Yes synth sound on a "It Will be a Good Day"

I was wondering if anyone knows what synth is used in the beginning part of "It will be a Good Day" from the Yes CD called "The Ladder"? It's like a pad I guess, but it has an almost "sample and hold" kind of thing going on.

It's hard to describe what it sounds like, but must be some cool kind of modulation in there, maybe someone knows how to fake that with something like Wusikstation or other similar synth?

Thanks ahead of time

it's sounds more like a swell or a texture pad going on.. hhm does sound like chords, so the basic sound is probably a bit more simpler.

    this is a later version..

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1FMjUAssvQ
sounds different.. maybe it's the same patch , but not altered in a studio.

the thing is it was out in 1999

    http://www.discogs.com/release/1085799

so discount any synths that post date it.. although I notice in their earlier stuff they use moogs.. like many more.. but obviously that's far earlier albums from the 70's.

if it was released earlier there would be far less synths to choose from.hehe

maybe they are fans of the prophet 5, it reminds me of a sound on that, but hey what do I know, could be any number (a silly number) of synths.

Thanks for the info, I might just try searching thorugh the zillions of pads in Wusik till I find some thing a little bit similar, then tweek it to see if I can get it almost the same.

well as I said before there's a patch that reminds me a LOT of the sound of one in pro53.

A lot of my friends keep what they use patch wise / synth wise a big secret... maybe you could ask them directly, and they might tell you.. give a try anyway..

not sure about Wusik as I don't own it.

"...maybe you could ask them directly" ...you mean ask YES, or my friends? (hehe)

Sometimes I feel I 've known them my whole life, well, ok.. ok, I DO have all their CDs but no email address to write them at

I have the Lite version of the Pro53 that came with Acid 5, not sure if is included in that version, but will check tonight.

they have a myspace / web site?

people / bands are a lot easier to contact these days, my friend in quite a well known group does like hearing from people who enjoy their music. Although if you'd ask him for what equipment he uses for their stuff he'd not reply.hehe

I know from visiting what they use in their studio, but I'd not let on to anyone.

At first listen, it sounds a lot like the big massive swirling tinkly sound that starts off the Close to the Edge album (which leads us to a tougher question... how did they make that big massive swirly tinkly sound back in '72?)

After checking out Fog's link of the live show in 99
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1FMjUAssvQ
it looks & sounds like he's playing chords through some sort of ping pong digital delay effect. We don't get a good look at the keyboard (on his far left, top) until the very end... Yamaha DX-7.

As for how to re-create it... funny, I just did something like it yesterday. I used a regular Rhodes piano & played a fast arpeggio, tracked it 3 times on top of itself with a different tempo each time, panned all over the place. The result... big massive swirling tinkly sound... sorta... I'd love to hear your solution!

well Rick Wakeman was the keyboard player on that? (he was born about 20 minutes from where I live, obviously long before I was thought of)

    http://www.discogs.com/release/756776

and we know he's a big fan of the moog's

you might find this funny http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9kvtGSaw0k

and he did another demo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXpA3zw1hS4&feature=related

(but I'm sure the oscar was a bit later)

and the moog was out from 70's onward... so I'm guessing maybe if the sound is a LOT fuller , either multiple moogs, or layered on the tape in the studio. the choice of synths was far fewer then, so that makes it a bit easier to figure I guess.. moogs were from 1970 onward?

as for the dx7, tricky.. I mean he could have been triggering a stash of modules with it, or even a vst.hehe

I used to always see korg m1's in lots of studios I went , but people I know just used them to trigger the sampler... the juno 106 and jd800 got much more use on their own.

Igor Khoroshev was the keyboard player on that album. Among other things, he used 2 Yamaha AN1X physical modelling synths in his live rig with Yes. ( I had one for awhile) Those are capable of all sorts of trippy sounds, but he could've used anything on the studio recording. The AN1X was produced in the late 90's, so the AN1X was around at the time and would've been a new synth to exploit. Could be a lot of things though.

...also Igor did some of the MIDI demos that shipped with later versions Cakewalk Pro Audio and early versions of Sonar. I believe the demo files had his email address in the "Info" section so maybe you CAN ask him!

I knew he was the keyboardist at that time, but didn't know he used that synth.
    Thanks for the info!
