Yet another can-you-hear-the-difference test

http://www.npr.org/sections/therecord/2015/06/02/411473508/how-well-can-you-hear-audio-quality

I got 100% - picked the uncompressed wave every time.

Or at least I would have if I'd been able to handle listening to Jay Z. There's a limit to what one will do in the name of science.

Do I have golden ears? Hell, no. I'm almost 64 years old. So how did I get them all correct? A slow internet connection.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I tried and couldn't do diddley. Between the electric fan and the window shaker I can barely hear. I'll have to wait another month before I can get into audio again.

4/6 for me. hen I was wrong I picked the 320kbps.

The wrongs were JayZ and the Mozart piece.

I'm uncultured at both ens of the spectrum

I'm pretty sure this was the same test that was done about a year ago.

I think I only got 3/6 then. Can I conclude that my guessing is improving?

Me too, Baps. I have trouble separating the 328 kbps samples from the wav files.

2 out of 6, and honestly, they were guesses. I assume my hearing is gone.

I was surprised to get them all right except for the Suzanne Vega one, for which I picked the 320kbps file instead of the wav. I had thought that an unaccompanied voice would make it more obvious, but there you go. The secret of my success was in trying to mentally filter out everything except the high frequencies and concentrate on them. I picked whichever one had more brilliant and defined high freqs.

    sharke,

    I focused on the bass.

And since the JazzyG was synth bass that was hard one.

The classical piece, for me, was hard..... just because.

I can normally hear a great difference in bass quality when it's between two MP3's of different bit rates, but in choosing between 320kbps and wav I dunno, I think I hear it more in the highs.

    No bass?

Weird. I had a 4/6 and the Jay Z piece got me too, but I do not listen for an instrument when listening to music, more often than not ... to me, even Jimi would not be that good if his "orchestrating" of his instrument was not right. And too many folks, specially in prog, take advantage of that and forget the orchestration of the piece ... while I like Dream Theater, I find this the weakest part of their work ... it has to have the flash moments, and it dilutes the music.

That's how I see it more often than not. It was the same type of comments I made to Bapu years ago, about how I heard the first CHB piece.

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Well, I just confirmed why my entire library is done at 192 kbps and why I'm happy with it at that level.

I'm gonna wait till tomorrow and listen in the mix room. Bet I don't even hear music playing. Just voices inside my head.

Maybe, but are those voices compressed or not?

They are limited with a WAVES L1. I cannot detect any overs. But when they are speaking I can't distinguish what anyone else "on the outside world" is saying to me. As if that mattered. The message is always the same.

That was too easy.  Of course...DISCLAIMER...I was listening in the voiceover control room which is expertly monitored and treated.  So really not very fair.  It would've been much tougher on my office laptop or...gawd forbid...my crummy iPad.

PS: I also agree with Bit regarding JayZ.  Sheesh.
