Ye olde Dimension Pro 64 bit run as Administrator Bug + Please upgrade the forums software
Dear Cakewalk For a very very long time (maybe 4 or 5 years?) it seems that Dimension Pro 64 bit can only run with user Administrator permissions in Win 7 64 bit/Sonar X1c 64 bit (check posts all over the forums). Could we finally fix this irritation for X1d pretty please? Bypassing Windows 7 security model really isn't very good practice. Running Sonar X1 "as Administrator" really isn't a workaround in professional and secure environments. Many thanks Alex p.s. Apols if you've read this before.... but please upgrade your ASPPlayground.NET Forums software from 3.5. to 3.9. The old version you run is NOT firefox friendly. There are a huge numbers of Firefox users, and it is the second or third most popular browser available (depending on who you believe).

In addition I notice that applications with "Run As Administrator" set up won't execute with autorun (Windows 7 on startup), I'm more concerned however with Sonar and/or offically distributed Plugins not obeying the Windows security model rather than two extra clicks upon startup.

I have Sampletank loaded on my 64 bit PC, and Windows always asks me about giving it access to its files. I would love to hear more about this! Brian

One can go in to the file properties by right clicking on the exe or dll and setting the security for that file. After that one shouldn't get any popups.

> For some reason, I am thinking that this is a limitation that Windows has imposed? Generally it's down to two things: 1) The application/plugin is writing to a folder or file where it does not have permission to write (i.e. it's writing to the wrong location). 2) The application/plugin is writing to a secure part of the registry where it does not have permission to write (i.e. the wrong part of the registry). Why? - So different applications do not tread on each others toes, so only certain users can get access to certain applications, and as a great preventative measure against viruses. In the days of Windows 95 etc Windows really didn't care where applications wrote their files and registry settings. e.g. Windows .INI files were stored all over the place allowing other unauthorised applications to read them (not cool). Things have changed a lot since then, there should be absolutely no excuse for modern applications not writing settings/files in their correct areas and locations. In a nutshell APPLICATIONS SHOULD OBEY THE WINDOWS SECURITY MODEL !!!!

I'm thinking that the explanation from the Sampletank folks says something about Windows not allowing access to x64 folders, which is where the 64 bit files are intended to be written. So is that IK wanting to write stuff where it shouldn't, or is it Windows being overly paticular? Brian

And I use it on WIN 7 x64 without any problems. I turn UAC off and have no problem with Admin privileges.

Yup 1.5.0.11. This application shouldn't need Administrator privileges (that's the point of the post ) and it's been a long time in fixing. In the meantime we all do the workarounds we need to do in order to get around this design flaw.... Cheers and thanks...
