You Give Hope

Here's the first new song for 2012.  I met Joseph, a Christian lyric writer, on a songwriters forum,  and we connected on this song. He sent me the lyric idea he started, I messed with it a bit, added melody and music,  and this was the result.

Hope you enjoy it.

yes! you moved outside the Herb box on this! great tune. the vocals need some work, i think it's more bringing them into the track as the focus. it's mixed as a guitarist. take those electrics back a smidgeon, the bass is a little boomy too, and try and thicken the vox a little. but it's very good! Herb i like this!

I was just going to say Neil Young, darn it.  On  my speakers it sounds just right.  I wouldn't be too quick to change it.  Very good tune.

    Thanks guys....Scotty Lynn and Reece.

This was the first song that I used ARC on. (the right way)

I'm kinda liking it.... and the bass may be a bit hot....I'll be looking at the whole thing over the next few days as more people comment.

Neil Young.... I'm smiling.... he's one of my favorite singer songwriters from way back.

As  kid in high school, we all had to go and talk to the guidance councilor as part of choosing our path towards the future. So I set down in the chair in her office and she asks me what I want to do with my life. I reply, I want to be a singer/songwriter/musician like Neil Young.  When she picks her jaw up off the floor she looks at me with a strange look and says...  "Who?"

Hi Herb - What a truly great song and such a powerful performance. I love it. The only think I would do is to add a harmony to the chorus - perhaps a woman to give that extra oomph (they always do)! If that guidance councilor is still around, no doubt she will now say "oh yes, NOW I know who you mean"!

Malcomb and James.... Thanks for listening guys.

James... yeah... I know what you mean. It's too easy to ID CCM most of the time..... while zipping across radio stations, just 2 seconds of the instrumental parts, you can say Yup... thats a "Christain" station, just by the music.

You look good out of the box, buddy!   This is one of my favorites from you.  I'm on some excellent monitors and everything sounds just right.  As a bass player, it's hard for me to say there's too much, so I won't!  It all sounded great and the theme is great.

Warren and Chas.... thanks...  I was wondering how it would end up....(the mix) because with ARC, it sounded different as I was working on it.  The last few passes on mixing I did turn ARC off and yeah... it was sounding pretty good on this end too. ARC sure puts it in a different perspective.

You guys nailed it. Neil Young all the way.

Very nice job! The bass is a little hot but I love the way it moves and the really nice fills.  The bass drum needs some more oomph.

    Very well done!!!

I love this! +1 to the Neil Young references. As has already been mentioned, it's great to hear a contemporary Christian tune that doesn't sound like one

    One of your best, IMHO.

Hey Joseph? Where you goin w/that hammer in your hand?

    1. The chorus is a bit high for you.

    2. It needs harmony on the chorus.

    3. I agree that it was mixed by a guitarist.

    But it's a nice song :-)

Thanks Scotty, Neil Young is what I was thinking but couldn't put a name to it.

I like the tune Herb and the arrangment.  I seems a little boomy, could be the reverb plus the drums.  Maybe roll the reverb back a take a tad of EQ off below 60hz, although you probably have already done that.  I'm not getting much seperation on the insturments here.

Solid lyrics but may a verse that includes some personal component from the singer would be more engaging.  The song is asking for a lot, but there is no frame of reference.  Hymns do that, but they are meant to sing in a congregation that is just shouting praises.  This has a lot emotion and I think a verse or two that tells me what it is that motivates you, rather than just the praise part.  Althought I think that is what a lot of Christian rock does, and it's the part I don't like.  They tend to all sound alike lyrcially, even though the music is very good, like this.  I think that's why I like country Christian songs better, because there usually is a story involved.  But that's just my thoughts from one lyricist to another.

Nice powerful melody.  I like the lead guitar part, but I would back off the verb on that a bit too.  That's a lot of crits for me, but just offering feedback.

    Keep 'em coming Herb.
