Yamaha Motif XS editor won't work in Sonar

Hi all,

I now have a Motif rack module in the setup which works fine using its midi I/O interface.
Having looked at the Motif editor I downloaded the latest version and the Motif driver for completeness.
The editor is inserted as a VST3 and displays correctly within Sonar, but midi data from my keyboard does not reach the the module. Midi data shows up on the X3 bargraph but never reaches the module.
Yamaha have sent me a couple of setup emails, but neither made any difference. I wanted Yamaha to take a look with Teamview but they don't want to do that!!

Anyone else using the Motif in Sonar with problems - or maybe problem free?

All suggestions welcome .....before I ditch the thing in frustration! My Integra 7 and its editor work faultlessly!!

I had a similar problem with the Yamaha MOX editor and I'm assuming it's the same issue for the Motif editor.

When the editor is fully working, it will receive MIDI from the DAW, route it to the Yamaha, have the Yamaha audio come back into it and output the audio.  So it works very much like a virtual instrument.  Unfortunately, this only fully works in Cubase.

    There is a workaround though.
    1) Create a Folder (Optional)
    2) Insert the VST editor.  You will only use this for configuring the Motif.  You will not be sending any MIDI to it or receiving any audio through it.
    3) Create a MIDI track for each MIDI channel you want to send to the Motif.  Send each of them to the appropriate MIDI channel on the MOTIF hardware (not the VST plugin)
    4) Create an audio track for each output you want from the Motif hardware (not the VST plugin).  The MOX had 2 stereo outputs so I created 2 stereo audio tracks but that might be different with the MOTIF.

So basically you are using the VST editor plugin to edit and store the configuration of the MOTIF in your project, but not as an actual "Instrument".

Personally, I found it was a pain in the butt to use the MOX as an instrument my DAW and just decided to use VST software instruments instead when I'm using the computer.  So much easier.

I now have a Korg Kronos and I use that as a standalone music production system. . . not with my DAW unless I want to record the output of the Kronos.

Cant you edit your Motif free-standing? Why would you need it in Editor? I have XS since 2008 and I never needed an editor- I use it as my main MIDI controller for all software instruments as well.

    Hi rlared,

Thanks for that, I'll give it a try. Damn nuisance having to find a work-around though. Yamaha support are so inferior to Roland - especially so when it's a porblem with their software.

Hi viadasyn. I can of course edit the XS directly on its front screen, however with my DAW screen in front of me but the XS is 180 deg behind me in a rack, so I'm constantly "rotating". Having the XS editor window on the DAW screen would give me far greater control and make life so much easier! After all that's what it is supposed to be for isn't it?

    Thanks both for responding
