In a very basic way things like quality and function is driven by money of course, but the world isn't normally that simple. So I'd say lie.
Regarding Scotch, I don't know. I go to Whisky tasters quite frequently and the blind vote on the last one put the most expensive one (something like $1500 if I remember correctly) second last. And one of my "everyday favourites" (Ancnoc 12yo) is stupid cheap compared to some I don't care for.

Wine, definitely. There are some perfectly acceptable cheap wines, but if you take a £5 supermarket bottle, subtract the taxes, bottling and transport and distribution costs, you're left with about 50p worth of wine.

Back in the day when I was always on the grind/running around I'd buy a couple of $1 hamburgers at the local Slimer King, eat one and keep the other in my pocket for later. I enjoyed randomly pulling out the second hamburger and starting to eat it in the middle of a conversation. When the other person asked where the hell the burger came from I would simply reply... "pocket burger, dood... pocket burger".
