Ye Old Tune

Right after the Thanksgiving dinner, my nephew (on acoustic) who is 14 yrs. old, and just started taking lessons, my sister-in-law on percussion (on the synth), and me on mandolin, banged this very short piece out for fun. We all sat around the AKG c414, set in omni mode, rehearsed for about 10 minutes and recorded this. They don't know that I'm posting this. I know it's short and I'm not sure what to do with this, but I wanted to post it anyways. ( maybe I'm bored)

    Well, Larry,
That was fun. Just last night, my daughter asked if I could teach her to play guitar, and we discussed the prospect of having her sing on some projects. What you guys did is something that I hope is in the future here.
You know I am a sucker for a minor key. I like your nephew's Marilyn Manson acoustic "noodle" mixed with the troubador mandolin and percussion. Has a sort of Tim Burton feel to it. It's actually giving me some ideas, but I am digging into out Moonlight project at the moment.
Keep us posted if you decide to run with this. In the meantime, it's on the back burner here.

Real Goth vibe on the acoustic riff and the mandolin just seals it...way cool.

Hey, this could be an intro and maybe also an outro for something..........that would be cool. I'd also leave the talking part in at the beginning. Sounds like a job the "The Slow Marching Band" to me!!!

Larry, how cool is that !!? An acoustic "family portrait' kind of thing. I bet your nephew was jazzed to have this recorded. Maybe you could schedule several jams and put together a little audio record of your nephew's progress. It would be a treasure when he is older no doubt. Mix sounds great too, you have that micing stuff dialed in pretty well. Good job.

That' really nice Larry. I bet your nephew is 'well chuffed' (as we say) about this, imagine how he'd feel if you incorporated this into a full blown tune....

Thanks everyone! Alex & Ann will be stoked about your responses! I'll keep this on the back-burner. It sounds like a prelude that will be fitting for a much heavier piece to follow. Hellloooo Jaaammeesss!

Larry, that's just not fair, teasing us like that. Tell your family they're going to have to develop this further, tell' em it's by popular demand. That's a great start, I'd love to hear you add lyrics and more instruments. Back to work!

Larry, what a nice piece. I enjoyed it, as short as it was, but it had style. Thanks for sharing this. It's always nice to have family members doing music with you, eh?

Very cool Larry - I just danced a jig in my office while listening. I really hope none of my co-workers saw me! It's always fun and rewarding to hear the fruits of your labor, especially when you're just starting out. I have a 5-month old son and every time he reaches for my bass or guitar or keyboard, I just think to myself "man, I can't wait until he starts playing one of them (and stops spitting up on them!). Anyway, I can't wait to hear the full-length version!

Larry, this is exactly what real music is all about: impromptu, simple and participatory. Home-made entertainment the way it used to be before amplification, synthesis, parametric equalizers and 15:1 compression ratios. I hope you'll reconvene the group at Xmas and finish the song. This could be a major turning point in your nephew's life, you never know.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Larry, That must have been some fun. I don't know how common it is to have other family members with musical talent, but what a great way to spend time together.

I love your microphone. I just checked it out online, no wonder is sounds nice, it's not cheap!

Tell your nephew and sister-in-law that they did a great job, and should be humbled to have played in the presense Larry Kenobi!

Thanks for the comments gents! It was fun to have family gathered around the mic and do this. Later on I had all the kids bang on the instruments in an obnoxious way and make vocal noises, and they got the biggest kick out of it! I hope my nephew will decide to stick it out with playing guitar. When my sons were younger, I bought them instruments that they expressed a desire to play. After a short stint, they decided it wasn't meant to be. So, I'm projecting my rock n' roll fantasies on my nephew for the moment!! BTW - DO NOT have 3-4 yr. old kids after they have eaten, along with snotty noses, play your cherished instruments! You'll be cleaning them for days!
