You Better Move In (Aug. 8th)

For better or for worse, here's a song called "You Better Move In." I hope you like it (at least it's shorter than the others!)

Usually when I listen to people's songs here, I can hear which musician had influenced them (at least I think I do).
Your music is so original tho that I can't think of anyone much similar except maybe Kate Bush?
Anyway, I really liked this song. Nicely harmonized vocal and a really cool foot stomping bass line.  I wasn't sure about the hand clapping at first, but you varied it enough to make it interesting.

this song is all about the vocals and bass. at least in this mix. the drums are very much in the background, which I suspect is cos they are a very modern sounding kit which wouldn't necessairly fit with this track. the way you track your vocals with the the old widening delay effect is so fantastic but that does take up a lot of sonic space. the mix overall sounds quite narrow in the main i think cos the centre vocal and bass are so up in the mix, and the vocal is very close. another great tune of course. i'd try to somehow let the mix breathe a little, maybe a bit more verb on the vocal and widen the guitars a little, bring up the drums...what do I know?

mgh, thank you for that very useful and, I think, accurate analysis of the mix. I'm off to try to improve it now, using your advice ... see you later :)

Cool tune Laura! Your mixes are getting fuller and fuller. I'd suggest thinking about  carving out space for each instrument for your next one. For example, in this one, the bass is quite large, which is fine because it is an important element of the song, but you'll notice that it feels crowded by the guitars, and the kick drum loses focus. I'd also suggest that you are maybe overdoing the compression just a touch. If you aren't using a compressor/limiter, then are you still running your songs through Landr?

    Regards,

    Laura does electric guitar!

Like your previous songs it's so non-typical in chord progression, arrangement and melody. And yet it still manages to sound just like you.   It's got the LJ stamp for sure.

teh mix balance is much better in this one. Unfortunately the electric guitar is over-gained and a bit crunchy which doesn't quite gel with the rest. i think dcumpian is right, it's mix compression which is affecting the guitar as well as the cymbals at times. but as a whole mix to me this sounds much better.

Ditto... overall it just sounds "cleaner" and each element seems better defined within the mix.

What's the high ringing sound that happens at 8 sec's and rings to about 12 secs ? a finger bell ?  a triangle ?

Hi, Kenny! There aren't any finger bells or triangles, so I'm not sure what you mean, unless it's clapping? There's also a note that I'm repeating quickly on acoustic guitar at that point and variations on that throughout - maybe that's it? I'm sorry if it's annoying you - maybe it wasn't the best idea.

    Hi Laura ,
Over here , when I play your song at a moderately loud level in my monitors at around 8 seconds there is a high pitched sound that sounds just like a percussive hit that takes up in the high end spectrum of your tune ...
Right speaker ..it happens right when you say "want too" ...right after / around the" too "part ...
It lasts for a few seconds and it It sounds just like it is ringing ...could it be a conversion  artifact ?

Hey Laura, you're one of the better singer/songwriters to ever grace this forum.  Please, please don't be lured into worrying about every little nit here and there that others will point out (of course, unless it's something that's impeding the demo's ability to present your song).  It always reminds me of the old saying  "Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?"

Your demos sound more than fine and allow listeners access to your unique artistry. :)

here, here!  Which brings up one of the essential elements of great songwriting:  empathy.  AND,  how do you get thick skin while at the same time actually caring about others!  It's a catch 22.  Keep creating, please!  Additionally,  if a composition is compelling what difference does the fidelity make  (as long as it's within reason)?  :D:D

    Hi Laura ,
I think there may be a missed signal happening here between us  ....
    FWIW ,
I have listened to every version of your song as it has undergone all the various adjustments you have made .
I'm not looking to find fault with your Music ...emotionally it may feel that way ..but that is not my intent ...
For all I know what I'm hearing could be your next door neighbors microwave going off while you were recording a part of your song while using a microphone  .... I hear it just like I've heard car doors slamming and dogs barking when I record over here using a mic .
Lets try to get past it I'm not attacking you

As far as your creativity and your Music goes , I am truly  a fan of what you do and I happen to hold you in very high esteem ...

    all the best,

    Hi again Kenny,

I'm embarrassed and confused that I can't identify the irritating sound you mean, but I never thought that you were attacking me, just that I was a dumbbell for not being able to figure out what you were referring to!

You were the one who talked me into having the nerve to post here in the first place, and for that and for your continued support I will always be truly grateful - it's been a giant step for me and I'm still floundering in many ways while I struggle to adjust to the idea that anybody besides me would ever listen to or even want to listen to anything I do.

Allan (ABull), your support and encouragement has also been fantastic and very, very much appreciated. Like you say, having a songwriter who knows what he's doing on your side can be wonderfully uplifting. Sometimes I think you must have ESP because your comments come so close to replying to my thoughts.

eph221, speaking of perceptive comments, your reply a few posts ago was an incredibly sensitive and kind one .... you seem to be a very good soul.

I know I haven't done anything to deserve to have such nice people take the time to comment here on this thread, but I do know how lucky I am that you did.  I also know how much pleasure I get from listening to your music, each one of you. SO much talent floating around here - it's really something special. That may seem facile, but it's true.

    Great song you have here!
I'd like to hear a mix with the guitars turned down, the drums up and the vocals way up.
