Yet even more praise for Sonar X1 Power!

This is my third book purchase from Scott Garrigus and I was not disappointed.  In fact I'm so happy with this book that I'm writing this post even knowing that I might get bashed for repeating what's already been said 100 times before.

I've had this book for about four hours now and I've already learned 3 important things, 5 "good to know" things, and at least a dozen little helpful hints.  And this from just skimming through the book.

The usual shpiel:  Great for beginners, the author assumes you know how to turn on a computer and know the basic mouse commands, that's it.  From there he takes us from a simple explanation to what MIDI is and what you can do with it, all the way to Cakewalk Application Language (CAL).  Most people here can probably skip a couple of chapters (although it's nice for a refresher course), but even the seasoned pros can learn something about how X1 is laid out and about all the new features and customizations.   And for me, I much prefer a printed manual to have near my workstation, as opposed to a PDF file.

Only a couple of things I wished for.  (but almost too minor to mention) - I would have liked a little section on setting up the GUI on multiple monitors.  But I did learn how to create a blank template (when selecting File: New) and have the GUI setup exactly how I like it on my two monitors.  I was disappointed to learn that the screensets are only saved within each project.  But having a template ready to go is easier than opening two projects and importing a screenset from one project to the next.

I also kind of wished that Scott would have been a little more "ballsy" and come out and say something like, "this feature or plugin pretty much sucks, just don't use it".  He does do that in a very subtle way for a few items, but it would be nice to hear from an expert what features not to bother with.

Anyway, bottom line, Scott writes some of the best technical training books I've ever read, and this latest one is no exception.  And I believe Amazon is having a sale, you can get it for a lot cheaper than the suggested retail price.

Thank you Scott - you are da man!

Hey Lee... wow! Thanks very much for such a glowing review. I appreciate your support and glad to hear you're getting so much out of the book.

What info about multiple monitor setups were you interested in? Just curious...

Yeah, I try not to be too judgmental about different features (except when I'd like to see something added or changed) because so many people use SONAR... some like certain features and find a use for them and others don't. I have to accommodate everyone who reads the book. But I hear what you're saying.

If you have a chance... would it be possible for you to post a review over at Amazon and in the Cakewalk Store for the book?

    Thanks again!

Pre-ordering mine from Amazon UK (though one seller seems to have it available in the UK already even though Amazon say it's officially not, so it might be an import). Looks like a great book!

    Hey Scott,
Yeah, I was planning to post a review over at Amazon today

As for the mention about dual monitors, it just seemed that it warranted at least a small mention, since a lot of people do use multiple monitors these days and Sonar is practically crying out for dual monitor usage.  My biggest gripe (before reading your book) was trying to figure out how to have the GUI set up the way I like it (on two screens) when starting a new song/project.  And with all the new "one click" customizations, it seemed almost tedious to have to move and readjust the windows every time I started something new.  It took me awhile to realize that Screensets were only saved with an individual project, so I gave up on that new feature pretty quickly.

But I'm being nitpicky, because if someone were to ask me what was missing from the book, that would be the only thing I could come up (except maybe a tutorial on how to write hit songs ;-)

Thanks again for all your work!

Yeah, Screensets are a little tricky at first, especially because they are per-project, rather than global. It would definitely be nice if we could at least save them as separate files to make importing easier.
(except maybe a tutorial on how to write hit songs ;-)

Okay, I'll get that done asap...

    Thanks!

The wait for the Kindle version is getting painful... on the other hand, I'm learning a lot on my own, so there's that. But I could still use the boost and I can't quite brook paying postage to Germany - Amazon.de doesn't have it in stock yet over here, and the price is actually MORE in euro than the US$ price, despite the euro being currently worth $1.44 and climbing daily (argh).

So yeah, if you can drop a hint to the publisher and/or Amazon that there are sales they aren't making...

OK, despite my terrible allergic reaction to actually reading books (they're so last century ), I broke down and ordered this today.  Trial and error has gotten me far enough to... well, basically drive me nuts.  So based on the rave reviews about this book, seems like the smartest investment I could make at this point.

you mean the Bible?  The book is pretty indispensable (at least for me) moving from ProAudio-Sonar3-7-8-8.5 to the Xfiles.  The one thing that really stumped me for a while was 'selecting' (pg93).  Maybe I'm just doing things differently, but the MOST important function has always been (for me) to set the start and end point of the selection, which you used to do with F9 F10.  In fact, I have had to replace keyboards because F9 F10 wore out.  What I found, and what is missing from page 93, is Shift-F6, which apparently replaces F9 F10.  Someone else posted some (what I felt was) nonsence about Shift-Alt-Ctrl-whatever which didn't work, and cause me some worry about canning X1 and going back to 8.5 because at least there I could work.

Shift-F6 functionality is SO important to me that I've actually circled the key with a marker so I can see it when the lights are low.

I don't know why this wasn't in the book.  Nor do I understand why folks other than me apparently did not use the hell out of F9 F10 like I always have.  Mystery!!

    Hey Robert,

Thanks very much! I don't know if SONAR X1 Power! will help you overcome your allergic reaction to books, but I hope it will help provide a more structure learning process for X1... and I hope you enjoy it.

    Hey Greg,

Thanks for your support! I appreciate it... and I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the new book.

Actually, Shift+F6 is in there, but not on page 93. That section of the book deals with tracks, not data. And Shift+F6 (or Select By Time, as it's called) is for selected data. You'll find it on page 147.

    Thanks!

    Hey Richard,

Thanks very much! No, I'm sorry. There is no PDF version because that is an unprotected format. The book, will be available in eBook form via Amazon Kindle, which can be viewed on a variety of devices as well as the Mac and PC. It should be released soon.
