Yamaha ... Hsm50's, Hsm80's? or hold out for the new Msp7's ?

Well, I am currently running a pair of 1st gen KRK 5's and a missmatch sub.  It gives me a pretty decent idea of what's going on down low but lies it's butt off in the mids and upper mids.   I am looking to get a 2nd pair that will cover this region well for me and be fairly flat...  I am pretty sure I am going to stay with yamah at this point but I am not sure which yet.
Hsm50's seemed a bit brighter to me an may be just what need.
the 80's offer a bigger woofer which I would like, and still some nice upper end definition (this is where I am leaning)
but the new msp7's look pretty good to.  Kinda right in the middle.   Any ideas?  Experiances to share?

Thanks everybody for your opinions in advance!
-Chuck

I have Rokit-8s and I like them. I never want to compare them to some high end monitors though... I don't need that, laff.

I have some old Altec Lansing 18" Duplex speakers I want to wall mount, they have crossover controls etc. A lot of 60s records were mixed using these kind of speakers. I think sometimes about setting up my old 70 Sansui or Pioneer SX-1010 and the old speakers with the wood lattice front to compare with the monitors. I have both a Fisher-600 tube receiver and a Dynakit tube stereo and eventually want to get them set up for reference... but I like the Rokit-8s. I've never heard the Yamaha speakers but I have liked every Yamaha product I have ever owned starting with a Yamaha FG series acoustic guitar back in the 70s. Yamaha makes great products. I fully intend to buy one of the new Yamaha guitar/general purpose THR10 amps when they are released.

The Sam Ash store here and the GC both have listening rooms for monitors, I'd go there to see which one gave me the sound I want at the best price point then I'd shop online and ask for a discount... and I usually get one.

I A/B tested over a dozen pair of studio monitors in the recording room at our local Guitar Center. I did it with and without a sub. The Yamaha HS-80's were by far the most natural, transparent, and best sounding ones I listened to. I want to get the matching sub some day, just so it matches. I use a cheap $99 Sony now, but not always. I seem to do just as well without it.

I love my HS80M's nice flat, well rounded sound if that makes any sense. (Fuller spectrum maybe?)
No sub here either. I don't see the need for it yet.

Of course I'm coming off a set of Alesis M1 Active 620's.
    Whole different ball park.

For what it is worth, the MPS 7s are Ýama's monitor brand.  I haven't tested them side by side with the Hsm but the MPS's seemed flatter and less flattering.  At least one studio I worked in had the smaller MPS as their secondary monitors and they worked well with the main genlecs.

I kind of miss the mid sized 3 way set-ups of yesteryear. I think there would be a nice market for self powered 3 way monitors. I think there's few to choose from these days, but they're kind of expensive. A balanced self powered JBL century 100 is kind of what I'm thinking of.

Several Studio's around here are using the HSM 80's and like them a lot. Any mixes I hear from those studio's sound perfectly fine

I have tested them before and liked them they were just out of budget at the time.  My ears were also considerably less experianced in critical listening at the time (if you ask my wife... they still are!).
I found the hs50s harsh/bright though in retrospect  that may have been the revealing sound I am now missing.
The hs80s bright but they still had a nice low end and fairly balanced mids.
At the time I had about $300 to spend and that's a tough market to be really picky in.   The new krk5 g2's sounded low hyped to me, I remember not being impressed by the mackie stuff in the lower price range either.  I ended up with a used set of krk5 g1 that seemed less hyped.  I now find them (even though it's less so than the g2's) pretty bass hyped and lacking mid range detail.    So bettween my ears then telling me the hs80's sounded nice and balanced, and the charts looking pretty well balanced (though I know it goes off once the room gets a hold of it) I am thinking they may be the way to go.

I would like to think that I made the right purchase with the VXT 6's. Infact I think I did.

The Yamaha HSM80's sound good to me a real treat for the price I think that they have good bass and sound bright and busy. They work hard, what I have heard about them is that they translate well.

I like most people like bass but for the Yamaha's I dont think that a sub would be needed.

it's a good price range and I dont think you can go wrong with the Yam's

Well I do believe the VXT series are a significant step up from the rokits...  So I am sure you did just fine....  I am not saying the rokits are unusable.... they are, you just really need to learn them and be aware of where they are lying  to you so you can compensate.  I plan to keep them too, but I want a 2nd pair that I can hopefully trust a little more and bettween the two I should be able to make the right decisions without so many trips out to the vehicle to "test the mix".

I've been using the HS80m's for a little over a month now.  I really like these monitors as they translate very well to other systems.  My ears are not getting fatigued as they did with the Behringer Truth's that I used before.

I do a variety of musical styles from orchestra to prog rock and they work for all.

I have the HS80's and love them. I've had them for a few years right now and still love them. When I was shopping I went to several stores and a/b them. I still loved them the best...(I also have the HS-10 sub as well)

Now I think that they color the music just slightly. Color to the side of warmer. I'll never forget the day I heard my first NS-10's...I was working on the 80's an hour before and went to another studio and heard the NS-10's and went Oh My Freking goodness..(my body just shook with disbelief and not in a good way either).....I could not believe the difference...but I got used that their sound. and I understand why they sound that way..

As far as the MSP7's go...well I cannot help much there but my first monitors were the MSP 5's (which I still have) I still like them even if others do not....
Now based on the MSP 5's I have always thought about picking up a set of MSP7's. I would do it in a heart beat (if the price were right) and with out a second thought.

    Just my 2 cents.

I bought a pair of HS80M's over a year ago when they were on sale, and used a GC coupon which brought them down to $525 at that time. My other monitors (which I still have and use for a/b comparison of mixes) are Event 20/20's.  I really wanted a pair of JBL LSR 4326P's, but they were $500 more than the HS80M's and I did not have the cash.  It took me a good 3 months to get my ears to adjust to the HS80M's.  Now I absolutely love them.  As with any studio monitors, you will need to train your ear to the tonal characteristics.  Over a year after my purchase, I have no regrets getting the HS80M's
