Thanks Guys, and thanks Yorolpal...lol.
Oh Antti, I didn't write the rhythm section...so bass and drums...but my friend at the time would have used pretty generic Logic sounds. Probably a 303 clone, I'm not sure about drums. But what makes the drums and bass stand out is the Tape Emulator, Helios Console EQ, and that sort of stuff...fattening the transients is the trick for this sort of stuff.
The lead stuff, including the vocal is all mine. The first lead line is a Moog clone, which I played...rather than sequenced ;). I've also used the cut-off and resonance or played these to get the lead sound. The other lead sound is a DX7 clone, again played by me. Both have a bit of bathroom verb for space. There is also a sonic ping...the life support machine, and I think this was the first VST instrument ever...The Neon by Steinberg.
There is a generous smattering of granular delay on vocals, and probably some of the lead lines. But it's a combination of everything that creates this sort of track. Take away my lead stuff, and the track is just a generic drum and bass sort of clone...not very interesting. I actually also structured the track, so it tells a story...or at least it has a start, a middle and an end. And that was the final thing I did, which was varispeed the end, but keep the pitch...so I sped the ending up slightly...giving it a certain feel...yes George Martin taught me well. RIP George.
But the real star of the track, is the fatness of the transients...and thats all to do with tape and console emulation.
