Yamaha Montage

Tried a search and couldn't find anything on it. Anyone here use the Montage with SONAR?  Can you share any good stories. or nightmares?

I don't have one, but I suspect it would be great.
I have an old S-90 and it works perfectly as does my newer Arturia KeyLab-88,
but I'm not doing anything with instrument definitions.

Shouldn't be any different than using any other conventional outboard synth. The only downside might be that the Montage is too new to go out and find an instrument definition file for it, but that's no big deal.

OK, the Montage does have one other drawback. You need a hand truck to move the durn thing, lest you injure your back.

I purchased a Montage 6 at Sweetwater's Gearfest last summer and absolutely love it. I have other synths but find that this is my go to synth.  Works just fine with Sonar.

The Motif played nice.  The Tyros series has quirks for using with a sequencer (although it does work).

I think the Montage is descended from the Motif line.  Of course, we need someone who's actually used it to answer.

@Bitflipper, I got the Montage6 so not as much back strain with that one.  ;)

Xray2, congrats on the new purchase.  It is an amazing instrument.  I bought the Motif XF8(WH) a couple years ago.  I decided on the XF8 because my previous master keyboard was the Korg Triton but found myself mostly going to my Motif Rack for patches.  So moving to the XF8 as an upgrade was a no-brainer.  Secondly, I found the expressiveness of the weighted keys to be far and above the competition's.  The one issue I've had with the XF8 is never being able to take advantage of the DAW controller functions.  It has been a huge frustration for me as I tried to follow Yamaha's instructions which seemed to be too vague and Sonar didn't have anything for this specific instrument.

I do plan to eventually upgrade to the Montage 8 though.  If you have already been able to take advantage of the Montage to provide some level of DAW control, could you let us know how easy/difficult is was?  Also, if you are able to find instrument definitions, it would be great if you could post a link here.  Thanks!

I haven't tried it yet, (too many projects going on) but take a look at this: https://yamahasynth.com/forum/instrument-definition-for-montage

Yeah, even a good synth/rompler has a hard time competing with the best software synthesizers and computer-based samplers in terms of cost or sound quality.

There are, however, plenty of valid reasons for using one, either as an alternative to or in conjunction with soft synths. Zero-latency monitoring. Tactile feedback. Aftertouch. A better MIDI controller than most MIDI controllers. Zero-CPU overhead tone generators and effects. And no hardware synth ever crashed a DAW, became incompatible with the computer's O/S, or suddenly refused to run because a software license got lost.

I can see that. I use a stage piano for most of my midi input, I like that it has its own piano sound. But in the price class of Montage? 3k buys a pretty nice midi controller and a whole bunch of expensive sound libraries/synths besides. Though I guess you wouldn't have a super knob.

To each his own, I didn't mean to poop the OP's party, I didn't realize he already bought one. It's definitely a nice board!

Well, I went ahead and bought a Montage. I can say that, right out of the box (no driver installations or anything) SONAR does pick some things, like Super Knob and Scene changes. Finding where those are in order to tweak or change them though, is a mystery.

I've been using Montage with Sonar for about a year. I don't understand what you mean by "Sonar does pick some things, like Super Knob and Scene changes." Although I haven't used Scene changes with Sonar, you can easily manipulate the Super Knob with CC messages.

    Howdy Wally,

What I meant was it would record any scene changes I made while playing, and on playback would make them as I go.
