YEAH .....OK.........YA WANNA KNOW WHY I'M A SONORITE ???

At the risk of being accused of plagiarizing recent threads OR worse, being sued for thread copyright (LOL) ,
I do feel it might be timely & approriate to think about what 'IT' is that:
1. Has you reading this thread, along with all the other member threads & being a part of this forum.
2. Makes you so passionate (ie: Perhaps) about the future of Cakewalk / Sonar / The Cakewalk Team (Remaining - cheers Guys) / and now ,  our most fortunate and welcome association with Meng , his Bandlab team and Bandlab.
3. Gives Cakewalk / Cakewalk SONAR / that obvious edge , that the other players don't have.

 In other words,
with all of the critical , often impassioned discussion going on at the moment , a fair balance would be to
include some positivity ( YES.... POSITIVITY ) which focuses on the 'Quality of the cheese rather than the excruciating disappointment at the discovery of random holes ' and how they should be plugged up :(
Also , I am fearful that Meng ( and God Bless You Meng :) ) may just be starting to have niggling,
second thoughts ..... (eg :"OMG..........What have I done" !!!! ) .....LOL

All Jokes aside,

I'll kick off with a post I lodged on another thread earlier today (OR Overnight to many of you Sonorites).

If you wish to express the positives to Meng and others, that would be nice........and refreshing.

*** Perspective - This thread comment was In Support of Retaining current MIDI capabilities.

For myself , I am a duo performer who is heavily into editing midi to suit our particular requirements and sound preferences.
When Live, we use a Roland SD50 sound module and VanBasco as a lightweigt Lyrics Prompt. Has worked magnificently for years..and Sonar's timely , seamless load
from windows explorer with a double click, and quick running of the MIDI files is why we prefer SONAR.
SONAR has the ability to make edits and save without losing our preferred GS Format and without losing our mostly, personally loaded lyrics (ie: per Serenade )
I tried a plethera of other DAWs over the past months.....even purchased a couple ( largely under sufferance).
To me.....as far as my quick editing needs........the others appeared clunky or too complicated ....and OH Boy...I missed SYSX & Event List, bigtime as it was
absent or significantly diminished in many of them.
Many trial DAWS seemed, shall we say...not as MIDI friendly. Admittedly my time with them was limited - but enough to assess our critical needs.
BUT that's for my use..............But let's face it..... it really is 'Horses for Courses'.
I suggest Sonar has a very wide appeal ......let's not set adrift what is possibly a huge MIDI user base.

** Additionally,
I think Cakewalk SONAR has a 'Top Of The Range' GUI.
Unlike a multitude of other players........SONAR respects the varying needs of those with a vision impairment.
(ie:Sharper / larger text and incremental visual contrast..........& let's not forget the immense, visual / Contrast flexibility
afforded by the'Theme Editor' in this regard).
SONAR also 'slipstreams' in regards to multiple monitors.
( eg:Try multiple monitors on Pro Tools for example ......(They have no idea).....oh bugger .......Just reminded me.....I'm locked into
a bloody 12 month contract with these guys :( )

Anywho !!!
ANYONE ????

Hey Frank... no surfin' here, dude!  Atlanta is... a big city. Except for the downtown Centennial Park area, not much distinctive appeal. Way different than New York or Philly which have great distinctive appeal. How is Melbourne? Looks like it's not far from you...

No problem being positive,  it's just that this area is supposed to be for support.

That's tech support, not emotional support   This thread is exactly what the CH should be used for, but we've spent 3 years trying to convince folk to use it as intended....

To me.....as far as my quick editing needs........the others appeared clunky or too complicated ....and OH Boy...I missed SYSX & Event List, bigtime as it was

Hey Frank, I'm from Whyalla over in South Australia, and back in the day ( mid 90's and into early naughties) I was half of a duo using midi tracks, both purchased, and self made in the Cakewalk of the day, and using Cakewalks' built in midi player, which at the time was rather clunky.

After searching out and discarding lots of midiplayer software, which for one reason or other didn't cut it in a live situation, I finally stumbled upon a guy in Canada who was a software engineer, and had written a software midiplayer that really was suitable for live work. Over the years he has carried on development so now is capable of managing all mid, wav, mp3 and CDG formats, and is also able to handle your lyrics in word format.

At the time we were running this software it was only in version 2 and my partner could be setting up the next song while the current one was still playing, and in the eight or so years we used the software we experienced not one crash ever. I don't wish to come across as a fanboi, but having been in live situation juggling a show, with all the anxiety and problems that hardware and software can throw at you, I know firsthand that stability and reliability are paramount.

My involvement in duos ended in the early 2000's, and have returned to the even more stressful situations of playing in a six piece band. I don't do any midi these days (all real live instruments) and I have not used SHOWPLAY since, but I checked out the website, and it is now in version 6.

Since my day, I see the price has risen considerably, but then so have the features and capabilities.

I realise I have strayed of topic a bit, but to return. Never gave up on Cakewalk and followed through to current SPLAT, with which I record the band and other acts. When others were jumping ship, I downloaded a couple of demos, but in the end, after opening up, I figured that I didn't want to relearn doing things I've done for 30 odd years. Besides, it's the best looking DAW out there.

Cheers

Thanks Optimus,
Had tried 'Showplay' demo a couple of times over the years ...ordered the dongle footswitch etc. A powerful system and well thought out but a bit complex or over the top for my needs. ..and as you said..........a tad pricey.

PS: Any more people wish to afford praise to most liked (As against disliked) aspects of Cakewalk /Sonar ?

Cheers

That's why it only took me 12 seconds after the shock of the first announcement to decide I was not going anywhere.
But I guess it all comes down to how you use your DAW and because Sonar sort of does everything you can think of,  the users here are all over the map from old 8 tracks dudes to rappers making beatz.

I'm like you with a long history of playing as a solo and a duo using midi created backing tracks. Starting with the Atari and  Dr T KCS in the early 80's and switching to a PC and Cakewalk around 2004.
The first thing I do when trying a new DAW is open a midi file and see what I can do to make it work. Some are terribly hopeless and you might as well still be using software from the 80's as far as features go.
At this point there is nothing I cannot do with midi in Sonar and I can edit a downloaded file or start from scratch and have something ready to go in a few hours. A huge feature for me is the ability to create midi bass parts from an Audio bass track. For the last 15 years all my backing tracks used real Bass, but each song sounds a little different as each time I used a different system to record them all.The solution is to make them all midi and use the same VST so all songs will sound the same.
