Yoko Ono is suing my local pub - No Really !!!

Interesting stuff.

It was on the news on television as I was having dinner which I nearly spat out.

It appears Yoko has taken umbridge to the name of the bar (Lennon's) along with the John Lennon memorabilia contained within. Thing is, I really see the bar's endevaours to pay respect to John Lennon's memory and his music as being thoughtful, thus promting fond reflection on one oour country's musical heroes. I guess Yoko sees otherwise.  Money can't buy you love, but it can sure buy Lawyers.

This is just as bad as around 10 years ago when the London Underground made another bar in Dundee (The Underground) change its name after threats to sue them. We also had a radio station called Discovery 102 until the Discovery channel threatened to sue. They had to rename themselves too.

The world's gone mad. Mad I tell you!

Mzzz Ono should be proud of her contribution to the world of music.  Now when a girl gets involved with a band member and it causes issues with the other members she's called a "Yoko."

Although the article says the claim is infringement of copyright, in the U. S. at least, it would seem to be more of a trademark issue. Whether Yoko even is aware of the threatened suit is dubious. Typically these threats are generated by agencies paid to aggressively defend trademarks, since failure to do so can cause the trademark to become unenforceable. The agencies scour the news public records etc. for mention of trademarks and then fire off letters threatening dire consequences if the offenders do not desist. The agency would not typically own the trademark, and so must use the name of the trademark holder to sue. The trademark may be licensed to another entity altogether other than Yoko, who presumably inherited it with John's death. In that case she may have sold her right to object to such aggressive bullying in a clause that commits her to assisting the licensee in defense of the mark.

Or it could be she is an all-seeing greedy **** who hates pubs.

My understanding is that if you want to maintain a trademark, you have to enforce it.
