comfortable or efficient.

I'm also finding that the kepboard isn't as loud as the actual program. Plus, the volume on the keys change depending on how hard I am hitting the keys. I can see how this is a benefit in many cases, but I really have to clobber these keys to get full volume.
I think what you are seeing here is the difference between control and defaults. Unless otherwise directed, notes entered in the PRV will be at maximum velocity(and as such, maximum volume). And yes, to get maximum volume with a velocity sensitive keyboard, you may need to really whack the keys.
You should be able to adjust the velocity range on the controller itself. If the controller is set to a lower value, such as 64, all of the notes will have a lower velocity. You may have an option to override the velocity sensitivity, if you choose to.
Most synths, including drums, respond nicely to velocity by introducing vairations in tone and timbre, even variations on the attack.
Don't be afraid to clobber the keys. I'll range from featherlight strokes to savage attacks on the keyboard. You won't hurt it.
Check your manual, and learn what adjustments you have available.
Once you get a feel for it, your controller can be a great way way to play your softsynths.

here's the cool thing Carl, you can set up multiple tracks for drums... let one be the kick...and in it all you play on the keyboard is one note..the kick... simply keep time.

On a different track, put the snare, cymbals, toms, hats, all on their own tracks and repeat the recording....

Then again, I saw a video of a Japanese man who learned the drums totally on the keyboard with his hands and fingers.... obviously a learned skill, but rather amazing and totally do-able.
