Yorkshire Puddings

In my opinion one must always make one's own and Aunt Bessies are horrible.

Now, the debate is whether they should only be served with roast beef or with any roast joint?

And what kind of sausages make the best toad in the hole?

And is it really rude to serve them with onion gravy to a vegetarian?

    Correct, but they're a nightmare to get right.

    Nope, just as nice with pork or lamb

    And what kind of sausages make the best toad in the hole?

    I like something with a little tang to it - maybe pork & wholegrain mustard?

    And is it really rude to serve them with onion gravy to a vegetarian?

    Of course not, they can always eat the 'hole'

    twig.. iceland was doing them the other week... 16 for the price of 12... errm £1 or £1.50 can't recall.. not bad.

    to be honest, they are just batter anyway, and although people say they are easy to make..well less effort to buy em part made.

    you mean you have to have em with beef? haha.. I have em with roast chicken etc.

    onion gravy hhmm dunno not a big fan.. If they are veggie , give em a raw potato or carrot crunch

    as for sausages in general the more meat content the better, you should be looking at 60-70% +.. some have content as low as 25%. Me I am a big fan of Linconshire ones (tesco butcher choice ones) BUT they are good if you cook them slowly.

    Not really.

    Whisk the batter until there is a lot of air in the batter and then let it stand for 20 minutes in the fridge - this is the most important part.

    Use smoking beef dripping in your tray and pour the mixture in steadily to the centre of the tray. 20 minutes in a hot oven and robert is your father's brother.

    * try getting the contents of the tin out first in one piece after cooking.. or I must be jinxed with them. Don't get me started on the recycler's not wanted to take them back though when they are left out in the bin

    I have one maybe every hhmm 2 months... they never list the salt / fat properly like other things where it shows the RDA's etc content for a very good reason..

    you used to be able to buy them jumbo sized yorkshire puddings a while ago, not seem em in shops recently.

    Mark, have you ever had Yorkshire pudding? it's not a desert.. although I hear some people used it as one with fruit etc

    Cakewalk has it's very own Yorkshire man though, alas I never see him presenting the tutorial videos in a flat cap , maybe he has knowledge.

    Oh M you can, if it's Yorkshire Pud.......... but what you must not do is to confuse the taste buds in the main course / pudding / dessert sequence, this is unforgiveable, I'll let one of Yorkshire's finest explain - here

    To get back to this vital topic

    "In my opinion one must always make one's own and Aunt Bessies are horrible."
    A valid opinion, Twiggy, but consider the Aunt Bessies MINI Yorkshire Puds, only 4 mins in the oven and no prep time

    "Now, the debate is whether they should only be served with roast beef or with any roast joint?"
    Now, yes, roast beef the perfect culinary companion, but can be served with roast chicken or pork in an emergency situation, an example of this being having unexpected guests for dinner (usually mates chucked out by their wives) and a need to "bulk up" on quantity

    "And what kind of sausages make the best toad in the hole?"
    A sausage of firm consistency which offers similar resistance to the knife as the cooked batter itself. Tastewise, I consider a peppery taste to be appropriate, perhaps a quality Lincolnshire. Cumberland a strict no no due to inapprpropriate girth for the presentation in batter

    "And is it really rude to serve them with onion gravy to a vegetarian?"
    Always best to ask in advance, have a pack of Bisto vegatarian gravy powder in reserve, if not used throw away and replace every year.

    Good post Twiggy, it's important to revisit these standards every now and then and encourage debate

    Best Regards

    sod that, you have a spare tin of mushrooms... and toast... someone I know paid £25 that in a swanky hotel resturant (the mug)... if they don't like the out of date bisto sod em... just say it's a limited edition flavor

    then go around their house and expect top of the range meat dishes.. only fair... of course free range etc.

    Where do Bisto get their vegetarians in order to make vegetarian gravy in the first place? I haven't seen that product in my Tesco. I think it would be worth buying a dozen just for the satisfaction of throwing away a vegetarian each month.

    "Thanks for the dinner invite. Err, I'm not sure that I mentioned that my wife and I were meat eaters. Anyway don't make a fuss, just a little fillet steak medium rare would be fine."

    "Actually I'd already got some Fray Bentos Steak and Kidney pie in a tin for you both"

    "Oh dear, I've just remembered we're both doing our toenails that night"

    Exactly, at least 20-40% better than the best.

    Not only that the only set of rules that I got from either of them was this, set down as immutable truth and ignored at my peril.

    Beef = Yorkshire Pud.
    Lamb = Mint Sauce
    Pork = Apple Sauce
    Chicken = Sage and Onion stuffing

    Turkey (only to be eaten at Christmas) = Cranberry Sauce and Bacon or Cocktail Sausages.

    Anything less is the complete erosion of a cultural identity which has been led by the idle and careless flibberdygibbet young brides of the Supermarket generation.

    And you'll not find any yoggit muck in my fridge or that muesli nonsense either....that's what hippies graze on!

    Whatever next?

    Toad in the Hole you will need these...

    As an alternative as these may be scarce in your neck of the woods, Co-Op's butchers choice currently would be acceptable.

    As for it being rude to serve vegetarians Onion gravy...just tell them it's rude to be a vegetarian and if they are hungry they'll get on with the perfectly good food that is put in front of them and be thankful for it or go without.

    Don't know about Yorkshire pudding. Kinda sounds nice, but Brit puddings put me off - what is it ya'll serve for breakfast? Blood pudding or something? The stuff that looks like burnt cork (and tastes the same) beside the tomato? Man, that stuff is scary. And when you stay at a B&B they insist on putting it on your plate no matter how many mornings you leave it on the plate. Like they are daring you to eat it this time.

    Veggie sauce is always cream mixed with pesto that is heated through. However I'm not a veggie, it just happens that this is what I make for them on a Sunday when we're all stuffing our faces with every face food imaginable Hmmmmm !!!!

    Anyway, Animals can always run away from the slaughter, where as plants and veggies can't, now thats what I call cruelty, imagine not having even the slimmest of sporting chances.
